Sleep has been preserved during evolutionary history and is found in all mammalian species and birds. Despite the apparent strong survival advantage of sleep, and the observation in experimental animals that persistent sleep deprivation leads to rapid physical deterioration and death, the function of sleep is poorly understood. Modern neurophysiologic techniques have shown that sleep is not a homogeneous state but rather is divided into rapid eye movement and non-rapid eye movement stages. These two sleep states are as different from one another as sleep is from wakefulness. The advent of poly

Ageing is associated with deterioration of the quality of nocturnal sleep, more frequent siestas in the afternoon, a forward shift of sleep in the 24-hour cycle. In old age sleep disorders are more frequent such as sleep apnoea, the restless feet syndrome, periodic movements of the lower extremities and others. The authors present an account of changes of sleep and vigilance and the most frequent sleep disorders in old age.

We consider the disorders of arousal and sleep-related hypermotor epilepsy as genetic twin-conditions, one without, one with epilepsy. They share an augmented arousal-activity during NREM sleep with sleep-wake dissociations, culminating in sleep terrors and sleep-related hypermotor seizures with similar symptoms. The known mutations underlying the two spectra are different, but there are multifold population-genetic-, family- and even individual (the two conditions occurring in the same person) overlaps supporting common genetic roots. In the episodes of disorders of arousal, the anterior cing

The last 4 decades have seen the emergence of a new medical specialty, sleep medicine. In response to an unfulfilled clinical need, and fueled by better understanding of the significance of sleep disorders, sleep medicine developed medical solutions for age-old problems with sleep and wakefulness. Sleep-disordered breathing has played a central role in this story. Therapy and management offered by the dentist has become recognized as an important aspect of care for patients with SDB. Dentists who offer this service need to become acquainted with the multifactorial nature of sleep medicine to s

The current article reviews adjustments that were made to the classification of sleep disorders in the 11th revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-11) in comparison to the 10th revision of the coding system (ICD-10). A new chapter on sleep-wake disorders was introduced as chapter 7 in ICD-11, removing the distinction in nonorganic and organic sleep disorders that was used in ICD-10. The rationale for this was the commonsense notion that clinicians and researchers have difficulties to identify the etiology of insomnia and to establi

Sleep and circadian disturbances in bipolar disorder are common and persistent within and between illness episodes. Insomnia, hypersomnia, reduced need for sleep, sleep schedule variability and circadian rhythm disorders are frequently observed. In this article, recent research is reviewed suggesting that the presence of sleep disturbance is associated with functional impairment, interacts with other physical and environmental systems (e.g. physical activity, light exposure), and may attenuate response to treatment. Established and emerging treatments for various sleep disturbances are reviewe

In bipolar disorder, episodes of depression and mania are associated with dramatic disturbances in sleep, which experiments show are likely to contribute to the pathogenesis of the episodes. A recent finding that 18 patients' manic-depressive cycles oscillated in synchrony with biweekly surges in amplitude of the moon's tides provided a clue to the cause of the sleep-disturbances. Analyses of one of the patients' sleep-wake cycles suggest that his mood cycles arose when a circadian rhythm that normally is entrained to dawn and controls the daily onset of wakefulness became entrained instead to

PURPOSE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with poor sleep and altered circadian rhythms. Evidence is unclear as to whether these features relate to ongoing psychiatric symptoms of AN, or are merely concomitant with low weight. In this study, we sought to evaluate subjective sleep quality and sleep-wake preferences in a sample of individuals with lifetime AN. Furthermore, we aimed to examine whether sleep quality would significantly predict AN symptom severity, after accounting for demographic features and negative emotions (depression, anxiety and stress).
METHODS: Adults with a lifetime d

OBJECTIVES: Patients with sleep disorders suffer more often from headache after awakening than healthy subjects. However, it still is a matter of controversy whether this applies only to patients with sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) or also to patients with other diagnoses of sleep disorders.
METHODS: We asked all patients in our sleep laboratory about the frequency of past headaches and also ascertained the occurrence of morning headaches after awakening in the sleep laboratory. Polysomnographic recordings from nights before morning headache were compared with nights without following headache. F

BACKGROUND: Sleep problems are a common complaint of parents of preschool children. Children with neurodevelopmental disorders have even more disrupted sleep than typically developing children. Although disrupted nighttime sleep has been reported to affect daytime behavior, the pathway from sleep disruption to sleep problems, to impairments in daytime performance or behavior is not clear. This multi-method, preliminary study assessed this path in 68 children with autism, matched to 57 children with developmental delay without autism and 69 children developing typically.
METHODS: Actigraphy, s

Based on previous findings of frequent sleep problems in children with Down syndrome (DS) and Williams syndrome (WS), the present study aimed to expand our knowledge by using parent report and actigraphy to define sleep problems more precisely in these groups. Twenty-two school-aged children with DS, 24 with WS and 52 typically developing (TD) children took part in the study. Each child wore an actiwatch for a minimum of four nights and parents completed the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ). Sleep problems were common in both developmental disorders. Children with DS had the greate

To explore further the relationship between ease of falling asleep, ability to maintain wakefulness, attention and information processing in sleep apnea and other sleep disorders, we conducted a thorough analysis of the similarities, differences and correlations between auditory and visual P300 amplitudes and latencies, and tests of sleepiness. The 283 consecutive patients presenting with hypersomnia were administered nocturnal polysomnography. Next day they underwent auditory and visual P300 recordings, Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) and Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT). Correlation

Sleep disorders are commonly found as comorbid problems in patients with migraine. Indeed, there are likely to be numerous levels of interaction between migraine and sleep, including physiological, pathological, and pharmacological. Of note, the presence of sleep disorders may be a modifiable factor in the trajectory of migraine, and therefore active enquiry to elicit their presence, and manage them appropriately, could be an important component in the holistic care of patients with migraine. This review attempts to provide an outline of what is known about these relationships and highlight wh

INTRODUCTION: Bipolar disorder (BD) has a high heritability rate. Current studies have been dedicated to identifying prodromes of BD in the offspring of parents with BD (BO) and the sleep patterns of these individuals have been considered important factors.
OBJECTIVE: To describe changes in sleep parameters among offspring of parents with BD when compared to offspring of controls and to identify if changes in parameters and quality of sleep predict the onset of BD among these individuals.
METHODS: PubMed, PsycINFO, and Embase were systematically searched with no year or language restrictions
