Neurotoxicity and acute renal injury secondary to Russell's viper bite in an individual: a case report from Nepal.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Owing to the high number of envenomation and fatalities, the Russell's viper holds greater medicinal significance than any other Asian serpent. South East Asia is one of the most snakebite-prone regions in the world. Dense population, extensive agricultural practices, the abundance of venomous snake species, and an overall lack of knowledge about primary treatment (first aid) are the major culprits associated with snake bite-related morbidity and mortality. The venom of vipers is known to produce vasculotoxicity and contains hemotoxins. CASE PRESENTATION: The auth

Use of Molecular Diagnostic Tools for the Identification of Species Responsible for Snakebite in Nepal: A Pilot Study.

Snakebite is an important medical emergency in rural Nepal. Correct identification of the biting species is crucial for clinicians to choose appropriate treatment and anticipate complications. This is particularly important for neurotoxic envenoming which, depending on the snake species involved, may not respond to available antivenoms. Adequate species identification tools are lacking. This study used a combination of morphological and molecular approaches (PCR-aided DNA sequencing from swabs of bite sites) to determine the contribution of venomous and non-venomous species to the snakebite bu

Protobothrops mangshanensis bite: first clinical report of envenoming and its treatment.

AIM: This case report presents envenoming by the Chinese pit viper Protobothrops mangshanensis (formerly Zhaoermia) and its treatment. METHODS: A 38 year old snake breeder suffered two-fang bites to elbow by a Chinese pit viper Protobothrops mangshanensis resulting in local edema of the affected arm. No other signs of envenoming appeared. On the 5(th) day following the bite a hematoma developed on the other arm which had been mechanically injured 14 days before. Laboratory testing revealed severe coagulopathy with hypofibrinogenemia and immeasurably prolonged coagulation times. RESULTS: As s

[Changes in blood coagulation time in patients bitten by young and adult Bothrops jararaca snakes].

Three hundred and forty eight cases of bites by adult Bothrops jararaca (group A) were admitted to the Hospital Vital Brazil between 1975 and 1984. These cases were compared to 623 cases of bites by young snakes of the same species (group B) during the same period and at the same hospital. There was no difference between groups regarding age or time between bite and admittance to the hospital. However in group B blood incoagulability was more frequent when compared to group A. We conclude that bites caused by young Bothrops jararaca are more likely to cause blood incoagulability in humans than

Incidence of serum sickness following Indian polyvalent antivenom therapy in a cohort of snake-envenomed patients in rural Sri Lanka.

INTRODUCTION: Serum sickness is a poorly reported delayed adverse reaction following snake antivenom therapy. We aimed to assess the frequency of serum sickness associated with administering Indian polyvalent antivenom in Sri Lanka. METHODS: We recruited patients from the Anuradhapura snakebite cohort who were admitted to a rural tertiary care hospital in Sri Lanka over one year period. Patients were interviewed over the phone 21 to 28 days post-envenoming to collect data on clinical effects: fever/chills, arthralgia/myalgia, rash, malaise, headache, abdominal pain, and nausea/vomiting. The p

Venom Ophthalmia and Ocular Complications Caused by Snake Venom.

Little is known about the detailed clinical description, pathophysiology, and efficacy of treatments for ocular envenoming (venom ophthalmia) caused by venom of the spitting elapid and other snakes, as well as ocular complications caused by snake venom injection. In this paper, we review clinical information of case reports regarding venom ophthalmia and snake venom injection with associated ocular injuries in Asia, Africa, and the United States. We also review the literature of snake venom such as their compositions, properties, and toxic effects. Based on the available clinical information a

Toxicologic information resources for reptile envenomations.

The United States is the largest importer of reptiles in the world, with an estimated 1.5 to 2.0 million households keeping one or more reptiles. Snakes account for about 11% of these imports and it has been estimated that as many as 9% of these reptiles are venomous. Envenomations by nonindigenous venomous species are a rare but often serious medical emergency. Bites may occur during the care and handling of legitimate collections found in universities, zoos, or museums. The other predominant source of exotic envenomation is from amateur collectors participating in importation, propagation, a

Envenomation by the horned viper (Vipera ammodytes L.).

Snake venom poisoning is a medical emergency that requires urgent therapeutic procedures. The treatment of venomous snakebites is still controversial because of unclear therapeutic modalities. Choice of treatment is dictated in part by regional characteristics with regard to patient population and types of venomous snakes. The purpose of the study presented here was to report regional experience with venomous snakebites and to describe first-aid, pre-hospital, and hospital therapeutic procedures for horned viper bite. During a 16-year period, from 1980 to 1996, at the Clinical Hospital Split (

Envenomation by opisthoglyphous snake Thamnodynastes hypoconia (Cope, 1860) (Dipsadinae: Tachymenini) in southern Brazil.

We report here a case of human envenoming by Thamnodynastes hypoconia, a common and abundant non-front-fanged snake belonging to the subfamily Dipsadinae. The case was registered in the municipality of Tapes, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil, in a 27-year-old female. The snakebite was on the wrist of the left arm while handling the snake in a field outing. No pain sensation was noted during the bite, and after 20 minutes edema developed along the hand and forearm with a slight sensation of numbness and mild pain when moving the fingers. After 15 hours, the victim began to develop erythema, para

Snake venom antibodies in Ecuadorian Indians.

Serum samples from 223 Waorani Indians, a tribe in eastern Ecuador, were investigated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for antibodies to snake venom. Seventy-eight per cent were positive, confirming the highest incidence and mortality from snake bite poisoning yet recorded in the world. Most samples were positive for more than one venom antibody. Antibodies were found to venoms of Bothrops viper in 60% of positive cases, of Micrurus coral snake in 21%, and of the bushmaster, Lachesis muta, in 18%. Further studies are needed to determine whether high venom-antibody levels afford protection

Under pressure: Clinical management of venom-induced compartment syndrome in snakebite-A scoping review of the global literature.

BACKGROUND: Venom-induced compartment syndrome (VICS) is a rare but severe complication of snakebite which poses unique challenges in diagnosis and treatment. Published literature largely focuses on VICS in the North American context, while information on clinical presentations, diagnostic and treatment approaches, clinical outcomes and associated challenges from the world's most snakebite endemic regions remain fragmented and scarce. METHODS: A scoping review using PRIMSA-ScR methodology of the global literature on VICS was performed by searching the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases. L

Metabolomics and proteomics: synergistic tools for understanding snake venom inhibition.

Snake envenomation presents a significant global health challenge, especially in rural areas of tropical and subtropical regions. Traditional antivenom therapies face limitations related to efficacy, availability, and specificity, prompting a need for novel approaches. Recent advancements in omics technologies, particularly metabolomics and proteomics, have enhanced our understanding of snake venom composition, toxicity, and potential therapeutic strategies. Metabolomics allows for the study of metabolic changes induced by venom, providing insights into disrupted pathways and possible inhibito

Affected inflammation-related signaling pathways in snake envenomation: A recent insight.

Snake envenomation is well known to cause grievous pathological signs, including haemorrhagic discharge, necrosis, and respiratory distress. However, inflammatory reactions are also common envenoming manifestations that lead to successive damage, such as oedema, ulceration, lymphadenectasis, systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and even multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Interference with the inflammatory burst is hence important in the clinical treatment of snake envenomation. Here, we summarize the typical snake toxins (or venoms) that cause inflammatory reactions and the

A generalized framework for estimating snakebite underreporting using statistical models: A study in Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Snakebite envenoming is a neglected tropical disease affecting deprived populations, and its burden is underestimated in some regions where patients prefer using traditional medicine, case reporting systems are deficient, or health systems are inaccessible to at-risk populations. Thus, the development of strategies to optimize disease management is a major challenge. We propose a framework that can be used to estimate total snakebite incidence at a fine political scale. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: First, we generated fine-scale snakebite risk maps based on the distribution of

Naringenin isolated from Citrus reticulata blanco fruit peel inhibits the toxicity of snake venom proteins - An in vitro and in vivo study.

Snake envenomation is a serious hazard in tropical countries. In the current study, the bioactive compound from the methanolic extract of Citrus reticulata was purified using polarity gradient chromatography and structurally characterized by UV-spectroscopy, NMR, and LC-MS. The purified metabolite, naringenin, inhibited PLA2 (51%) and hemolytic (59.8%) activity of the Naja naja venom. Histopathological examination and edema studies carried out using mice confirmed the inhibitory effects of naringenin. This is the first report on the inhibitory potential of naringenin isolated from Citrus retic

Hepatic inhibitors expression profiling of venom-challenged Sinonatrix annularis and antidotal activities.

Snake venom is considered a "toxin arsenal", and it often induces a series of clinical and pathophysiological symptoms in snakebite victims. Interestingly, toxin inhibitors are commonly found in the serum of snakes and their predators. Sinonatrix annularis is a type of non-venomous snake that was reported to contain an "inhibitor cocktail", including phospholipase A2 inhibitors (PLIs), metalloproteinase inhibitors (SVMPIs), and small serum protein (SSP). However, the sequences and activities of these components remain obscure. In this study, we performed envenomation challenges on S. annularis

Photoresponsive porous ZnO-based broad-spectrum venom first-aid treatment.

A venomous snakebite is an emergency. However, antivenoms are rare and very similar, difficult to produce and preserve, and almost impossible to be used for emergency treatment. Therefore, it would be of great significance to develop convenient, efficient and broad-spectrum snake venom neutralizing nano-materials. In this study, inspired by boiled eggs, a new concept based on a ZnO complex (ZC) for the treatment of snake venoms is proposed. In vitro and in vivo experiments proved that ZC could widely adsorb biological (including snake) venoms and effectively reduce the concentration of toxic p
