Subtypes of social phobia and comorbidity with depression and other anxiety disorders.

Epidemiological studies have identified two subtypes of social phobia: speaking-only social phobia which is characterized by the fear of public speaking situations and complex social phobia which is characterized by the fear of multiple social situations. Speaking-only social phobia most closely corresponds to the DSM-IV's 'nongeneralized social phobia' while complex social phobia resembles 'generalized social phobia'. In contrast to the speaking-only social phobia, the complex form is usually more disabling, familial and longer-lasting. In addition, the complex form has a lower chance of spon

Treatment of social phobia through pure self-help and therapist-augmented self-help.

BACKGROUND: Self-help for social phobia has not received controlled empirical evaluation. AIMS: To evaluate the efficacy of pure self-help through written materials for severe social phobia and self-help augmented by five group sessions with a therapist. These conditions were compared with a waiting-list control and standard, therapist-led group therapy. METHOD: Participants with severe generalised social phobia (n=224) were randomised to one of four conditions. Assessment included diagnoses, symptoms and life interference at pretreatment, 12 weeks and at 24 weeks. RESULTS: A larger percent

The social anxiety spectrum.

Social anxiety disorder is well suited to the spectrum concept because it has trait-like qualities of early onset, chronicity, and no empirically derived threshold that demarcates normal from clinically significant trait social anxiety. Social anxiety disorder has been shown to respond to relatively specific pharmacologic and cognitive-behavioral therapies, which makes identification of other conditions that may lie on the social anxiety disorder spectrum important because of possible treatment implications. Biologic markers associated with social anxiety disorder also may be shared by similar

Is the delay discounting paradigm useful in understanding social anxiety?

The delay discounting paradigm was used to examine its utility in understanding motivational factors among socially anxious individuals. Participants (n=88) who reported high and low levels of social anxiety were randomly assigned to either a social threat or non-threat condition and their subsequent rates of discounting were examined. A significant difference in rates of discounting was found between the high and low social anxiety groups within the non-threat condition, with high social anxiety participants showing increased discounting. This study suggests that a modified version of the del

Reporting of social deprivation in musculoskeletal trials: An analysis of 402 randomised controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Social deprivation is broadly defined as the restriction of access an individual has to social or cultural interactions due to poverty, discrimination or other disadvantages. While social deprivation is a widely acknowledged determinant of outcome in musculoskeletal conditions, it remains unclear how this is considered in the conduct and interpretation of musculoskeletal trials. AIM: To determine the frequently to which measures of social deprivation are reported in trials recruiting people with musculoskeletal diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a Pubmed search of rand

Functional neural correlates of social approval in schizophrenia.

Social approval is a reward that uses abstract social reinforcers to guide interpersonal interactions. Few studies have specifically explored social reward processing and its related neural substrates in schizophrenia. Fifteen patients with schizophrenia and fifteen healthy controls participated in a two-part study to explore the functional neural correlates of social approval. In the first session, participants were led to believe their personality would be assessed based on their results from various questionnaires and an interview. Participants were then presented with the results of their

Chronic Social Defeat Stress Gives Rise to Social Avoidance Through Fear Learning.

Chronic social defeat stress (CSDS), a widely used rodent model of stress, reliably leads to decreased social interaction in stress susceptible animals. Here, we investigate a role for fear learning in this response using 129Sv/Ev mice, a strain that is more vulnerable to CSDS than the commonly used C57BL/6 strain. We first demonstrate that defeated 129Sv/Ev mice avoid a CD-1 mouse, but not a conspecific, indicating that motivation to socialize is intact in this strain. CD-1 avoidance is characterized by approach behavior that results in running in the opposite direction, activity that is cons

Social Anxiety Symptoms Predict Poorer Facial Emotion Recognition in Autistic Male Adolescents and Young Adults Without Intellectual Disability.

Utilizing a novel computerized task, we aimed to examine whether social anxiety symptoms would be related to individual differences in facial emotion recognition (FER) in a sample of autistic male adolescents and young adults without intellectual disability. Results indicated that social anxiety and IQ predicted poorer FER, irrespective of specific emotion type. When probing specific effects within emotion and condition types, social anxiety impacted surprise and disgust FER during a truncated viewing condition and not full viewing condition. Collectively, results suggest that social anxiety i

"Take the Rough With the Smooth": Modesty Modulates Neurocognitive and Emotional Processing of Social Feedback.

Self-enhancement motivates individuals to prefer positive or expected social feedback over negative or unexpected feedback, thereby eliciting corresponding emotional experiences. Emotion regulation strategies that aim to reduce negative experiences and enhance positive ones often face the dilemma of prioritizing one outcome at the expense of the other. Modest individuals, characterized by the low self-focus perspective, may demonstrate advantages in managing emotional experiences derived from self-relevant social feedback. In this study, participants with high and low levels of modesty were sc

The Effects of Reliable Social Feedback on Language Learning: Insights from Electroencephalography and Pupillometry.

Language learning is often a social process, and social feedback may play a motivational role. We examined the neurophysiological correlates of word learning with feedback varying in reliability (accuracy) and social content. In a forced-choice task, participants learned to associate novel auditory words with known objects and received feedback. There were three types of feedback: Social Reliable (always providing accurate feedback regarding performance), Social Unreliable (providing random feedback: 50% correct and 50% incorrect feedback irrespectively of the performance), and Symbolic Reliab

Impact of social frailty on the association between driving status and disability in older adults.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate whether the association between driving status and disability in older adults depends on social frailty. METHODS: This is a prospective study in a community setting. Participants were surveyed baseline conditions of social frailty and driving status (n = 4642, mean age: 71.7 years). Social frailty was defined according to criteria: going out less frequently, rarely visiting friends, feeling unhelpful to friends or family, living alone, and not talking with someone every day. Incident disability was prospectively followed up by their long-

The Locations of Palestine and the U.S. in the Global Map of Homelessness: Part 2.

It's now well appreciated that social determinants of health are the strongest predictors of our health and well-being. A good argument could be made that housing is at the top of the pyramid of these determinants. And, surprisingly, housing is also the social determinant that could rapidly turn on a dime-that is, with sufficient political will, creating access to housing could be radically expanded in short order. (Unfortunately, of course, it's true one can also become suddenly homeless, since few protections exist in policy or capitalist economies to prevent it). That alone sets it apart fr

Recent violence in a community-based sample of homeless and unstably housed women with high levels of psychiatric comorbidity.

OBJECTIVES: We determined associations between co-occurring psychiatric conditions and violence against homeless and unstably housed women. METHODS: Between 2008 and 2010, we interviewed homeless and unstably housed women recruited from community venues about violence, socioeconomic factors, and psychiatric conditions. We used multivariable logistic regression to determine independent correlates of violence. RESULTS: Among 291 women, 97% screened positive for 1 or more psychiatric conditions. Types of violence perpetrated by primary partners and persons who were not primary partners (non-pri

The relationship between the maladaptive self-beliefs characteristic of social anxiety and avoidance.

The Clark and Wells (1995) model of social phobia proposes that there are three types of maladaptive self-beliefs responsible for persistent social anxiety (high standard, conditional, and unconditional beliefs). Another prominent feature of social phobia is the avoidance of social-evaluative situations. To our knowledge, there have been no studies that have examined the relationship between these specific maladaptive self-belief types and avoidance. We hypothesised that while accounting for potential confounding variables (i.e., fear of negative evaluation and general symptomology), each of t

Loss of Bassoon in telencephalic excitatory neurons stabilizes non-aversive memories and strengthens aversive associations in social and non-social contexts.

Bassoon is a large presynaptic scaffold protein expressed at excitatory and inhibitory synapses, and mutations in BSN are linked to neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders. To investigate its role in telencephalic excitatory circuits, we generated a conditional mouse model (BsnNEXcKO) in which Bassoon is selectively deleted from glutamatergic neurons of the neocortex and limbic system while being preserved in neurogenic lineage and in a subset of granule cells of the dentate gyrus in adulthood. Learning and memory were assessed using aversive and non-aversive paradigms, including soc

Disability and quality of life in pure and comorbid social phobia--findings from a controlled study.

Social phobia is increasingly recognized as a prevalent and socially impairing mental disorder. However, little data is available regarding the general and disease-specific impairments and disabilities associated with social phobia. Furthermore, most studies have not controlled for the confounding effects of comorbid conditions. This study investigates: (a) the generic quality of life; (b) work productivity; and, (c) various other disorder-specific social impairments in current cases with pure (n = 65), comorbid (n = 51) and subthreshold (n = 34) DSM-IV social phobia as compared to controls wi

Compensatory deficits following rejection: the role of social anxiety in disrupting affiliative behavior.

BACKGROUND: Managing perceived or actual social rejection is an important facet of meeting basic needs for affiliation. Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by significant distress and debilitation relating to affiliation and recent work suggests higher levels of social anxiety symptoms may adversely affect responses to social rejection. This study examined emotional and behavioral responding to a social rejection stressor to explore whether social anxiety moderates the effects of social rejection on prosocial compensatory behaviors. METHODS: Individuals (N=37) evaluated on social a
