We present the case of a 52-year-old woman referred to our service because of extreme ocular surface dryness. The patient showed corneal, conjunctival, and eyelid manifestations of ocular congenital erythropoietic porphyria (CEP). We started treatment with autologous serum, topical steroids, and cyclosporine twice a day, topical retinoids, and intense corneal lubrication. The patient referred significant improvement of ocular bothering and less discomfort since treatment was initiated. We describe the management of the herewith presented case of ocular CEP.

BACKGROUND: Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare, aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) that often affects men over the age of 60. Systemic metastasis of MCL to eyes is rare and intraocular involvement is even rarer, which usually affects the choroid and iris. A 52-year-old male caucasian patient presented with a limbal subconjunctival pigmentation of unknown origin with progressive enlargement over the past years. Differential diagnoses included a malignant melanocytic lesion; therefore, an excisional biopsy was performed. Prior investigations showed no ciliary body or anterior chamber angle involvement. Histological and immunohistochemical analysis revealed the rare diagnosis of a scleral nevus. The clinical, histological and immunohistochemical findings as well as the relevant differential diagnoses are discussed.

We report an unusual case of bilateral eyelid erythema caused by eyelash glue. A 22-year-old woman presented with a 3-day history of bilateral eyelid dermatitis after attaching false eyelashes by using latex-containing glue. Slit-lamp examination revealed erythema and swelling of the upper lids of both eyes. The skin prick test was positive for eyelash glue and her total tear IgE score was high. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of bilateral eyelid dermatitis caused by eyelash glue.

A 47-year-old man with ichthyosis vulgaris presented to our hospital complaining of reduced visual acuity and ocular discomfort in the left eye. Slit-lamp biomicroscopy revealed a thinning about 2mm from the superior limbus and superficial punctate corneal lesions in the left eyes. Corneal topography was 'butterfly-like' in an area of increased elevation in the left eye. Although ichthyosis vulgaris and unilateral superior pellucid marginal degeneration are both uncommon conditions, this is first report about these two conditions in studied together.

PURPOSE: To describe an infrared gonioscopy system designed to observe the anterior chamber angle under natural mydriasis in a completely darkened room.
METHODS: An infrared light filter was used to modify the light source of the slit-lamp microscope. A television monitor connected to a CCD monochrome camera was used to indirectly observe the angle.
RESULTS: Use of the infrared system enabled observation of the angle under natural mydriasis in a completely darkened room.
CONCLUSION: Infrared gonioscopy is a useful procedure for the observation of the angle under natural mydriasis.

We report a case of bilateral factitious crystalline keratopathy in an 18-year-old man. Initial slit-lamp examination revealed corneal ulcers characterized by stromal infiltrates with intrastromal blue refractile crystals O.D. greater than O.S. A 58-year old male with a past history of psychiatric disorders was studied for a persistent serum transaminase increase. Low serum ceruloplasmin level (lower than 3 mg/dL), increased urinary copper excretion, and increased liver tissue copper concentration (1050 mcg/g dry weight) confirmed the diagnosis of Wilsońs disease. Slit lamp examination did not show Kayser-Fleischer rings. D-penicilamin therapy was followed by serum transaminase normalization. Similar late-onset cases of Wilsońs disease are exceptional, but confirm the clinical heterogeneity of the disease.

We describe the utilization of the dermatoscope as a diagnostic tool for the facilitation of early diagnosis of conjunctivitis due to the infestation of the eyes by the sheep nasal botfly in two patients. A 48-year-old man presented with a vascular anomaly of the iris in the left eye. Slit-lamp microscopy revealed dilated and tortuous vessels of the iris between 12 and 4 o'clock. Fluorescein angiography confirmed a diagnosis of arteriovenous (AV) malformation of the iris. The vessel originated at the iris base, passed to the pupillary margin and returned to the base. Such AV-malformations of the iris are very rare, benign vascular anomalies that have to be distinguished from other, potentially malignant pathologies of the iris (e. g. tortuous vessels in iris melanoma).

A case of periocular dirofilariasis has been diagnosed in Iran. A 27-yr old female referred with a history of edema and redness in the left eye since 2 wk ago. On slit lamp examination, a moving thread-like worm was seen in the subconjunctival area. Two days later, a 126 mm long, live filaria worm was extracted from the lower lid subcutaneous tissue. The worm was diagnosed as, likelihood, Dirofilaria immitis on microscopic examinations. The present case suggests that D. immitis can cause periocular infections.

INTRODUCTION: To report the effect of topical latanoprost on the position of a subluxated lens.
CASE PRESENTATION: After 0.005% latanoprost was administered topically to a patient with ocular hypertension due to a pseudoexfoliation syndrome and a subluxated lens, the position of the lens was examined by slit-lamp biomicroscopy, and the ciliary body thickness by ultrasound biomicroscopy. The lens had moved posteriorly, and the thickness of the ciliary body had decreased after the latanoprost.
CONCLUSION: We suggest that the decrease in the thickness of the ciliary body resulted in an increase

A series of 39 subjects, aged under 70, had the numbers of lipid globules counted in the slit lamp within 4 regions of the right eye and 4 regions of the left. The counting was repeated after an averaged period of 12 months (range 7-20 months). The investigation disclosed that the number of lipid globules rises. No instances were detected of a fall in their number, allowance being made for errors of measurement, assessed on the basis of blind double counting. The degeneration is not positively correlated to xanthelasma, diabetes mellitus, or presenile arcus.
