A case of aneurysmal bone cyst of the left 5th rib is reported. A 57-year-old male complained of palpable lump and pain on his back. Chest X ray and CT showed expansive tumor arid pathological fracture of the left 5th rib. The tumor and the adjacent segments of the 4th and 5th ribs were resected en bloc. The pathological examination showed multiple blood filled spaces and fibrous trabeculae, confirming the diagnosis of aneurysmal bone cyst. He has been followed up for 3 years and 6 months with no signs of recurrence.

The short rib (polydactyly) syndrome Beemer type is a rare lethal osteochondrodysplasia characterized clinically by short limbs, median cleft upper lip and palate, narrow thorax, and protuberant abdomen, and radiologically by short ribs, short and bowed long bones, and mild platyspondyly. Two affected female sibs are described, one having a preaxial polydactyly of the feet. The differentiation with the short rib syndrome Majewski type relies mainly on the radiological appearance of the tibia. Molecular biology may eventually prove whether the 2 conditions are truly separate entities or not.

Nasal structural reconstruction is a formidable task in cases where there is loss of support to both the nasal dorsum and tip. A multitude of surgical approaches and materials have been used for the correction of the saddle-nose deformity with varying degrees of success. Articulated irradiated rib cartilage inserted through an external rhinoplasty approach was used to reconstruct nasal deformities in 18 patients over a 6-year period. In a previous investigation of lung function in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), we observed that some patients had significant dysfunction of their chest wall mechanics without pleural disease that could contribute to their respiratory symptoms. To investigate further the chest wall functions of patients with RA, we selected 10 female lifetime nonsmoking patients with RA and compared them to 10 paid normal volunteers in detailed functional evaluations of lung and chest wall. Sixteen dogs were placed under general anesthesia and flail segments of the left chest were created by transecting ribs 7,8,9, and 10 anteriorly and posteriorly. The development of reparative processes after resection of the vertebrum bodies and anterior spondylodesis by a not-free rib transplant was studied in experiment and in 95 patients. Only in 1 of them the supporting capacity of the vertebral column was not restored. A term infant had dwarfism with characteristic skeletal and extraskeletal changes of the short rib-polydactyly syndrome type 2 (Majewski). The skeletal changes included extremely short horizontal ribs, extreme micromelia with disproportionately short ovoid tibiae, and pre- and post-axial polydactyly. First rib fractures occurred in 55 patients. This injury is a harbinger of major trauma with 35 patients suffering a major chest injury, and abdominal and cardiac injuries occurring in 18 and eight patients respectively. The mortality associated with this injury was high (36.3%).
