Season-long increases in perceived muscle soreness in professional rugby league players: role of player position, match characteristics and playing surface.

Rugby League (RL) is a high-impact collision sport characterised by repeated sprints and numerous high-speed impacts and consequently players often report immediate and prolonged muscle soreness in the days after a match. We examined muscle soreness after matches during a full season to understand the extent to which match characteristics influence soreness. Thirty-one elite Super League players provided daily measures of muscle soreness after each of the 26 competitive fixtures of the 2012 season. Playing position, phase of the season, playing surface and match characteristics were recorded f…

Relationship between radiographic abnormalities of lumbar spine and incidence of low back pain in high school rugby players: a prospective study.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between prevalent radiographic abnormalities of the lumbar spine and the incidence of low back pain in high school rugby players. Three hundred and twenty-seven incoming high school rugby players (15-16 years of age) were recruited between 1986 and 1994. All of them underwent athletic physical examination before participation in high school athletics. The relationship between prevalent radiographic abnormalities of the lumbar spine in the pre-participation athletic physical examination and the incidence of low back pain during a 1-year …

H2O2 and NO2- in Exhaled Breath Condensate Increase After a Wheelchair Rugby Match in Paralympic Athletes: A Possible Effect of Functional Classification.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is associated with respiratory dysfunction, chronic inflammation, and oxidative stress, and can increase pulmonary tissue stress during exercise. Thus, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and nitrite (NO2-) concentrations in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) were compared during an official wheelchair rugby match. 14 males and two females with SCI (33.3 ± 6.5 years), anthropometry, baseline spirometry, and the International Wheelchair Rugby Federation classification (IWRF) were recorded. Playing time (23.6 ± 7.49 min), Borg scale (4.3 ± 1.64), and [H2O2] EBC and [NO2-] EBC were det…

Evaluation of a prospective interdisciplinary assessment of return to play in male professional rugby union following lower-limb injury: A pilot study.

The return-to-play process is multifactorial, requiring input from multiple disciplines for rehabilitation. This pilot study used a prospective interdisciplinary approach to assess male professional Rugby Union players' (n = 7) rehabilitation following a non-contact lower-limb injury. Kinetic and self-efficacy assessments were conducted across three rehabilitation phases (acute, middle, late). Biomechanical changes (p < 0.05) were observed across all phases; alongside self-efficacy increases. Moderate-to-strong positive relationships (r = 0.77-0.80) were found between kinetic and self-ef…

Padded Headgear does not Reduce the Incidence of Match Concussions in Professional Men's Rugby Union: A Case-control Study of 417 Cases.

Concussion is the most common match injury in rugby union. Some players wear padded headgear, but whether this protects against concussion is unclear. In professional male rugby union players, we examined: (i) the association between the use of headgear and match concussion injury incidence, and (ii) whether wearing headgear influenced time to return to play following concussion. Using a nested case-control within a cohort study, four seasons (2013-2017) of injury data from 1117 players at the highest level of rugby union in England were included. Cases were physician-diagnosed concussion inju…

Game changer? A sporting indication to implant a left atrial appendage closure device in a rugby player with atrial fibrillation: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Caring for athletes with cardiac disease requires an approach that caters to the specific needs of the athlete. CASE SUMMARY: A 27-year-old professional rugby player was admitted with decompensated heart failure and atrial fibrillation (AF). Transthoracic echocardiogram showed features in keeping with a dilated cardiomyopathy with severe left ventricular (LV) systolic impairment. He made good progress on evidence-based heart failure medication and his LV systolic function returned to normal. He failed to maintain sinus rhythm with cardioversion and remained in persistent AF. He th…

Baseline Symptom Collection in Elite Rugby Union Players-Limited Clinical Utility? An Investigation of Assessments Across 5879 men and Women Athletes.

In World Rugby's Head Injury Assessment (HIA) protocol, a modified Sports Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT) is completed during the pre-season (baseline) and when a player has a suspected head injury. The symptom component of the SCAT, which involves comparing current to baseline symptoms, has been shown to be the most predictive component for concussion diagnosis. Because the clinical comparison of symptom report to baseline is a key determinant of concussion diagnosis, this study aims to explore the relationship between symptoms endorsement at baseline and during HIA. Mean and standard devia…

Waveform-level agreement between global positioning system and sacral inertial measurement unit acceleration during overground running in male elite rugby athletes.

Thoracic-mounted global positioning system (GPS) units embed accelerometers to characterise locomotor mechanics in applied sport. However, it's unclear whether acceleration waveforms captured by these devices preserve the signal structure of sacral-mounted inertial measurement units (IMUs), which are used as biomechanical references for gait characteristics. This study evaluated waveform-level similarity and between-session reliability of resultant acceleration from thoracic GPS and sacral IMUs during running. Ten elite rugby union athletes completed two 4-min steady-state running sessions at …
