Childbirth outcomes in rape-related pregnancies: a comparative study of women receiving care in a birthing room designed to promote person-centredness in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

BACKGROUND: There is limited knowledge regarding childbirth outcomes among women with pregnancies resulting from rape. At Panzi Hospital, a tertiary hospital in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a holistic care programme is provided for survivors of sexual violence. OBJECTIVE: Explore childbirth outcomes among women classified as Robson Group 1 who received care in a birthing room designed to promote person-centredness, comparing those with rape-related pregnancies to other women. METHODS: This study was conducted between March 2021 and July 2022, with consecutive collection of chi

Performance of Phenotype Algorithms for the Identification of Opioid-Exposed Infants.

OBJECTIVE: Observational studies examining outcomes among opioid-exposed infants are limited by phenotype algorithms that may under identify opioid-exposed infants without neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS). We developed and validated the performance of different phenotype algorithms to identify opioid-exposed infants using electronic health record data. METHODS: We developed phenotype algorithms for the identification of opioid-exposed infants among a population of birthing person-infant dyads from an academic health care system (2010-2022). We derived phenotype algorithms from combi

Development of a risk score for patients with ischaemic cardiomyopathy.

BACKGROUND: Ischaemic cardiomyopathy is a leading cause of heart failure and is associated with a poor prognosis. AIM: To evaluate predictors of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and to develop a risk score for the disease. METHODS: All patients with ischaemic cardiomyopathy referred to a tertiary hospital between 2010 and 2018 for stress-rest gated single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) were included retrospectively (n=747). Clinical and gated SPECT-derived variables were analysed as predictors of MACE, a combined endpoint of cardiovascular mortality, heart failure hosp

Benefit of endoscopic stenting for dominant strictures in patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis.

Background and study aims  Dominant strictures (DS) occur in up to 60 % of patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). Data regarding the long-term effects of stenting vs. dilation remain limited. The aim of this study was to compare the two treatment modalities in terms of transplantation-free survival. Patients and methods  This single-center, retrospective study examined patients with PSC and DS treated endoscopically with a minimum of 1 year follow-up. Patients were divided into two cohorts: 1) those who received dilation alone; and 2) those who received both dilation and stenting.

Immediate Changes in Perceived Person-Centered Care and Technological Competency Following a One-Day Collective Training Program Among Mongolian Nurse Managers and Nurses Nominated for Managerial Roles: A Pilot Pre-Post Study.

Background/Objectives: Person-centered care (PCC) and the Technological Competency as Caring in Nursing (TCCN) theory are increasingly emphasized in nursing leadership, but no published study has evaluated a PCC/TCCN training program among Mongolian nurse managers. This uncontrolled, single-group pilot pre-post study examined immediate changes in nurse managers' self-reported PCC and TCCN perceptions following a one-day collective training program. Methods: The program was delivered on 30 October 2025 during the 2nd International Nursing Symposium in Mongolia. Using convenience sampling, hospi

Within-person differences in night-shift burden and well-being after ICU versus non-ICU night shifts among resident physicians: a paired survey study.

BACKGROUND: Night shifts are integral to residency training but may disrupt sleep and recovery. ICU versus non-ICU comparisons are often confounded by between-person differences, and night-shift exposure is often operationalized using simple shift counts rather than more proximal indicators of sleep disruption and recovery. METHODS: We conducted a single-center within-person paired survey study (August 2025-January 2026) in a tertiary teaching hospital. Residents completed the same questionnaire within 24 h after one non-ICU night shift (T1) and after their second ICU night shift (T2). Night-

Personality and drug preferences in normal volunteers.

This study examined the relationship between drug preferences as measured in a laboratory-based choice procedure and measures of personality and attitudes toward drugs. Healthy volunteers participated in laboratory-based double-blind studies measuring preference for ethanol or diazepam vs placebo. Frequency of drug choice was examined in relation to subjects' scores on personality questionnaires. Drug choice was not related to any of the personality measures examined. Personality scores were, however, related to both gender and habitual drug use. These data suggest that personality does not st

Common gait modulation by presence of hip assistance, individual motor strategies by assistance timing.

BACKGROUND: Hip-assist soft exosuits are tuned by shifting force-profile timing, yet it remains unclear whether responses to different force profiles generalize across individuals or are largely person-specific. METHODS: In 22 healthy adults walking at 1.1 m/s (two n = 11 cohorts), we compared a suited baseline (Assist-off) with eight timing-varied hip assist force profiles (A-H) parameterized by onset-peak-offset over the gait cycle, and evaluated prolonged exposure to a single profile. Lower-limb kinematics and electromyography (EMG) were measured. Cohort-level differences were tested using

Genomic and Phylogenetic Dissection of SARS-CoV-2 Transmission Networks in Healthcare Workers.

Understanding how SARS-CoV-2 circulates among healthcare workers (HCWs) is critical for maintaining safe hospitals and protecting communities. We retrospectively examined 93 archived nasopharyngeal swabs collected from SARS-CoV-2 positive HCWs and their close contacts at a Turkish university hospital between March 2020 and November 2021. Viral RNA was confirmed by RT-PCR and sequenced with the QIAseq DIRECT SARS-CoV-2 workflow on an Illumina platform; genomes were aligned to the Wuhan-H1 reference and analyzed with maximum-likelihood phylogenetics. Sixty-three individuals formed 20 epidemiolog

Fifty Years of Non-pestis Yersinia Outbreaks in the United States: Patterns, Vehicles, and Surveillance Challenges, 1971-2024.

While non-pestis yersiniosis experienced the largest increase in reported incidence of any bacterial enteric infection in the United States during 2016-2023, yersiniosis source attribution remains poorly understood. To address this gap, we described all yersiniosis outbreaks reported to CDC during 1971-2024. Trends in annual single-etiology foodborne outbreak frequency, including before-versus-after comparisons around major changes in yersiniosis surveillance and diagnostics, were estimated using Bayesian spline regression. Of 56 outbreaks reported, 38 were single-etiology. Outbreaks were link

Feasibility Trial of a Single Session of Crisis Response Planning for Youth at High Risk for Suicide.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among adolescents, yet access to mental health care remains limited. Youth have unique developmental and contextual considerations as they are avid users of digital technologies, which may influence how they engage with mental health interventions. Crisis Response Planning (CRP), a single-session intervention, has shown promise in adults but has not been systematically evaluated in youth. This study tested the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of a chat-based version of CRP for adolescents with suicidal ideation (SI). Fifty-o

Safety of Single-Dose Primaquine in G6PD-Deficient and G6PD-Normal Males in Mali Without Malaria: An Open-Label, Phase 1, Dose-Adjustment Trial.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization recommendation on the use of a single low dose of primaquine (SLD-PQ) to reduce Plasmodium falciparum malaria transmission requires more safety data. METHODS: We conducted an open-label, nonrandomized, dose-adjustment trial of the safety of 3 single doses of primaquine in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD)-deficient adult males in Mali, followed by an assessment of safety in G6PD-deficient boys aged 11-17 years and those aged 5-10 years, including G6PD-normal control groups. The primary outcome was the greatest within-person percentage drop in h

Successful management of bleeding ectopic small bowel varices secondary to portal hypertension: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Bleeding ectopic varices located in the small bowel (BEV-SB) caused by portal hypertension (PH) are rare and life-threatening clinical scenarios. The current management of BEV-SB is unsatisfactory. This retrospective study analyzed four cases of BEV-SB caused by PH and detailed the management of these cases using enteroscopic injection sclerotherapy (EIS) and subsequent interventional radiology (IR). AIM: To analyze the management of BEV-SB caused by PH and develop a treatment algorithm. METHODS: This was a single tertiary care center before-after study, including four patients d

Detecting Mpox Cases Through Wastewater Surveillance - United States, August 2022-May 2023.

In October 2022, CDC's National Wastewater Surveillance System began routine testing of U.S. wastewater for Monkeypox virus. Wastewater surveillance sensitivity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) for Monkeypox virus were evaluated by comparing wastewater detections (Monkeypox virus detected versus not detected) to numbers of persons with mpox in a county who were shedding virus. Case ascertainment was assumed to be complete, and persons with mpox were assumed to shed virus for 25 days after symptom onset. A total of 281 cases and 3,492 wastewater samples from

Influence of TFAP2B and KCTD15 genetic variability on personality dimensions in anorexia and bulimia nervosa.

INTRODUCTION: TFAP2B and KCTD15 are obesity-related genes that interact to regulate feeding behavior. We hypothesize that variability in these loci, isolated or in combination, could also be related to the risk of eating disorders (ED) and/or associated psychological traits. METHODS: We screened 425 participants (169 ED patients, 75 obese subjects, and 181 controls) for 10 clinically relevant and tag single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in KCTD15 and TFAP2B by the Sequenom MassARRAY platform and direct sequencing. Psychometric evaluation was performed with EDI-2 and SCL-90R inventories. RE

The mental health of single homeless people in Northampton hostels.

Much research evidence about homelessness and health relates to large population centres with correspondingly large homeless populations. Such results may not necessarily apply to small towns such as Northampton. A local need was identified for information relating to health and access to health care for homeless people. Seventy five single, homeless people temporarily residing at open access hostels in Northampton were interviewed. The interviews covered: recent accommodation histories recent physical health mental health access to health care current social contacts, life style and aspiratio
