Modeling the associations between emotion regulation, suicide crisis syndrome and suicidal behavior: Results in community and clinical samples.

BACKGROUND: Emotion Regulation (ER) and Suicide Crisis Syndrome (SCS) are psychological processes involved in suicide. Within ER, both the use of rumination and dysfunctional emotion beliefs are associated with suicide. SCS, a pre-suicidal mental state involving cognitive and affective dysregulation, is related to short-term suicide risk. AIMS: Here, we first examined associations between ER (beliefs about the uncontrollability of emotions and rumination), SCS and suicide behavior, and second, we test a multistep model in which ER factors are linked to suicide behavior through SCS. Does repetitive negative thinking affect attention? Differential effects of worry and rumination on attention to emotional stimuli.

Worry and rumination, two cardinal responses to emotional events, are key for maintaining negative emotion and have been implicated in the etiology and maintenance of anxiety and depressive disorders. Though worry and rumination are highly correlated with one another and people who engage in one often engage in both, they may differentially affect emotion. Specifically, previous work suggests that worry helps people avoid (intense) emotion, while rumination provokes it. Examining the ways in which these two forms of repetitive negative thinking (RNT) influence cognitive processing of emotional

Switching and backward inhibition in major depressive disorder: the role of rumination.

Previous studies have demonstrated that individuals with major depressive disorder have difficulties switching attention from one task set to another. In the current study we examined whether ruminative thinking drives the switching deficits of depressed individuals. A secondary, more exploratory, goal of this study was to examine whether state rumination would impair depressed individuals' ability to activate a new task set, to inhibit a no longer relevant task set, or both. Participants underwent either a rumination induction or a distraction induction and then completed a backward inhibitio

[The role of cognitive emotion regulation in disordered eating among chronically ill adolescents].

Introduction: The association of chronic diseases with eating disorders requires increased attention due to the potential for serious complications and increased risk of mortality. Eating disorders and sub-clinical eating disorders are associated with maladaptive emotion regulation, which may be both triggers and maintaining factors of the disease. To our knowledge, the role of cognitive emotion regulation in eating disorders in adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease and type 1 diabetes mellitus has not been investigated to date. Objective: We analysed the relationship between cognitive e

A psychological model of predictive factors of distress following long COVID.

BACKGROUND: Long COVID, described as "the continuation or development of new symptoms 3 months after the initial SARS-CoV-2 infection", is estimated to affect at least 10-20 % of all cases of acute SARS-CoV-2 infection. Because of its novelty, information regarding the experience of Long COVID is still emerging. METHODS: This study examines psychological distress in two long COVID populations, and their experience of fatigue, cognitive failures, experiential avoidance, rumination, and perceived injustice. Participants were recruited via a long COVID hospital clinic and online self-diagnosing

Influence of perceived trauma on the cognitive processing model of posttraumatic growth among university students.

This study examined whether perceiving an event as a trauma influenced a cognitive processing model explaining posttraumatic growth (PTG). A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted with 311 university students from eight universities in Japan. The participants provided information about the most stressful event they had experienced and completed the expanded version of the PTG Inventory, Core Belief Inventory, Event Related Rumination Inventory, and Cognitive and Emotional Processing from Disclosure Inventory. A multi-group structural equation modeling was conducted by dividing the

Default mode network connectivity associated with rumination in major depressive disorder: A systematic review of resting-state fMRI studies.

BACKGROUND: Rumination is a central cognitive mechanism in major depressive disorder (MDD) that contributes to symptom persistence, recurrence, and relapse. Although resting-state abnormalities of the default mode network (DMN) are widely reported in depression, it remains unclear which alterations are specifically associated with depressive rumination rather than broader MDD-related dysfunction. OBJECTIVE: To synthesise resting-state fMRI evidence on DMN functional connectivity associated with rumination in clinically diagnosed depression. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, and

Gone fishin'… for distinct patterns of belief-updating in late-life worry and rumination.

INTRODUCTION: Worry and rumination are two common forms of repetitive negative thinking encountered as core symptoms of anxiety and depression. They are difficult to treat and increase the risk of relapse for remitted depressive and anxiety disorders, especially in late-life. We propose that dysfunctional belief-updating is a fundamental cognitive mechanism underlying repetitive negative thinking and use a Bayesian model to test whether distinct components of belief updating are differentially associated with worry and rumination. METHODS: We recruited 83 older participants (age≥50) dimension

Review article: the pathophysiology, differential diagnosis and management of rumination syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Rumination syndrome, characterised by the effortless, often repetitive, regurgitation of recently ingested food into the mouth, was originally described in children and in the developmentally disabled. It is now well-recognised that rumination syndrome occurs in patients of all ages and cognitive abilities. AIM: To review a scholarly review on our current understanding of the rumination syndrome. METHODS: The review was conducted on the basis of a medline search to identify relevant publications pertaining to the pathophysiology, clinical diagnosis and management of rumination sy

A Positive Role of Negative Mood on Creativity: The Opportunity in the Crisis of the COVID-19 Epidemic.

The COVID-19 epidemic is associated with negative mood, which has the potential to be a powerful driver of creativity. However, the influence of negative mood on cognitive creativity and emotional creativity remains elusive. Previous research has indicated that self-focused attention is likely to be related to both negative mood and creativity. The current study introduced two self-focused attention variables (i.e., rumination, reflection) to explore how negative mood might contribute to cognitive creativity and emotional creativity. Based on a sample of 351 participants, our study found that

Development and Initial Validation of a Scale to Measure Cognitive Demands of Flexible Work.

With globalization, digitalization, and the spread of information and communication technologies, rules regulating work have been softened or completely abolished. Consequently, employees face additional cognitive demands to plan, structure, and coordinate their work. To capture these demands of contemporary work, we constructed and initially validated the Cognitive Demands of Flexible Work (CODE) scale. The scale comprises four subscales (i.e., structuring of work tasks, planning of working times, planning of working places, and coordinating with others). We initially validated the scale in t

Cognitive coping and anxiety symptoms among people who seek help for fear of flying.

INTRODUCTION: Fear of flying among potential passengers is rather common. In order to treat fear of flying most efficiently, it is important to find out which aspects are related to flight anxiety. The objective of the present study was to examine the extent to which various cognitive coping strategies in response to a flight were used by airline passengers and their relationship with anxiety symptoms. METHOD: A total of 261 persons who were all seeking treatment for fear of flying filled in the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, the anxiety subscales of the Symptom Check List (SCL-9

Exercise intervention for rumination: from neural mechanisms to clinical applications.

Rumination is a core modifiable cognitive risk factor for the onset and maintenance of mood and anxiety disorders. Exercise emerges as a safe, accessible, and scalable non-pharmacological intervention with potential to mitigate rumination and enhance mental health. This review synthesizes evidence on the neurobiological mechanisms and clinical efficacy of exercise interventions for rumination. Evidence suggests that exercise modulates activity in the default mode network and PFC-limbic circuits, and promotes the release of key neurotransmitters and neurotrophic factors. Therapeutic outcomes ar

Individual differences in rumination in healthy and depressive samples: association with brain structure, functional connectivity and depression.

BACKGROUND: Rumination is an important cognitive risk factor for onset and relapse of depression. However, no studies have employed a dimensional approach in investigating the neural correlates of rumination and the relationship with depression. METHOD: Non-clinical healthy subjects (n = 306), who completed the classical rumination and depression scales, were studied using voxel-based morphometry and regional homogeneity (ReHo). Subsequently, mediation analysis was conducted to examine the influence of rumination on the relationship between brain structure and depression. Moreover, depressive

Rumination prospectively predicts executive functioning impairments in adolescents.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The current study tested the resource allocation hypothesis, examining whether baseline rumination or depressive symptom levels prospectively predicted deficits in executive functioning in an adolescent sample. The alternative to this hypothesis was also evaluated by testing whether lower initial levels of executive functioning predicted increases in rumination or depressive symptoms at follow-up. METHODS: A community sample of 200 adolescents (ages 12-13) completed measures of depressive symptoms, rumination, and executive functioning at baseline and at a follow-up

The antidepressant effect of cognitive reappraisal training on individuals cognitively vulnerable to depression: Could cognitive bias be modified through the prefrontal-amygdala circuits?

Cognitive reappraisal (CR) is one of the core treatment components of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and is the gold standard treatment for major depressive disorders. Accumulating evidence indicates that cognitive reappraisal could function as a protective factor of cognitive vulnerability to depression. However, the neural mechanism by which CR training reduces cognitive vulnerability to depression is unclear. There is ample evidence that the prefrontal-amygdala circuit is involved in CR. This study proposes a novel cognitive bias model of CR training which hypothesizes that CR training

Future anxiety and academic burnout among university students: a short-term three-wave longitudinal conditional process study.

BACKGROUND: Future anxiety may be relevant to academic burnout among university students, but its short-term temporally ordered association with burnout and the cognitive processes involved remain unclear. This study tested whether brooding rumination mediated this association and whether physical activity habit automaticity moderated the first stage. METHODS: A short-term three-wave longitudinal questionnaire survey was conducted among 1271 university students recruited from five provinces in China. Future anxiety and physical activity habit automaticity were measured at Time 1, brooding rum

Maternal rumination and well-being in Duchenne muscular dystrophy: Links to children's function and balance.

BACKGROUND: Rumination includes maladaptive forms, such as brooding, and potentially adaptive forms, such as positive rumination. Families navigating the chronic physical decline and lifelong rehabilitation needs of children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) may be susceptible to such thought patterns. We examined associations between maternal rumination, maternal well-being, and children's motor function and balance. METHODS: Forty-one children with DMD (6-17 years) and their mothers (24-43 years) participated. A consecutive convenience sampling strategy was used. Maternal rumination wa
