Isolated cerebral mucormycosis is a rare fungal infection for which morbidity and mortality remain high despite prompt tissue diagnosis and antifungal treatment. Intravenous drug use is strongly associated with this condition. However, other risk factors classically associated with systemic mucormycosis, such as poorly controlled diabetes and an immunocompromised state, are seldom seen in cases of isolated cerebral involvement. Here, we present a rare case of isolated mucormycosis of the basal ganglia by Rhizopus in a patient with multiple risk factors. Diagnosis and treatment guidelines for i…

Mucormycosis is a fungal infection caused by order Mucorales in humans. It commonly affects immunocompromised individuals, usually following … ma. Repeated biopsies suggested there were only inflammatory changes but a fungal culture confirmed Rhizopus microsporus. The ulcer was managed successfully with high doses of intravenous Amphotericin B and aggressive surgical debridement.

Keratomycosis and infection of the anterior chamber with a Rhizopus sp (phycomycosis, mucormycosis) developed in a 24-year-old man following a perforating injury of the cornea with a soil-contaminated screwdriver. The infection was documented by positive cultures of the corneal wound and of the anterior chamber and by histopathologic studies. Phycomycosis of the eye usually occurs in the setting of systemically impaired host resistance. The patient had no underlying disease that wound predispose him to this infection but the treatment with topical 0.1% dexamethasone and triamcinolone acetonide…

Background Mucormycosis is a consequence of the angioinvasive disease caused by filamentous fungi that belong to the order Mucorales, particularly Mucor, Rhizopus, and Rhizomucor. Rhizopus oryzae is the most prevalent form. The invading hyphae lead to damage of blood vessels leading to thrombosis and consequent tissue necrosis. The incidence of this disease entity witnessed a significant rise during the second wave of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Timely diagnosis and prompt treatment are crucial to diminish both the mortality and morbidity associated with this disease. Ima…

Mucormycosis is caused by fungi belonging to the order Mucorales. The term "Black Fungus" has been widely applied to human pathogenic Mucora … hough the mortality rate is estimated to be 50%, it could be above 90% if left untreated. In India, Rhizopus arrhizus has been related to be the most common species to cause human mucormycosis, followed by Apophysomyces variabilis, Rhizopus microsporus, and R. homothallicus. Accurate sample identification of human pathogenic Mucorales species is challengin …

Pulmonary mucormycosis (PM) is a life-threatening fungal infection in patients with hematologic malignancies, and early and accurate diagnostic modalities are urgently needed. We conducted a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay targeting these fungi in peripheral blood from four patients with hematologic malignancies who were strongly suspected of having PM. In these four patients, the Rhizopus species was identified in two patients, and the Cunninghamella and Absidia species in one each. Based on these molecular findings, all of the patients were successfully treated via targeted therapy wit…

Zygomycosis is characterized by tissue invasion with broad, non-septate hyphae of species such as Rhizopus, Rhizomucor, Lichtheimia (Absidia) and Basidiobolus. Basidiobolus ranarum usually causes subcutaneous infection, and gastrointestinal manifestations in immunocompetent patients have rarely been reported. It is difficult to diagnose gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis because of the non-specific clinical presentation and the absence of a definite risk factor. This study identified 14 cases of gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis, all of which were diagnosed after surgery by characteristic h…

Mucormycosis is a rare opportunistic infection but a fulminant disease. Varying clinical forms have been described, including cutaneous localisations which are mainly observed in diabetic and burned patients. The cutaneous lesions induced by the mucormycosis affection are often atypical and gangrenous. We report a case of cutaneous mucormycosis in a Tunisian patient with diabetic ketoacidosis. He developed cutaneous necrotic lesions at the low limb. The diagnosis of mucormycosis was not initially evoked but tardily confirmed by identifying mucorale hyphae in tissue sections and Rhizopus oryzae…

Over recent years the clinical importance of mucormycosis has significantly increased. Most frequently mucormycosis occurs in neutropenic patients with haematological diseases. It is caused by fungi of the order Mucorales. The clinical patterns of the disease produced by different genera or species of Mucorales are virtually identical. Rhizopus, Absidia, Rhizomucor and Mucor are the organisms most commonly isolated from patients who suffer from mucormycosis. Diagnosis of mucormycosis is difficult as it is based on culture methods or microscopy of clinical specimens. The diagnosis is often only…

BACKGROUND: We sought to determine if next-generation sequencing (NGS) of microbial cell-free DNA (cfDNA) in plasma would detect pathogens i … ergillus fumigatus by lung biopsy, Candida albicans by blood or pancreatic pseudocyst cultures, and Rhizopus delemar by skin biopsy. Rhizopus oryzae identified on skin biopsy and A. fumigatus isolated on day 27 of 28 of culture from lung biopsy were not detected by cfDNA NGS, possibly due to lack of bloodstream penetration and questionable pathogenicity, r …

A 9-year-old boy diagnosed with acute myeloblastic leukemia and undergoing chemotherapy, was admitted with febrile neutropenia. During his admission, several violaceous plaques appeared on the upper extremities and anterior left hemithorax, which worsened and acquired a necrotic center. We performed a biopsy and histology showed a cutaneous infarction at the dermoepidermal and subcutaneous level. We observed abundant wide hyphae with right-angled branching and a culture isolated Rhizopus oryzae. A plastic surgery consultant performed a surgical debridement of the lesions and treatment was star…

Rapid assessment of fungal growth and screening antifungal compounds, such as nanoparticles (NPs), for effectiveness is a challenging procedure because no primary standards exist as they do for yeasts and bacteria. Because fungi do not grow as single cells, but as hyphal filaments, they cannot be quantified by the usual enumeration techniques used in bacteriology. The growth of three postharvest fungal isolates ( Alternaria alternata, Rhizopus stolonifer, and Botrytis cinerea) was investigated at different inoculum concentrations and in three nutrient media (Sabouraud dextrose agar, potato dex…

RATIONALE: Mucormycosis is a rare fungal infection but life-threatening, especially in lupus nephritis (LN). Mucormycosis may manifest as rhino-orbital-cerebral, pulmonary, cutaneous, gastrointestinal, renal, or disseminated forms.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We report a case of a 52-year-old woman with cutaneous mucormycosis infection who was admitted because of LN.
DIAGNOSES: Histopathological analysis of the lesion confirmed the Rhizopus microspores from the family Mucoraceae.
INTERVENTIONS AND OUTCOMES: The mortality of mucormycosis remains unacceptably high. Our patient died at last even with st…

We report the clinical case of a 36 years old female without significant previous history who was diagnosed with an acute maxillary sinusitis with not responding to antibiotic treatment. After her admission we asked for a CT which showed an occupation in the left maxillary sinus with a calcified area inside suggesting a mycetoma. The patient was operated by Functional Endoscopy Sinusal Surgery (FESS) plus Caldwell-Luc techniques sending the obtained sample for microbiological study, that was reported as sinusal mycosis by Zygomicetos. The postsurgical evolution was satisfactory.

The defect in host defense that makes the diabetic ketoacidotic (DKA) patient susceptible to mucormycosis has not been identified. Sera from 10 DKA patients and three normal volunteers were tested for their capacity to support the in vitro growth of a common etiologic agent of mucormycosis, Rhizopus oryzae. After equilibration with room air none of the normal or DKA sera, each of which was now extremely alkaline, supported growth of R. oryzae. When the sera were placed in a CO2 atmosphere that permitted simulation of the in vivo clinical pH (normal 7.40 and DKA 7.3-6.6), four of seven DKA sera…

The effects of the absence of adrenal tissues on the inflammatory reaction and on the relationship of the tissue mast cells to the inflammatory process have been studied histologically in rats with cutaneous Rhizopus oryzae infection. Degranulation and regranulation of the tissue mast cells at the site of injury have been found to correlate respectively with the onset and subsidence of the exudative cellular phase of inflammation. In the adrenalectomized animals regranulation of these cells and correspondingly termination of the exudative phase are delayed. In the lesions of these rats the num…
