Exploring efficient and effective mammalian models for Alzheimer's disease.

The aim of this study was to explore and discuss efficient and effective mammalian models for Alzheimer's disease (AD). In this study, effic … cchus), and dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) are candidates of promising and effective AD models. Tree shrews (Tupaia belangeri), guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus), and evolutionary related species including degus (Octodon degus) constitute an alternative group of AD models that remain underexplored but potentially efficient and effective. These mammalian model …

The role of transforming growth factor beta in myopia development.

Myopia is widely recognized as an epidemic. Studies have found a link between Transforming Growth Factor-beta (TGF-β) and myopia, but the specific molecular mechanisms are not fully understood. In this study, a monocular model in tree shrews (Tupaia belangeri) was established to verify the molecular mechanism of TGF-β in myopia. The results indicated that there were significant changes in TGF-βs during the treatment of myopia, which could enhance the refractive ability and axial length of the eye. Immunohistochemical staining, real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR, and immunoblotting results …

A comprehensive review of Langya virus and framework for future zoonotic disease control.

First reported in August 2022, the Langya virus (LayV) has emerged as a potential global health threat in the post-COVID-19 era. Preliminary reports show that 35 patients near Shandong and Henan, China experienced a febrile acute LayV infection. We conducted this review following the PRISMA protocol to synthesise current knowledge on LayV's characteristics in terms of molecular, clinical, and public health perspectives. This virus belongs to the Paramyxoviridae family and carries a non-segmented, single-stranded negative-sense RNA genome. Shrews may be the natural reservoir of the virus. Clini…

Evolution of antigenic diversity in the tick-transmitted bacterium Borrelia afzelii: a role for host specialization?

Antigenic diversity in pathogenic microbes can be a result of at least three different processes: diversifying selection by acquired immunity, host-pathogen coevolution and/or host specialization. Here, we investigate whether host specialization drives diversity at ospC (which encodes an immunodominant surface protein) in the tick-transmitted bacterium Borrelia afzelii. We determined prevalence and infection intensity of ospC strains in naturally infected wild mammals (rodents and shrews) by 454 amplicon sequencing in combination with qPCR. Neither prevalence nor infection intensity of specifi…

Empirical demonstration of hybrid chromosomal races in house mice.

Western house mice (Mus musculus domesticus) and common shrews (Sorex araneus) are important models for study of chromosomal speciation. Both had ancestral karyotypes consisting of telocentric chromosomes, and each is subdivided into numerous chromosomal races many of which have resulted from fixation of new mutations (Robertsonian fusions and whole-arm reciprocal translocations). However, some chromosomal races in both species may alternatively have originated through hybridization, with particular homozygous recombinant products reaching fixation. Here, we demonstrate the process of generati…

Structure and function of the mammalian middle ear. I: Large middle ears in small desert mammals.

Many species of small desert mammals are known to have expanded auditory bullae. The ears of gerbils and heteromyids have been well described, but much less is known about the middle ear anatomy of other desert mammals. In this study, the middle ears of three gerbils (Meriones, Desmodillus and Gerbillurus), two jerboas (Jaculus) and two sengis (elephant-shrews: Macroscelides and Elephantulus) were examined and compared, using micro-computed tomography and light microscopy. Middle ear cavity expansion has occurred in members of all three groups, apparently in association with an essentially 'fr…

[Yersinia pestis and plague - an update].

The plague of man is a severe, systemic bacterial infectious disease. Without antibacterial therapy, the disease is associated with a high case fatality rate, ranging from 40% (bubonic plague) to nearly 100% (septicemic and pneumonic plague). The disease is caused by Yersinia pestis, a non-motile, gram-negative, facultative anaerobic bacterium belonging to the family of Enterobacteriaceae. In nature, Y. pestis has been found in several rodent species and some other small animals such as shrews. Within its reservoir host, Y. pestis circulates via flea bites. Transmission of Y. pestis to humans …

[Pathomorphological characteristics of the experimental infection in animals infected with viruses of the rabies antigenic group].

Comparison of pathomorphological lesions in the brains of white mice inoculated with viruses isolated in Africa from shrews, in America from bats, in Czechoslovakia from rodents (6 strains) and classified into the rabies group, with those observed in the same animal species infected with street rabies virus and virus of human acute encephalomyelitis (HAE) established the peculiar features of the reactive processes distinguishing these infections from each other. In contrast to the reactions after inoculation with street rabies virus and HAE, 24 hours after inoculation of white mice with Lagos …

Molecular Mechanisms and Animal Models of HBV-Related Hepatocellular Carcinoma: With Emphasis on Metastatic Tumor Antigen 1.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is an important cause of cancer death worldwide, and hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a major etiology, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. Lack of sensitive biomarkers for early diagnosis of HCC and lack of effective therapeutics for patients with advanced HCC are the main reasons for high HCC mortality; these clinical needs are linked to the molecular heterogeneity of hepatocarcinogenesis. Animal models are the basis of preclinical and translational research in HBV-related HCC (HBV-HCC). Recent advances in methodology have allowed the development of se

Genomic Characterization of the Novel Bartonella refiksaydamii sp. Isolated from the Blood of a Crocidura suaveolens (Pallas, 1811).

Bartonella species are reemerging infectious agents that are transmitted by arthropod vectors among animals and/or humans. At least 13 of the 35 currently recognized Bartonella species are pathogenic for humans. Most of the pathogenic species, except Bartonella quintana and Bartonella bacilliformis, are zoonotic agents with animal reservoirs, including cats, dogs, coyotes, foxes, cattle, and rodents. In this study, a novel Bartonella species was isolated from the blood of a Crocidura suaveolens (Pallas, 1811) Lesser shrew that was captured in the Bartın region of Northwestern Turkey. The strai

Intranasal vaccination with HBs and HBc protein combined with carboxyl vinyl polymer induces strong neutralizing antibody, anti-HBs IgA, and IFNG response.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection causes acute and chronic hepatitis, which is a major public health concern worldwide. Immunization methods incorporating hepatitis B surface-small (HBs-S) antigen and hepatitis B core antigen (HBc) have been proposed as candidate therapeutic vaccines, but the elimination of existing HBV infection remains a challenge. To enhance the efficacy of HBs and HBc vaccination, we investigated HBs-large (HBs-L) as an immunogen, and carboxyl vinyl polymer (CVP) as an excipient. HBs-S or HBs-L, in combination with HBc antigen, was administered subcutaneously (without CVP)

Expression patterns of Fgf8 and Shh in the developing external genitalia of Suncus murinus.

Reciprocal epithelial-mesenchymal interactions and several signalling pathways regulate the development of the genital tubercle (GT), an embryonic primordium of external genitalia. The morphology of the adult male external genitalia of the Asian house musk shrew Suncus murinus (hereafter, laboratory name: suncus) belonging to the order Eulipotyphla (the former order Insectivora or Soricomorpha) differs from those of mice and humans. However, the developmental process of the suncus GT and its regulatory genes are unknown. In the present study, we explored the morphological changes and gene expr

A Checklist of Chigger Mites (Acari: Trombiculidae and Leeuwenhökiidae) From Taiwan, With Descriptions of Three New Species.

Scrub typhus is a lethal human disease transmitted by larval trombiculid mites (i.e., chiggers) that have been infected with the rickettsia Orientia tsutsugamushi. In total, 21 chigger species are known from Taiwan. We update the checklist of chiggers of Taiwan based on an intensive survey of shrew and rodent hosts in grasslands and agricultural fields in lowland Taiwan, coupled with surveys of forests in one mountainous site and an opportunistic examination of submitted host specimens. Three new species of chiggers, Gahrliepia (Gateria) lieni sp. n., Gahrliepia (Gateria) minuta sp. n., and Ga

Ghrelin and gastrointestinal movement.

Ghrelin is a potent stimulant for gastric emptying and gastrointestinal (GI) movement. Clinically, it has been reported that the intravenous administration of ghrelin accelerates the rate of gastric emptying and induces gastric phase III contractions of the migrating motor complex in healthy volunteers. Recent technical advances in the measurement of GI motility in conscious small animals, including rats, mice, and the house musk shrew (Suncus murinus), have helped to elucidate the precise mechanism of action of ghrelin. Intravenous administration of ghrelin induces fasted motor activities wit
