In rats injected with morphine in the midbrain reticular formation, pronounced ipsilateral rotation behavior was elicited by mild auditory and visual stimuli. The frequency of occurrence and rate of rotation were dose-dependent. This effect was site specific and drug specific; other drugs (except heroin) failed to induce this behavior. Naloxone potentiated the morphine rotation. Studies have been carried out to determine the possible role of nascent histamine in the development of traumatic shock. This was done by examining histidine decarboxylase (HD) activity of the lung, spleen, and plasma following exposure to trauma in normal and trauma-resistant rats. Splenomegaly accompanied by anaemia, increased reticulocyte and decreased thrombocyte counts, was induced in Wistar rats by a long-term intraperitoneal administration of methylcellulose. Rats were exposed to trichloroethylene (TCE) vapour for about five five-day weeks at concentrations from 100 to 1 000 ppm, and at 100 ppm for 12 1/2 weeks. The social behaviour of paired male rats was observed periodically in the home cage for five minutes after they had been exposed to TCE. Rats infected intravenously with Salmonella enteritidis develop a chronic destructive polyarthritis. The joint lesions resemble those of human rheumatoid arthritis in distribution and pathology. On the basis of histological and microbiological studies, involvement does not appear to be the result of intra-articular sepsis. Instead, the data favor the view that transient infection incites an immunological response that localizes in the joint and becomes destructive.

Rats were given a distinctive fluid (milk or grape) during recuperation from an injection of a noxious drug (apomorphine). Single-bottle tests conducted after treatment indicated elevated consumption of the fluid conditionally paired with recuperation. This positive "medicinal" effect is to some degree independent of initial preference, of novelty effects, and of aversive reactions to other substances paired with the onset of illness.
