P53 protein expression in odontogenic cysts.

p53 protein seems to be related to the suppression of cell proliferation. p53-positive tissues seem to have a higher proliferative activity than p53-negative ones. Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) has a different behavior from other types of cysts because it is more aggressive, with a tendency to recurrence. Twenty-two dentigerous cysts, 24 radicular cysts, and 20 OKCs were used in the present study. Two dentigerous cysts (9.1%), 2 radicular cysts (8.3%), and 9 OKCs (45%) expressed the p53 protein. The differences between the three groups were statistically significant (p = 0.003). In 10 cases of …

IgG4-positive plasma cells are more often detected in chronic periapical lesions arising from permanent rather than primary teeth.

AIM: To characterize plasma cell subsets in chronic periapical lesions affecting permanent and primary teeth. METHODOLOGY: Only chronic periapical lesions without root canal treatment were selected. Twenty-one radicular cysts and 7 periapical granulomas affecting permanent teeth and 19 radicular cysts and 4 periapical granulomas affecting primary teeth were assessed for immunoglobulin (Ig) light chain (kappa and lambda), Ig heavy chain (IgG, IgG4, IgA, IgM and IgD) and plasma cell immunohistochemical markers (MUM1/IRF4, EMA and CD138). The data acquired were analysed by Student's t test, Mann…

Multidisciplinary Approach in Management of a Large Cystic Lesion in Anterior Maxilla - A Case Report.

Management of large cystic lesion requires a multidisciplinary approach. In this case report a large radicular cyst is managed by conventional root canal treatment with triple antibiotic paste followed by surgical enucleation. In this case, patient presented with a 4 cm symptomatic swelling of the palate adjacent to teeth 21, 22 and 23. The swelling was soft on palpation and the overlying mucosa was of normal color. Radiographically, a well-defined unilocular radiolucency with corticated margins was seen. A full-thickness flap was reflected and revealed a large cyst-like lesion that had perfor…

Scanning electron microscopic observations on the inner surface of jaw cysts.

The cavity surface of 9 jaw cysts was studied in the scanning electron microscope. The material comprised 5 radicular, 2 residual, 1 dentigerous and 1 globulomaxillary cyst. The surface morphology varied from smooth to ruffled within the same cyst, and between cysts. Interepithelial spaces, some of which contained migrating leukocytes, were frequently observed. Bacteria occurred in 1 cyst (dentigerous) only, and included rods, filaments and spirochetes. Crystals of various morphology were seen in 6 of the cysts.

Prevalence of Nonendodontic Diagnoses in Periapical Biopsies: A 6-year Institutional Experience.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to identify nonendodontic periapical lesions (NPLs) mimicking endodontic pathosis, which are most frequently encountered by clinicians. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on biopsies obtained from 2015-2020 at Texas A&M College of Dentistry's oral pathology laboratory. The online database was screened for cases submitted as suspected endodontic pathology using specific key words. Histologic diagnoses were collected to determine the prevalence of NPLs that were originally thought to be of endodontic origin. The frequency and percentage of e

Tunnel Fenestration of the Mandibula after Unsuccessful Post Traumatic Treatment: A Case Report of the One Year Follow-Up.

Particularly severe cases with tunneled defects are rarely reported and are described only in a few case reports. This case report describes the treatment of a tunnel fenestration in the lower central jaw after unsuccessful endodontic treatment following trauma of incisors 31 and 41 over the course of six years, which led to the development of an internal granuloma and a radicular cyst in the lower jaw. The patient presented with a 2.67 cm3 radicular cyst displacing the surrounding tissue at regio 31 and 41, which resulted in a tunnel-like bony defect. Endodontic treatment and periapical root …

Outcome of Percutaneous Lumbar Synovial Cyst Rupture in Patients with Lumbar Radiculopathy.

BACKGROUND: Lumbar synovial cysts can result from spondylosis of facet joints. These cysts can encroach on adjacent nerve roots, causing symptoms of radiculopathy. Currently the only definitive treatment for these symptoms is surgery, which may involve laminectomy or laminotomy, with or without spinal fusion. Surgery has been reported to successfully relieve radicular pain in 83.5% of patients by Zhenbo et al. Little information is available concerning the efficacy and outcome of percutaneous fluoroscopic synovial cyst rupture for treatment of facet joint synovial cysts. OBJECTIVE: The goal o

Dentigerous Cyst associated with Horizontally Impacted Mandibular Second Premolar.

Dentigerous Cyst/developmental cyst of benign odontogenic origin are ones that surround the crown of impacted, embedded, unerupted or developing teeth. Dentigerous cyst is second most common cyst of the oral cavity after radicular cyst. They are usually solitary in occurrence and mostly associated with the mandibular third molars. Dentigerous cysts involving impacted second premolars are rarely reported in the literatures. We present a rare case of dentigerous cyst in a 12-year-old female patient associated with an impacted mandibular second premolar. How to cite this article: Mishra R, Tripat…

Unicystic ameloblastoma of the maxilla: a case report.

Unicystic ameloblastoma is believed to be less aggressive and responds more favorably to conservative surgery than the solid or multicystic ameloblastomas. This report is a rare case of unicystic ameloblastoma of the maxilla that was treated by enucleation under suspicion of a radicular cyst related to a dens in dente. The neoplastic nature of the lesion became evident only when the enucleated material was available for histologic examination. With this report, the authors illustrate the importance and complexity of a differential diagnosis of lesions with a cystic aspect in the anterior regio…
