Atopic disease in seven-year-old children. Incidence in relation to family history.

The incidence of atopic disease and its relation to the family history was studied by questionnaire in 1325 children, 7 years of age. A higher incidence of bronchial asthma (2.7%) was found than in a previous Swedish study. The total incidence of atopic disease in the children was 15.1% with a higher level when there was a double parental history of such disease (42.6%) as compared with a single such history (19.8%). When both parents had an identical type of atopic disease, i.e. respiratory or skin, the incidence of atopic disease was higher (72.2%) than when non-identical types occurred in t

Does Poverty Explain All? A Path Analysis of Single Mothers' Dietary Behaviors in Japan.

Background/Objectives: In Japan, single mothers face a high risk of poverty and poorer dietary quality than partnered mothers; however, the pathways underlying these disparities remain unclear. This study examined whether economic status mediates the association between family structure and maternal dietary behaviors and whether intergenerational co-residence modifies these pathways. Methods: Using nationally representative repeated cross-sectional survey data from 2018 to 2022 (N = 1319 mothers), we conducted path analysis of dietary awareness and behaviors. Family structure was classified as

Lack of partner impacts newborn health through maternal depression: A pilot study of low-income immigrant Latina women.

INTRODUCTION: Latina women have a high burden of depression and other mental health issues, particularly in the perinatal period. Suboptimal maternal mental health can have adverse developmental and physiological impacts on child growth. The present study examines the impact of unplanned pregnancy and pregnancy relationship status on prenatal maternal depression in a sample of low-income Latina women. We hypothesized that the association between these prenatal stressors and newborn health would be mediated through prenatal depression. METHOD: The present study included a sample 201 Latina mot

Are single mothers' higher smoking rates mediated by dysfunctional coping styles?

BACKGROUND: Smoking prevalence has been shown to be considerably higher among single mothers as compared to their married or cohabiting counterparts. This study examines whether this could be attributed to single mothers' different capability in dealing with stress. METHODS: Based on cross-sectional data of 3129 German mothers, the study explores the associations between single motherhood, coping styles and moderate and heavy smoking pattern using a regression-based 'parallel multiple mediator model'. RESULTS: Single mothers showed higher rates of negative coping styles than partnered mother

12-month prevalence of depression among single and married mothers in the 1994 National Population Health Survey.

While a number of studies have documented higher period prevalence rates of depression among single as compared to married mothers, all of the data have been based upon community surveys of mental illness. In Canada, all of the published work comes from Ontario. As a result, we do not know whether these results hold true for other regions of the country. Using a nationally representative sample, we find, consistent with previous work, that single mothers have almost double the 12-month prevalence rates of married mothers (15.4% versus 6.8%). As well, there are no significant differences in rat

Do children of lone parents smoke more because their mothers do?

This short report examines the association between smoking behaviours of mothers and their 15 year old children, and whether there is a difference between families headed by a mother living alone or with a partner. It is based on data collected from a cohort of young people and their mothers (N = 967), resident in the West of Scotland. We found no evidence that children of lone mothers smoke more because their mothers do; the familial transmission of smoking behaviour, at 15, appeared to be less apparent in households headed by lone than cohabiting mothers.

Enriched Versus Standard NICU Environments and Preterm Brain Development: A Systematic Review of Structural, Diffusion, and Functional Neuroimaging Studies.

Preterm infants are at increased risk of developing abnormal brain structure. Research has also indicated that the environment of the NICU could affect the early development of the infant's nervous system. Methods used to evaluate brain development and white matter maturation include structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), diffusion tensor imaging, and selected functional MRI techniques. This qualitative systematic review without meta-analysis synthesized evidence from neuroimaging studies evaluating enriched versus standard NICU environments in preterm infants. A systematic literature se

Structural and magnetic properties of mixed-metal (Bi2O2)(Fe1-xMxF4) Aurivillius oxyfluorides.

A series of mixed-metal Aurivillius oxyfluorides of the ideal formula [Bi2O2][Fe1-xMxF4] was synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis with M = Mn, Co, and Ni. We first re-examined the Fe-only compound and deduced that despite the observation of inhomogeneous lattice parameters between batches, the iron valence remains constant around Fe∼2.5+ in all samples measured using Mössbauer spectroscopy. The mixed valency charge compensation is mainly assigned to the formation of Bi vacancies. For the mixed Fe/M phases, the most common observation, using various diffraction techniques, of long-range orderi

The Use of Linked Administrative Data to Examine the Impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences: A Scoping Review of the Literature.

This review explored the use of linked administrative data to study outcomes associated with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), which are … often identified at the level of the "parent/carer," with mothers more likely to be included when a single parent only was analyzed. Health outcomes were the most frequently studied. While linked administrative data provides a powerful tool for examining multiple exposures and outcomes, the review found a potential under-utilization of its full potential, with …

Whole genome sequencing of orofacial cleft trios from the Gabriella Miller Kids First Pediatric Research Consortium identifies a new locus on chromosome 21.

Orofacial clefts (OFCs) are among the most prevalent craniofacial birth defects worldwide and create a significant public health burden. The majority of OFCs are non-syndromic, and the genetic etiology of non-syndromic OFCs is only partially determined. Here, we analyze whole genome sequence (WGS) data for association with risk of OFCs in European and Colombian families selected from a multicenter family-based OFC study. This is the first large-scale WGS study of OFC in parent-offspring trios, and a part of the Gabriella Miller Kids First Pediatric Research Program created for the study of chi
