Silicone sleeves are 1 method of stabilizing bicanalicular silicone intubation near the ostia during dacryocystorhinostomy surgery to prevent tube prolapse. Retained silicone sleeve following dacryocystorhinostomy is a rare and previously unreported complication that can occur despite endoscopic visualization during tube removal, particularly in narrow nasal passages. It is an easily reversible cause of dacryocystorhinostomy failure if identified.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (EN-DCR) is increasing in popularity as a treatment of nasolacrimal obstructions because it has proven to be an effective and safe procedure. In this study the success of EN-DCR combined with or without bicanalicular silicone stents was evaluated in patients with nasolacrimal obstructions.
METHODS: Forty-two consecutive EN-DCR procedures were performed in 36 patients during 2000-2004. The surgery was primary in 23 cases and revision in 19 cases. Bicanalicular silicone stents were inserted in 18 cases and in 24 cases stenting was avoided.

We report the case of a 15-year-old girl with cystic fibrosis and rapidly declining pulmonary function tests who was found to have collapse of the left main bronchus from bronchomalacia. Silicone stents were inserted into the trachea or left main-stem bronchus in 14 children aged 2-69 months (median, 7 months). Indications were as follows: tracheomalacia or airway kinking (7 cases), vascular compression (5 cases), and surgically corrected congenital tracheal stenoses (2 cases). PURPOSE: A case of bilateral arcus-like corneal degeneration in the medial limbal regions following bilateral bicanalicular silicone intubation is reported.
METHODS: Case report.
RESULTS: Bilateral arcus-like corneal opacifications were observed in the medial limbal regions of a 33-year-old woman 3 months after the bilateral silicone intubation with dacryocystorhinostomy. No clinical signs of infection and direct contact of the silicone tubes with those regions of the corneas were observed. A 42-year-old man with human immunodeficiency viral infection developed cytomegaloviral retinitis that was complicated by retinal detachment and was treated with an intravitreous injection of silicone.
