Hemorrhage is a potent stimulus for the release of vasopressin (VP), renin, and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). The goal of this study was to analyze changes in plasma VP, renin, and ACTH levels during hemorrhagic shock and resuscitation with two different solutions: hypertonic acetate dextran (HAD) and lactated Ringer's (LR) solution. We experienced a surgical case of Stanford type A acute aortic dissection with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) associated with ectopic kidney. The effect of blood transfusions and anesthesia on host response to endotoxin was evaluated in multiple Lewis rat models. At 26 weeks' gestation, the patient gave birth to 2 premature infants who did not survive. Following this delivery, under general anaesthesia and infusions of tocolytic drugs and antibiotics the uterus was washed with Ringer's lactate solution and cerclage of the cervix was performed after ligation and section of the two umbilical cord flush with the cervix. Hematoma is one of many complications that can follow surgery for Dupuytren's contracture. In this article, along with a discussion of previously used methods, a technique developed to prevent postoperative palmar hematoma is reviewed. The technique consists of inserting a polyethylene tube into the surgical wound prior to closure and then irrigating the wound with cold Ringer's solution at the rate of approximately 75 cc/hr for 24-36 hours postoperatively. This report critically evaluates the fluid requirements of 30 infants with gastroschisis. Fluid requirements were unrelated to gestational age, birth weight, or type of repair. Twenty-five percent of the fluid was colloid needed to restore intravascular volume and oncotic pressure, the balance consisting of Ringer's lactate solution. These data support the conclusion that the fluid requirements of the newborn with gastroschisis are significantly increased over those of the normal neonate. Animal studies with hypertonic solutions suggest that they can achieve resuscitation of hypovolemic shock with extremely small volumes. Such small volume resuscitation might be ideal in the field treatment of injured patients. Our studies to date, with 60 patients entered into a prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled, and double-blind clinical trial, suggest that the use of a 7.5% NaCl/Dextran 70 solution increases blood pressures during transport. Using teratogen--trans-retinoic acid (Sigma Chemical)--caudal malformations are experimentally induced in mice of the Spriche-Dolly breed. For the purpose the aforementioned reagent is injected into pregnant mice at 6-hour intervals dose 29 mg/kg. In stages between two and four paired somites, supravital staining with Nile blue sulfite (in 1:50,000 Ringer solution at 37 degrees C for 30 min) is done, followed by histological assessment of tissue sections. The malformation noted are summed up in an attempt to draw conclusions about their presumable pathogenesis.

INTRODUCTION: Neuroimaging reveals increased glutamate within the insula of patients with fibromyalgia (FM), suggesting a link between FM symptoms and increased central excitatory neurotransmission. Many patients with FM also present with decreased intraepidermal nerve fiber density (IENFD), consistent with small fiber pathology. It remains unknown, however, whether either of these mechanistic findings represent a cause or a consequence of the other.
