Effectiveness of health instruction provided by student nurses in rural secondary schools of Zimbabwe: a feasibility study.

This demonstration project used student nurses (n = 12) on community deployment to provide health instruction among rural school-age populations in Zimbabwe. A quasi-experimental (pre- and post-test), non-equivalent control group design was used and consisted of 141 school pupils in the intervention group and 144 pupils in the comparison group (N = 285). The curriculum focused on prevention of STDs, HIV/AIDS and drugs (alcohol, tobacco and marijuana). A gain in health knowledge scores among the intervention group was reported at post-test. More than 70% of the pupils who received health instru

Prevalence of disabling conditions in a rural northern Thai community: a survey conducted by village health communicators.

This report presents a survey of disabling conditions conducted by village health communicators (VHCs) in 1989 in a rural northern Thai community. The disabled were first identified by a VHC and then examined clinically and socially by a health care team both to confirm the clinical diagnosis and to formulate an appropriate treatment plan. The overall prevalence rate of disabled persons was 6.3/1,000 population. The prevalence rate was higher for males than females and increased with age. Locomotor disability (48.8%) was the most commonly identified disabling condition, with visual disability

The impact of a health education course on maternal knowledge: a comparative study in a low socioeconomic rural region.

A comprehensive health education course was designed for mothers in West Bank villages, a relatively low socioeconomic population. The course focused on nutrition, hygiene, child development, and first aid. It was taught by specially trained local instructors in small classes characterized by an individualized teaching method. To evaluate the contribution of the course, the level of knowledge in topics taught in the course was tested. The test was personally administered by trained interviewers to 241 course participants and to a comparison group of 284 mothers who had not participated. As exp

The development and implementation of a rural consortium program to provide early, preventive school mental health services.

This article describes the development and implementation of a rural consortium of school-based programs for early detection and prevention of maladjustment. The program expanded considerably the reach of early services to young children. It also stimulated communication, interaction and support among professionals in participating districts. Program evaluation data provided evidence of its efficacy. Extensions of the consortium model to other rural districts are reported and the utility of the approach for addressing the mental health problems of children in under-resourced rural school distr

Monetary incentives in primary health care and effects on use and coverage of preventive health care interventions in rural Honduras: cluster randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Scaling-up of effective preventive interventions in child and maternal health is constrained in many developing countries by lack of demand. In Latin America, some governments have been trying to increase demand for health interventions by making direct payments to poor households contingent on them keeping up-to-date with preventive health services. We undertook a public health programme effectiveness trial in Honduras to assess this approach, contrasting it with a direct transfer of resources to local health teams. METHODS: 70 municipalities were selected because they had the co

Recruitment strategies for a randomized controlled trial in a rural American Indian community: the Cooking for Health Study.

BACKGROUND: Conducting diet-focused interventions in rural, American Indian (AI), and/or under-resourced communities is critical to improve health. However, interventions that may work in urban or suburban settings may not work in rural or under-resourced communities due to differences in types of locally available food, food preferences, food insecurity, and/or limited access to grocery stores or supermarkets. This paper describes the acceptability of recruitment strategies used in the Cooking for Health (CFH) study, a culturally targeted healthy food budgeting, purchasing, and cooking skills

Health Care Transition Experiences for Rural and Urban Autistic Adolescents and Young Adults: A Qualitative Analysis.

Health care transition (HCT) is underexplored among autistic adolescents and young adults (AYAs). We explored autistic AYAs' HCT experiences through virtual semi-structured interviews with 19 participants (mean age = 21.4 years; range = 15-25). Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis and interpreted through self-determination theory (SDT). Participants described HCT as marked by increased expectations for independent health care management without commensurate preparation, relational continuity, or structural support. Findings were organized around SDT domains of competence, auton

Assessment of Oral Health Disparities and Barriers to Care among Underserved Populations in Urban and Rural Settings.

INTRODUCTION: Oral health disparities persist between urban and rural populations, particularly among underserved communities. Geographic isolation, financial constraints, and lack of access to dental services contribute significantly to these disparities. Rural populations often encounter greater barriers in accessing healthcare facilities, whereas urban underserved groups face challenges such as overburdened public health systems. This study aims to assess and compare the disparities in oral health outcomes and the barriers to care faced by underserved populations in both urban and rural set

Adaptation of a digital health intervention for rural adults: application of the Framework for Reporting Adaptations and Modifications-Enhanced.

INTRODUCTION: Adaptation is a key aspect of implementation science; interventions frequently need adaptation to better fit their delivery contexts and intended users and recipients. As digital health interventions are rapidly developed and expanded, it is important to understand how such interventions are modified. This paper details the process of engaging end-users in adapting the PREVENT digital health intervention for rural adults and systematically reporting adaptations using the Framework for Reporting Adaptations and Modifications-Enhanced (FRAME). The secondary objective was to tailor

Informing Mobile Health Policy for Pregnant Women in Rural Populations in Canada, with a Focus on Pre-Eclampsia.

Canadian healthcare suffers rural disparities, especially in maternal and prenatal care. Drawing on a literature review, the paper highlights the potential of mobile health (mHealth) applications to bridge this gap and improve maternal care in rural communities. mHealth tools have great potential for knowledge and trust-building among healthcare workers and pregnant women. To support the success of these solutions, more funding and policy support are required. mHealth solutions have a great potential for great economic savings while addressing healthcare disparities and ensuring everyone has a

Noncompliance with Guidelines on the Use of Ultrasound and Pentoxifylline in the Treatment of Venous Ulcers in a Rural Health Care System.

Guidelines based on randomized controlled data recommend patients with newly diagnosed venous leg ulcers (VLUs) to undergo venous reflux duplex ultrasound (US) and be considered for treatment with pentoxifylline to accelerate ulcer healing. A retrospective review was conducted of 2,061 patients with VLU diagnosed between 2011 and 2020 in a rural health care system to identify factors associated with increased or decreased likelihood of being prescribed venous reflux duplex US and pentoxifylline. Venous reflux duplex US (16%) and pentoxifylline (0.7%) were prescribed infrequently. Evaluation by…

Behavioural health outcomes in veterans compared to nonveterans by rural and urban areas in Alabama, 2015-2018.

In the United States, tobacco use, alcohol consumption and substance use disorders are more prevalent among veterans when compared to nonveterans. This is also seen in Alabama, which led the researchers to review county level data to examine possible links between substance use, mental health and suicide by veteran status. This study sought to evaluate behavioural health outcomes and impacting factors for military veterans and nonveterans living in rural and urban areas of Alabama. In phase one, we developed Alabama-specific behavioural health outcomes at the state and county level for militar
