Evolution of osteoarticular disorders as a function of past heavy physical work factors: longitudinal analysis of 627 retired subjects living in the Paris area.

The relations between osteoarticular disorders and occupational exposure to heavy physical work factors were studied in a random sample of retired subjects living in the Paris area, all of whom had contributed to the same retirement pension fund. 627 subjects were originally seen in 1982-3 and 464 of them were seen again five years later. On both occasions, the same questionnaire was completed during a home interview. Osteoarticular disorders were evaluated by the presence of pain, with or without restricted joint movement, for at least six months before interview. The heavy physical work fact…

Risk-stratified lifetime risk and incidence of hip fracture and falls in middle-aged and elderly Chinese population: The China health and retirement longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Hip fracture (HF) is one of the most prevalent orthopedic conditions among the elderly, with falls being the primary risk factor for HF. With the surge of aged population, China is facing great challenges from HF and falls. However, a comprehensive long-term observation of risk factors affecting HF and falls and their association are little reported at a national level. METHODS: The longitudinal cohort was established using the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) data from 2011 to 2018. The incidence density and multi-risk-stratified lifetime risk (up to 90 yea…

Vision and Hearing Difficulties and Life Expectancy Without ADL/IADL Limitations: Evidence From the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing and the Health and Retirement Study.

BACKGROUND: Hearing and vision difficulties are some of the most common deficits experienced by older adults. Having either visual or hearing difficulties increases the risk of comorbidity, disability, and poor quality of life. So far, however, few studies have examined the association between vision and hearing difficulties on life expectancy without activities of daily living (ADL) or instrumental ADL (IADL) limitations (LEWL). METHODS: Data came from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing and the Health and Retirement Study in the United States from 2002 to 2013. The outcome was defined …

Protein density, carbohydrate quality, and frailty-state transitions among adults aged 50 years or older: a continuous-time multistate analysis of the health and retirement study.

BACKGROUND: Frailty is a dynamic condition in which individuals may deteriorate, recover, remain stable, or die. Although healthier dietary patterns have been associated with a lower risk of frailty, less is known about their associations with specific frailty-state transitions. We examined whether a study-specific score emphasizing protein density and carbohydrate quality was associated with transitions between frailty states. METHODS: We linked the 2013 Health and Retirement Study nutrition assessment to repeated frailty assessments from 2014 to 2021 among participants aged 50 years or olde…

Life-course stressful life events and risk of stroke in middle-aged and older Chinese adults: Evidence from the China health and retirement longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Stressful life events (SLEs) across the life course have been recognized as important psychosocial stressors that may adversely influence cardiometabolic and cerebrovascular health. However, the cumulative and stage-specific impact of SLEs on stroke risk, and the potential mediating role of intrinsic capacity, remain insufficiently understood in aging populations. METHODS: We analyzed data from 7,605 participants aged ≥45 years in the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Childhood and adulthood SLEs were retrospectively assessed using the 2011 baseline survey a…

Age-Related Differences in T-Cell Subsets in a Nationally Representative Sample of People Older Than Age 55: Findings From the Health and Retirement Study.

Though T-cell immunosenescence is a major risk factor for age-related diseases, susceptibility to infections, and responses to vaccines, differences in T-cell subset counts and representation by age and sex have not been determined for a large sample representative of the national population of the United States. We evaluated the counts of T-cell subsets including total, CD4+, and CD8+ T cells and their naïve (Tn), effector memory (Tem), and effector subsets, in the context of age, sex, and exposure to cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection among 8 848 Health and Retirement Study participants, a nati…
