Relationships between gustatory function tests.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationships among four different gustatory function tests in healthy young adults: electrogustometry (EGM), filter paper disk (FPD), whole-mouth, and taste strip methods. The relationships of the results of gustatory function tests with salivary flow rate were also investigated. METHODS: Sixty healthy young adults (30 men, 26.9 ± 4.7 years; 30 women, 25.7 ± 4.6 years) who did not have disorders or conditions related with gustatory function were included. Four different gustatory function tests using the EGM, FPD, whole-mouth, and taste strip methods were perfo

Stimulating the discussion on saliva substitutes: a clinical perspective.

Xerostomia is a significant problem commonly faced by patients and oral health practitioners. There is no cure for this condition, which commonly manifests as a side effect of medications, head and neck irradiation and other systemic conditions, such as Sjögren's syndrome and type 2 diabetes. It may also arise idiopathically. Therefore, treatment is palliative and takes the form of oral lubricants and saliva substitutes which aim to reduce symptoms associated with xerostomia as well as prevent oral disease secondary to it. Recently there has been an expansion of the number and range of product

Salivary secretory immunoglobulin a response of elite speed skaters during a competition period.

We aimed to determine the responses of salivary secretory immunoglobulin A (SIgA) and the incidence of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) symptoms among elite speed skaters during an actual competition period. The subjects were 8 international-class elite speed skaters. Saliva samples were obtained 3, 2, and 1 days before the race, the day of the race, and 1 day after the race. Salivary secretory immunoglobulin A concentration was measured by enzyme immunoassay, and SIgA secretion rate was calculated. A visual analogue scale was used to subjectively assess fatigue and tension. Daily URT

Upfront submandibular salivary gland transfer in pharyngeal cancers.

Head and neck irradiation results in salivary dysfunction and subsequent xerostomia. Twenty two patients with squamous cancer of oropharynx or hypopharynx underwent contralateral submandibular salivary gland transfer (SMSGT) to submental triangle to shield it from subsequent radiotherapy. Resting salivary outputs of transferred and untransferred gland (control) were measured before and after SMSGT and following radiotherapy, by cannulating individual submandibular duct. They were compared by paired samples t-test. Following radiation therapy transferred gland retained 73% and untransferred gla

Effects of tobacco deprivation on alcohol cue reactivity and drinking among young adults.

Nicotine and alcohol may have common neurobiological mechanisms of reinforcement. Therefore, withholding one substance might result in compensatory increases in self-administration of the other. This laboratory study investigated the effects of brief tobacco deprivation on alcohol cue-elicited urges to drink, corresponding psychophysiological reactions, and alcohol consumption. Young adults (N=78) who were moderate to heavy smokers and drinkers were stratified and randomized to a 2 x 2 design. Participants were either deprived of tobacco for 5 h or not deprived and then exposed to in vivo alco

Botulinum toxin A: a new option for treatment of drooling in children with cerebral palsy. Presentation of a case series.

UNLABELLED: Drooling beyond the age of 4 years is pathological, particularly if it occurs in children with neurological and developmental impairment and disability. Considering the therapeutic spectrum of botulinum toxin A and in view of the innervation of the salivary glands, we postulated that intraglandular injections into the submandibular glands with botulinum toxin A could reduce the secretion of saliva and consequently decrease drooling. Three patients with cerebral palsy and severe drooling were selected and evaluated over a 4-month period. Under ultrasound guidance, one dose of botuli

The management of drooling in children and patients with mental and physical disabilities: a literature review.

Amongst the duties of the paediatric dentist is the provision of oral care to patients with the problem of drooling. Many, but certainly not all, of these patients have physical and/or learning disabilities. Various methods have been advocated for the management of drooling in the paediatric patient and older patients with disabilities, including behavioural programmes, biofeedback techniques, physiotherapy, biofunctional oral appliances, medication and surgery. It is of paramount importance that the patients and/or carers understand the advantages and disadvantages of any treatment method bei

Sequential secretion of rat submandibular kallikrein and peroxidase during intermittent sympathetic stimulation.

Secretion of peroxidase from acinar cells, true tissue kallikrein (rK1) from granular tubules and total protein have been assessed in sequential samples of rat submandibular saliva formed during intermittent periods of sympathetic stimulation in bursts of 50 Hz 1 s every 10 s at 5 V, for 1 or 2 min each with 2 min intervals between periods. This protocol was repeated twice after 1 h rest pauses. The salivary flow remained greater throughout than when using ongoing burst stimulation. Protein secretion was considerable in the first 2 samples (1 min followed by 2 min) reaching the remarkable conc

Evaluation of antimuscarinic activity in human volunteers: a teaching aid in clinical pharmacology.

The antimuscarinic activity of oxyphenonium bromide, diphenhydramine hydrochloride and astemizole were evaluated in six volunteers. The parameters used were salivary secretion, heart rate and pupillary size. The results indicated that the changes in heart rate and pupillary size and measurements were not convenient parameters for class room demonstration. However, salivary secretion and dryness of mouth were found to be reliable parameters for measurement. It was concluded that simple procedures like evaluation of antimuscarinic activity could be introduced as teaching aids in clinical pharmac

Salivary flow induction by buccal permucosal pilocarpine in anesthetized beagle dogs.

We tested whether permucosal delivery of pilocarpine nitrate could be used to elicit significant salivary secretion. Pilocarpine (pKa 6.6 at 37 degrees C) was applied as solutions (pHs 5.6, 6.6, 7.6; 15 mg/mL) to the buccal mucosa (2.8 cm2) of 6 anesthetized dogs. Saliva was collected continuously from cannulated submandibular and parotid ducts and blood sampled during and after drug administration. Plasma pilocarpine levels were determined by reversed-phase HPLC. Absorption rates were determined by use of data from separate zero-order intravenous infusions to the same dogs. Pilocarpine was bu

Low-dose radiation therapy for benign salivary disorders.

Two patients, one with a persistent salivary fistula after surgery for a skin tumor overlying the parotid region, and the other with a ranula recurrent after surgery, were treated with low-dose irradiation. Both problems resolved after a total dose of less than 30 Gy, and neither patient experienced xerostomia. In selected patients, low-dose radiation therapy offers a solution to persistent salivary flow refractory to surgical management.

Salivary secretion and seasickness susceptibility.

The salivary flow rate and composition of 2 groups of 31 subjects, one group at each extreme of the seasickness susceptibility scale, were compared. No significant differences were found between the two groups in flow rates and electrolyte concentrations of whole resting and stimulated saliva. Amylase activity and rate of secretion in resting saliva were significantly higher in subjects susceptible to seasickness as compared with nonsusceptible subjects. Also, the total protein rate of secretion in resting saliva was significantly higher in the susceptible group. The present findings could be

Changes in the human light reflex as a measure of the anticholinergic effects of drugs. A comparison with other measures.

Single oral doses of atropine, nortriptyline, procyclidine and lactose dummy were administered double-blind to eight healthy young subjects in a balanced, crossover study. Television pupillometry was used to measure the anticholinergic effects of these drugs on the pupil diameter in darkness and the reflex response to light flashes. The sensitivity of this method was compared with conventional autonomic function tests, viz. salivary secretion, radial pulse, forearm sweat gland activity and distance to visual near point. Visual analogue scales were used to obtain subjective measures of sedative

Some effects of injected hyoscine butylbromide: a versatile class experiment in human pharmacology.

1 An experiment with hyoscine butylbromide has been used to demonstrate how drug effects differ in intensity and time course after intravenous (20 mg) and subcutaneous (40 mg) injection with and without massage of the injection site. It also demonstrates how objective and subjective observations may be related, and gives students practice in the interpretation of experimental data. 2 The experiment takes about 2 h, and the effects of the drug have worn off completely after about 3 hours. 3 The structure of the discussion of the experiment and its results with the students are described to draw

Organophosphate Chemical Nerve Agents, Oxidative Stress, and NADPH Oxidase Inhibitors: An Overview.

Organophosphates (OPs) are potent anti-acetylcholinesterase compounds historically used as pesticides and exploited in chemical warfare. Exposure to OPs initiates cholinergic crisis with both peripheral and central effects such as salivation, lacrimation, urination, and defecation (SLUD), and status epilepticus (SE), a prolonged state of seizure. Standard medical countermeasures atropine, oximes, and benzodiazepines reduce mortality, control peripheral symptoms, and terminate SE. However, they do not attenuate the consequences of SE, including neurodegeneration, oxidative stress, neuroinflamma…
