Subjective meanings of quality of life and related coping mechanisms: insights from a reflective thematic analysis among people living with HIV in Antwerp, Belgium.

Despite advances in HIV treatment, people living with HIV face intersecting health and social challenges shaping their quality of life (QoL). Little is known about how people living with HIV in Belgium conceptualise their quality QoL, cope with stressors, and experience their HIV care. We conducted 18 purposively sampled in-depth interviews, analysing them inductively using reflexive thematic analysis from an interpretative perspective. Participants described good QoL as a balance across physical, mental, and social health, underpinned by socio-economic stability and legal security. Key influe

The relationship between stress and academic burnout in college students: evidence from longitudinal data on indirect effects.

OBJECTIVE: This study primarily examines the mechanisms through which stress affects academic burnout. METHOD: A total of 428 university students from three undergraduate institutions in China-Anhui Normal University, Tourism College of Zhejiang, and Bozhou University-were surveyed using the College Students' Stress Scale, the Academic Burnout Scale, the Social Support Scale, and the Self-Esteem Scale. RESULTS: The results showed that stress significantly positively predicted academic burnout among college students and significantly negatively predicted their perceived social support. Both s

COVID-19 vaccination of at-risk and marginalised groups: recentering the state in vaccine uptake.

Recent studies have used the World Health Organization's new Behavioural and Social Drivers (BeSD) framework to analyse vaccine uptake. However, this study of COVID-19 vaccination among marginalised population groups highlights the framework's limitations regarding the centrality of the state in shaping people's vaccination intentions in high income countries. We conducted interviews and focus groups with service providers and community members to explore COVID-19 vaccination amongst Western Australians experiencing homelessness and/or from other marginalised populations (such as people with s

Behavioral and neuroimmune characterization of resilience to social stress: Rewarding effects of cocaine.

Preclinical studies have shown that social stress increases vulnerability to the reinforcing effects of cocaine. However, the results are not always homogeneous, revealing a subpopulation that does not show a preference for cocaine. Thus, the main aim of the present study was to characterize the behavioral profile of resilient mice to the stress-induced rewarding effects of cocaine using an animal model of repeated social defeat stress (SD). To this end, male adult mice of the C57/BL6 strain were exposed to SD and, three weeks later, assessed using the Conditioned Place Preference paradigm ind

When rejection backfires: Social exclusion and economic decision-making in gamblers.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Economic decision-making deviates from rational choice models and is influenced by social factors, particularly fairness considerations and belonging needs. Social exclusion and altruistic punishment are intended to promote behavioral conformity, yet paradoxically may exacerbate rather than correct targeted behaviors among individuals with addictions already experiencing chronic rejection. Several preliminary studies show that social exclusion increases money desirability in general populations, however, the interaction between acute social exclusion and economic decision-

Oral health can be a driver of the UK health transformation agenda.

Oral health is a critical yet underutilised lever for health system transformation in the UK. Despite being among the most prevalent noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), oral conditions remain dominated by costly, intervention-based care models. The World Health Organization's Global Oral Health Action Plan (2023-2030) and recent UK health reform agendas present an opportunity to embed oral health within primary care and universal health coverage frameworks. This paper argues for a paradigm shift toward prevention, integration, and equity, addressing shared risk factors across NCDs through team-ba

Survivor Perceptions of Supporters' Social Reactions in the Initial Months Following Sexual Assault: A Daily Diary Study.

Sexual assault survivors receive a variety of positive and negative social reactions when they seek support from friends, family, or others close to them (i.e., informal supporters). However, past research demonstrates that survivors' perceptions of these social reactions are more varied than suggested by their traditional categorization as "positive" or "negative." Although survivors experiencing elevated posttraumatic stress (PTS) and alcohol use may be at especially high risk of receiving "negative" reactions and experiencing poorer recovery outcomes, it is unclear to what degree these surv

Complex decision-making of people's use of opioid agonist therapy during pregnancy: Troubling the concept of 'non-compliance'.

Clinical guidelines strongly recommend that pregnant people with opioid use disorder be offered Opioid Agonist Therapy (OAT); however, access to and retention in substance use services are influenced by a multitude of factors. We conducted 25 semi-structured qualitative interviews with pregnant and recently pregnant people who used opioids or OAT before their pregnancy. Participants were recruited from various health and social services, through social media and by word of mouth. For analysis, we used a voice-centred relational method; each transcript was read four times looking for different

Sexual Disgust Trumps Pathogen Disgust in Predicting Voter Behavior During the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election.

Why is disgust sensitivity associated with socially conservative political views? Is it because socially conservative ideologies mitigate the risks of infectious disease, whether by promoting out-group avoidance or by reinforcing norms that sustain antipathogenic practices? Or might it be because socially conservative ideologies promote moral standards that advance a long-term, as opposed to a short-term, sexual strategy? Recent attempts to test these two explanations have yielded differing results and conflicting interpretations. Here, we contribute to the literature by examining the relation

Mass psychogenic illness: psychological predisposition and iatrogenic pseudo-vocal cord dysfunction and pseudo-reactive airways disease syndrome.

A multidisciplinary team assessed five patients who alleged chronic medically unexplained multiorgan system symptoms described by idiopathic environmental intolerance allegedly triggered by exposure to solvents used in membrane roofing repair work on an office building. The event precipitated an incident of mass psychogenic illness (MPI). Treating physicians diagnosed irritant-associated vocal cord dysfunction (IVCD) and reactive airways disease syndrome (RADS) resulting from exposure. The authors conducted medical, psychological, and industrial hygiene evaluations. Air monitoring data for tot

Face processing in different brain areas, and critical band masking.

Neurophysiological evidence is described showing that some neurons in the macaque inferior temporal visual cortex have responses that are invariant with respect to the position, size, view, and spatial frequency of faces and objects, and that these neurons show rapid processing and rapid learning. Critical band spatial frequency masking is shown to be a property of these face-selective neurons and of the human visual perception of faces. Which face or object is present is encoded using a distributed representation in which each neuron conveys independent information in its firing rate, with li

[Computer games and Internet addiction as well as pathological gambling. Therapy approaches].

In accordance with the development of substance-related disorders, behavioral addictions, such as internet use disorder and pathological gambling are regarded as repetitive excessive behavior which increasingly turns into an automatic action which is difficult to control intentionally. This automatic behavior is reinforced by learning processes, associated with neuroadaption, especially in the dopaminergic reward system. Treatment aims at finding alternatives for gambling or online activities and reducing times online so that social contacts need to be re-established. The following article pro

Food and nutrition literacy and diet self-efficacy among patients with liver cancer: latent profile analysis, associated factors, and an exploratory examination of gender differences.

Patients with liver cancer frequently experience a heightened risk of malnutrition and a substantial symptom burden attributable to antitumor treatment. Food and nutrition literacy and diet self-efficacy represent critical psychobehavioral competencies that underpin dietary decision-making and the sustained adoption of healthy eating practices in this population. Nevertheless, few studies have delineated the latent profile typologies of these two constructs or their associated factors, and preliminary gender-stratified explorations remain conspicuously absent. To address these gaps, the presen

Analysis of the effects of task preferences, task demands, and adult attention on child behavior in outpatient and classroom settings.

Two studies were conducted with children who displayed behavior problems to evaluate the effects of task preference, task demands, and adult attention on child behavior. In Study 1, we conducted brief functional analyses in an outpatient clinic to identify variables that facilitated appropriate behavior. For 8 of 10 children, distinct patterns of performance occurred; 3 children displayed improved behavior with changes in task demands, 1 child displayed improved behavior with a preferred task, and 4 children displayed improved behavior with changes in adult attention. In most cases, the childr

Both/And: Mixed methods analysis of network composition, communication patterns, and socio-economic support within social networks of transgender women involved in sex work in Lima, Peru.

INTRODUCTION: Social networks contribute to normative reinforcement of HIV prevention strategies, knowledge sharing, and social capital, but little research has characterized the social networks of transgender women (TW) in Latin America. We conducted a mixed methods analysis of three network clusters of TW in Lima, Peru, to evaluate network composition, types of support exchanged, and patterns of communication. METHODS: We recruited TW residing in or affiliated with three "casas trans" (houses shared among TW) in Lima between April-May 2018. Eligible participants were 18 or older, self-repor

The Importance of Nidotherapy and Environmental Change in the Management of People with Complex Mental Disorders.

Much has been done in the last 50 years to achieve a better understanding of the psychosocial causes and other factors influencing the manifestation of mental illness, but there has been a conspicuous omission. Although gross environmental deficiencies were exposed in old mental institutions, 70 years ago the more subtle maladaptive settings that reinforce chronicity in mental illness have often been forgotten. In this review, the potential of systematic environmental manipulation as a treatment (nidotherapy) and other similar forms of management, used many times in the past but now mainly in

Nicotine Dependence, Perceived Behavioral Control, Descriptive Quitting Norms, and Intentions to Quit Smoking among Chinese Male Regular Smokers.

The association between nicotine dependence and intentions to quit smoking is well established. However, the underlying mechanisms and psychosocial factors that moderate this relationship have not been adequately delineated. Reinforcement theory, social learning theory, the theory of planned behavior, and the focus theory of normative conduct suggest that perceived behavioral control (PBC) over smoking cessation is a central mechanism that underlies the relationship between nicotine dependence and quitting intentions. Purpose/Objectives: The present study tested a moderated mediation model to

Reconsidering the roots, structure, and implications of gambling motives: An integrative approach.

RATIONALE AND METHOD: Accurately identifying motives to gamble is crucial in the functional analysis of gambling behavior. In this study, a data-driven approach was followed to clarify the factor structure underlying a pool of motives for gambling, selected from the Gambling Motives Questionnaire-Financial (GMQ-F), and the Reasons for Gambling Questionnaire (RGQ), in a sample of regular problem and non-problem gamblers. Additionally, the role of gambling motives in the relationship between root behavioral activation/inhibition systems (BIS/BAS) and gambling severity, frequency, and preferences

A longitudinal network analysis of social connection and professional quality of life among healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Society depends on people willing to serve in high stress occupations, such as healthcare workers who served on the front lines during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, these roles can take a toll on psychological health, fueling turnover and staff shortages. This toll can be mitigated with social connection. Yet, little is known about how the multifaceted constructs of psychological health and social connection influence one another over time. Understanding these dynamics is critical for identifying effective intervention targets in high-stress professions. METHODS: We conducted a
