HIV self-testing adoption and post-test linkage to care among men who have sex with men in China: a nationwide cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: HIV self-testing (HIVST) was recommended to improve HIV testing services. China initiated some of the first HIVST pilots in the world, providing a unique opportunity for implementation research. We aim to investigate HIVST adoption and its following linkage to care among Chinese men who have sex with men (MSM). METHODS: Data were collected using an online questionnaire distributed on major social media platforms in 2018, one year after HIVST was officially endorsed and allowed for sale. MSM who were at least 16 years old, assigned as male at birth, and ever tested for HIV were eli…

Supervised blood-based self-sample collection and rapid test performance: a valuable alternative to the use of saliva by HIV testing programmes with no medical or nursing staff.

OBJECTIVES: Some saliva-based HIV testing programmes have resulted in an unacceptable percentage of false positives. Many countries require blood-based testing programmes to have doctors/nurses. The authors evaluate whether, after brief training and under the supervision of a skilled counsellor, blood-based self-sample collection and rapid test performance could be a valuable alternative. METHODS: 208 Spanish-speaking attendees at a street-based HIV testing programme in Madrid participated in the study. Participants were tested twice, first in the study and then in the programme, using the sa

'Self-collected upper respiratory tract swabs for COVID-19 test': A feasible way to increase overall testing rate and conserve resources in South Africa.

Disparity in the testing rate of SARS-CoV-2 amongst different countries and regions is a very big challenge in understanding the COVID-19 pandemic. Although some developed countries have a very high testing rate and subsequently a high number of confirmed cases, less developed countries have a low testing rate and an illusive positivity rate. Collection of the upper respiratory specimen is not often comfortable. The discomfort could be accompanied with epistaxis and headache in some patients. The trained personnel taking the swab is forced to protect self with personal protective equipment (PP

Feasibility of a community-based cervical cancer screening with "test and treat" strategy using self-sample for an HPV test: Experience from rural Cameroon, Africa.

To achieve higher coverage and effectiveness in limited-resource settings, World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for cervical cancer prevention recommend a screen-and-treat strategy with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) testing. We piloted a real-word project to examine the feasibility of this approach in rural Cameroon. Nurses from the Women's Health Program (WHP) of the Cameroon Baptist Convention Health Services (CBCHS) educated women in remote villages on cervical cancer prevention. At a follow-up visit, they explained to nonpregnant women aged 30-65 how to self-collect vaginal sp

Sociodemographic and health-related predictors of self-reported mammogram, faecal occult blood test and prostate specific antigen test use in a large Australian study.

BACKGROUND: While several studies have examined factors that influence the use of breast screening mammography, faecal occult blood tests (FOBT) for bowel cancer screening and prostate specific antigen (PSA) tests for prostate disease in Australia, research directly comparing the use of these tests is sparse. We examined sociodemographic and health-related factors associated with the use of these tests in the previous two years either alone or in combination. METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of self-reported questionnaire data from 96,711 women and 82,648 men aged 50 or over in The 45 and Up

'Bringing testing closer to you': barriers and facilitators in implementing HIV self-testing among Filipino men-having-sex-with-men and transgender women in National Capital Region (NCR), Philippines - a qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: Our study identified barriers and facilitators in implementing HIV self-testing (HIVST), including the perceptions of men-having-sex-with-men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW) on HIVST. Furthermore, we explored the current knowledge, practices and potential of HIVST among the MSM and TGW populations. DESIGN: Qualitative in-depth key informant interviews were administered using semistructured interviews administered in both English and Filipino. Thematic analysis of the findings was done after transcribing all audio recordings. SETTING: The study was done in the National Capital R…

The relationship between academic self-efficacy and test anxiety: a meta-analysis of Chinese secondary school students.

Existing empirical studies report inconsistent correlation coefficients, ranging from -0.105 to -0.792, for the association between academic self-efficacy and test anxiety among Chinese secondary school students. Although evidence indicates that academic self-efficacy predicts test anxiety more strongly than domain-general self-efficacy (global confidence across all life domains), most prior meta-analyses have focused on the latter rather than on academic self-efficacy (perceived competence in specific academic domains). Furthermore, few quantitative meta-analyses have systematically decompose

Can a Variant of the Implicit Association Test Detect Nonsuicidal Self-Injury in a Clinical Population? A Registered Report.

BACKGROUND: Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a severe and prevalent mental health problem. Measures to detect which individuals are at risk of engaging in NSSI would be valuable for clinical practice. However, we still lack strong predictors of future NSSI behaviour, with the most notable exception being prior NSSI behaviour. Yet, the measurement of prior NSSI behaviour with self-report measures can be difficult because individuals may be motivated to conceal this harmful behaviour. To overcome this problem, an implicit measure was developed that assesses automatic responding to statements ab

Using Graphics as an Alternative to Written Instructions: Adapting Oral Self-Implemented Test Instructions for Tanzanian Youth.

In sub-Saharan Africa, HIV is the leading cause of death among 15-24-year-olds. Tanzanian youth rank fifth in HIV prevalence, yet testing rates are low. Dissemination of oral HIV self-implemented tests (Oral-SIT) may improve access if tests are coupled with graphic instructions to address low literacy. This study analyzed how a graphic instruction book (GIB) alone, compared to a GIB combined with an instructional video (GIB-video), affected comprehension of the Oral-SIT kit procedures. In a randomized experiment (N = 257; 14-19 yrs), we analyzed misunderstandings of testing procedures across t

Variables that impact HPV test accuracy during vaginal self collection workflow for cervical cancer screening.

Vaginal self collection (SC) is safe and effective for human papillomavirus (HPV) testing and can increase cervical cancer screening coverage for underserved women. To better understand the impact of SC methodology on HPV test outcomes, empirical testing was conducted using different swab collection workflows. Deposition of the collection swab into resuspension buffer resulted in a 2.4-cycle reduction in threshold detection of human beta-hemoglobin during PCR when compared to "swirl-and-toss". In addition, reducing the swab resuspension volume from 10 mL to 3 mL resulted in a 2.6-cycle reducti

Accuracy of immediate self-assessment of neurocognitive test performance: Associations with psychiatric diagnosis and longitudinal psychotic symptoms.

Participants with schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorder (BD) have challenges in self-evaluation of their cognitive and functional abilities, referred to as introspective accuracy (IA). Although psychotic symptoms are commonly found to be uncorrelated with cognitive performance, many models of the development of delusions focus on failures in self-assessment and responses biases during momentary monitoring. We performed a single 4-test cognitive assessment on 240 participants (schizophrenia n = 126; bipolar disorder n = 114) and asked them to make a judgment about their performance immediate

Test-Retest Reliability of Self-Reported Substance Use and Sexual Risk Behavior Among at-Risk Adolescents.

Adolescents often engage in behaviors such as substance use and risky sexual activity that can lead to negative health and psychological consequences for themselves and others. Accurate measurement of these behaviors in surveys is challenging given that the behaviors are often viewed as undesirable and/or are illegal, so it is important to test the psychometric properties of instruments used to assess adolescent risk behaviors. The current study aimed to assess the test-retest reliability of a widely used measure of youth risk-taking behavior, the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). A sample of

Autonomy and Care in Context: The Paradox of Sex Workers' Acceptability of HIV Self-Tests in São Paulo, Brazil.

Cisgender female sex workers (CFSW) continue to face structural barriers to HIV prevention. We analyzed the acceptability of the oral HIV self-test (HIV-ST) among CFSW as part of a pragmatic trial on HIV prevention in Brazil. Data from in-depth interviews conducted with 12 women from diverse sex worker contexts and participant observation were analyzed using thematic analysis. CFSW valued autonomy in their workplaces and saw the HIV-ST as a possibility for self-care. Some feared clients' reactions, manager reprimands, and a positive result. HIV and sex work stigma largely drove self-care pract

Evaluation of the effectiveness of high-risk human papilloma self-sampling test for cervical cancer screening in Bolivia.

BACKGROUND: In Bolivia the incidence and mortality rates of uterine cervix cancer are the highest in America. The main factor contributing to this situation is the difficulty of establishing and maintaining quality prevention programs based on cytology. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of HR-HPV testing on self-collected samples to detect cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia and identify the best combination of screening tests. METHODS: A total of 469 women, divided in two groups, were included in this study. The first group included 362 women that underwent three consecutively primary s
