Restless legs syndrome in post-polio syndrome: a series of 10 patients with demographic, clinical and laboratorial findings.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have described the occurrence of restless legs syndrome in post-polio syndrome. METHODS: We studied 10 consecutive patients with post-polio syndrome and symptoms of restless legs syndrome. We look at demographic, clinical and laboratorial data. RESULTS: A remarkable finding was the concomitant onset of symptoms of both diseases, suggesting a possible underlying mechanism. Severity of restless legs symptoms was moderate to very severe. CONCLUSION: Epidemiological studies with larger samples are needed to better establish the relationship and the incidence of restless …

Different periodicity and time structure of leg movements during sleep in narcolepsy/cataplexy and restless legs syndrome.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To analyze periodic leg movements (PLM) during sleep in patients with narcolepsy and compare the results with those obtained in normal controls and subjects with restless legs syndrome (RLS). METHODS: We recruited 40 HLA DQB1*0602-positive patients with narcolepsy/cataplexy, 22 with RLS, and 22 controls. The time structure of their polysomnographically recorded LMs was analyzed by means of an approach particularly able to consider their periodicity. MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS: Nineteen patients with narcolepsy had a PLM index greater than 15. The distribution of inter-LM inte…

[Restless legs syndrome and periodic leg movements during sleep in patients with sleep apnea--a therapeutic problem?].

Restless-legs syndrome and periodic movements during sleep are associated with sleep apnoea syndrome. Similar to sleep apnoea syndrome, restless-legs syndrome and periodic movements during sleep may cause severe hyposomnia and hypersomnia. Exact diagnosis may partly fail in severe obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome if only cardiorespiratory polygraphy is performed. Simultaneous videorecordings and EMG of mm. tibialis ant. ensure diagnosis. Therapeutic regime may be difficult due to failure or side effects, however. We report on our experience in an one-year follow-up of 12 patients with sleep a

Circadian Rhythm in Restless Legs Syndrome and Its Association With Symptom Severity: An Actigraphy-Based Study.

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is characterized by an urge to move that occurs in the evening or night time, suggesting circadian involvement. However, objective evidence regarding the circadian phase in RLS remains limited, particularly in real-world settings. We conducted an exploratory pilot study to investigate circadian rhythm timing in patients with RLS using actigraphy-based dim light melatonin onset (DLMO) estimation and to explore its potential association with symptom severity. Patients with idiopathic RLS (n = 21) and age- and sex-matched chronic insomnia controls (n = 21) underwent 1…

Investigating the inflammation marker neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio in Danish blood donors with restless legs syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a neurological sensorimotor disorder that occurs in the evening and night, thereby impacting quality of sleep in sufferers. The pathophysiology of RLS is poorly understood but inflammation has been proposed as possibly being involved. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) can be used as an inflammation marker but results from small studies have been inconclusive in determining whether NLR is associated with RLS. We aimed to assess whether an association between NLR and RLS exists in a large cohort of healthy individuals. METHODS: Neutrophils and …

Transcutaneous Spinal Cord Direct-Current Stimulation Modulates Functional Activity and Integration in Idiopathic Restless Legs Syndrome.

Idiopathic restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a sensorimotor disorder and is suggested to be caused by central nervous system abnormalities. Non-invasive transcutaneous spinal direct-current stimulation (tsDCS) was recently used for RLS therapy. However, the neurophysiological basis of tsDCS treatment is still unknown. In this study, we explored the neural basis of tsDCS in 15 RLS patients and 20 gender- and age-matched healthy controls using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. We calculated the whole-brain voxel-wise fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF), re…

Association between Restless Legs Syndrome Symptoms and Self-Reported Hypertension: a Nationwide Questionnaire Study in Korea.

BACKGROUND: The association between restless legs syndrome (RLS) and hypertension remains controversial. We investigated the relationship between RLS and hypertension in a nationwide sample of the Korean adult population. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional questionnaire-based study including 2,740 adults aged 19 years or more. Subjects who met the four essential International RLS Study Group criteria and reported symptoms occurring at least once a week were defined as the RLS group. The presence of hypertension was defined as a self-reported history of physician-diagnosed hypertension. We co…

The Association Between Vitamin D Level and Restless Legs Syndrome: A Population-Based Case-Control Study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The pathophysiology of restless legs syndrome (RLS) may be related to abnormalities in central dopamine pathways. Vitamin D may play a role in the pathophysiology of RLS by modulating the dopaminergic system. The aim of our study is to examine the possible link between RLS and vitamin D deficiency. METHODS: The total number of subjects enrolled was 201, including 78 patients with RLS based on the International RLS Study Group (IRLSSG) diagnostic criteria and 123 controls. Serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels were measured in both groups. RLS severity was assessed in all cases u…

Auditory and Lower Limb Tactile Prepulse Inhibition in Primary Restless Legs Syndrome: Clues to Its Pathophysiology.

The resting sensory discomfort transiently relieved upon movement of the affected area in restless legs syndrome suggests that sensorimotor integration mechanisms, specifically gating, may be altered in the disease. The authors sought to determine the effects of prepulse auditory and tactile stimulation applied to lower limbs on the blink reflex of patients with restless legs syndrome and healthy subjects. Seventeen patients with restless legs syndrome and 17 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were investigated. Auditory stimuli and tactile lower limb stimulation were applied as prepulses. …

The association between restless legs syndrome, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases: hypotheses and evidence from the literature.

The association between RLS and both CVRFs, such as hypertension and diabetes, and CVDs still remains elusive. Although several shared physiopathological causes could explain these possible relationships, the emerging body of literature focusing on these disorders remains controversial. The reasons for these inconsistent findings are mainly due to the different methodologies applied. First, considering that RLS, CVRFs and CVDs are influenced by age and sex, many clinical and population-based studies performed a selection bias by restricting the sample collection to these covariates. Second, as
