Abnormal visual representations associated with confusion of perceived facial expression in schizophrenia with social anxiety disorder.

Deficits in social functioning are especially severe amongst schizophrenia individuals with the prevalent comorbidity of social anxiety disorder (SZ&SAD). Yet, the mechanisms underlying the recognition of facial expression of emotions-a hallmark of social cognition-are practically unexplored in SZ&SAD. Here, we aim to reveal the visual representations SZ&SAD (n = 16) and controls (n = 14) rely on for facial expression recognition. We ran a total of 30,000 trials of a facial expression categorization task with Bubbles, a data-driven technique. Results showed that SZ&SAD's ability to categorize

Negative self-imagery blocks inferences.

Previous research has shown that, unlike non-anxious individuals, people with social phobia fail to generate non-threatening inferences when ambiguous social information is first encountered (i.e. 'on-line'; Hirsch and Mathews Journal of Abnormal Psychology, 109 (2000) 705-712). Patients with social phobia also report negative self-imagery in social situations, while individuals without high social anxiety do not. The negative self-imagery in social phobia may prevent the generation of non-threatening inferences. If so, then training non-anxious individuals to hold in mind a negative self-imag

The moderating role of sexual identity centrality in the association between gay community stress and social anxiety among sexual minority men.

Gay community stress has been linked to social anxiety among sexual minority men; however, the moderating role of identity-related processes (e.g., sexual identity centrality) has yet to be examined in this association. The present study investigated the association between gay community stress and two measures of social anxiety (i.e., self-reported social anxiety symptoms and interviewer-based diagnostic assessment of social anxiety disorder), as well as the moderating role of sexual identity centrality. Data come from the baseline assessment of a randomized controlled trial testing an LGBTQ-

Emotional responses in monkeys differ depending on the stimulus type, sex, and neonatal amygdala lesion status.

The amygdala plays an essential role in evaluating social information, threat detection, and learning fear associations. Yet, most of that knowledge comes from studies in adult humans and animals with a fully developed amygdala. Given the considerable protracted postnatal development of the amygdala, it is important to understand how early damage to this structure may impact the long-term development of behavior. The current study examined behavioral responses toward social, innate, or learned aversive stimuli among neonatal amygdala lesion (Neo-Aibo; males = 3, females = 3) or sham-operated c

The neurocognitive impact of loneliness and social networks on social adaptation.

Social adaptation arises from the interaction between the individual and the social environment. However, little empirical evidence exists regarding the relationship between social contact and social adaptation. We propose that loneliness and social networks are key factors explaining social adaptation. Sixty-four healthy subjects with no history of psychiatric conditions participated in this study. All participants completed self-report questionnaires about loneliness, social network, and social adaptation. On a separate day, subjects underwent a resting state fMRI recording session. A hierar

Social, Cognitive, and eHealth Mechanisms of COVID-19-Related Lockdown and Mandatory Quarantine That Potentially Affect the Mental Health of Pregnant Women in China: Cross-Sectional Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: Although lockdown and mandatory quarantine measures have played crucial roles in the sharp decrease of the number of newly confirmed/suspected COVID-19 cases, concerns have been raised over the threat that these measures pose to mental health, especially the mental health of vulnerable groups, including pregnant women. Few empirical studies have assessed whether and how these control measures may affect mental health, and no study has investigated the prevalence and impacts of the use of eHealth resources among pregnant women during the COVID-19 outbreak. OBJECTIVE: This study inv

Embryo manipulation and experimentation.

I have argued that early human embryos are not human beings, and do not have normal rights. Like human sperm and ova, they are both alive and biologically human. However, they lack the physiological development necessary to sustain a capacity for sentience. If Ford is right, then they are not yet individual human organisms. But the more important point is that their lack of a capacity for sentience makes them inappropriate candidates for the ascription of moral rights. Thus, research on human embryos produced in vitro is not a wrong against them--at least so long as experimentally manipulated

The Value of Social Determinants of Health Needs Assessments in Primary Care.

Social determinants of health (SDOH) such as income, housing, food security, education, transportation, and healthcare access, exert a far greater influence on health outcomes compared with traditional clinical care alone. This policy commentary argues for the routine integration of SDOH needs assessments into primary care to enable more comprehensive, equitable, and effective patient care. By screening for social drivers, providers can identify non-medical obstacles to treatment adherence, connect patients with community resources, and develop realistic care plans tailored to individual circu

Predicting social isolation among geriatric psychiatry patients.

BACKGROUND: This exploratory study examines factors associated with isolation from informal social ties among geriatric psychiatry inpatients. Specifically, it examines the associations of diagnoses, psychiatric history, and measures of current functioning with social isolation. METHODS: Analyses rely upon data derived from the Resident Assessment Instrument-Mental Health (RAI-MH), which is a patient focused, multidimensional, comprehensive assessment instrument designed to be a component of a larger, integrated health information system linking mental health with home care, long-term care, a

Self-management Among Elderly Patients With Hypertension and Its Association With Individual and Social Environmental Factors in China.

BACKGROUND: The hypertension control rate in China is much lower than that in developed countries. Self-management among elderly patients with hypertension can improve blood pressure control; thus, it is necessary to explore its association with individual and social environmental factors. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to investigate self-management among elderly patients with hypertension in China and its association with individual and social environmental factors based on the social ecological model. METHODS: A total of 301 elderly patients with hypertension were recruited to do a question

Parenting Interacts with Oxytocin Polymorphisms to Predict Adolescent Social Anxiety Symptom Development: A Novel Polygenic Approach.

Guided by a developmental psychopathology framework, research has increasingly focused on the interplay of genetics and environment as a predictor of different forms of psychopathology, including social anxiety. In these efforts, the polygenic nature of complex phenotypes such as social anxiety is increasingly recognized, but studies applying polygenic approaches are still scarce. In this study, we applied Principal Covariates Regression as a novel approach to creating polygenic components for the oxytocin system, which has recently been put forward as particularly relevant to social anxiety.

Factors influencing self-control in older patients with atrial fibrillation following radiofrequency catheter ablation: a cross-sectional study based on triadic reciprocal determinism.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) has become increasingly prevalent among the older Chinese population. Radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) represents an efficient procedure to reduce and minimize deleterious consequences in older patients with AF. However, self-control is often impaired in older patients, potentially affecting their recovery following surgical treatments-which can result in repeated episodes of both AF and hospital readmission. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate self-control among older patients with AF following RFCA procedures and identify the factors th

Sharing Antivaping Social Media Messages.

PURPOSE: Positive vaping portrayals and marketing from influencers receive billions of views on visual-based social media. Strategies are needed to counter these appeals and encourage sharing about health harms. METHODS: We recruited 712 US young adults (ages 18-25 years) through Cloud Research for our between-persons experiment. Participants were randomized to view four social media messages in one of the following three conditions: health harms, health harms with a social impact, or control. Participants first viewed and interacted with their condition messages on a simulated social media f

Chinese non-governmental organizations involved in HIV/AIDS prevention and control: Intra-organizational social capital as a new analytical perspective.

HIV/AIDS is a major public health and social problem worldwide, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have played an irreplaceable role in HIV/AIDS prevention and control. At the present time, however, NGOs have not fully participated in HIV/AIDS prevention and control in China. As an emerging focus on international academic inquiry, social capital can provide a new perspective from which to promote the growth of NGOs. The Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) recommends creating regional policies tailored to multiple and varying epidemics of HIV/AIDS. In order to provide evide

[Psychology of phobias in relation to dental anxiety].

In this article the most important etiologic factors related to dental anxiety are presented and form the basis for the exposition of a model for the psychologic development of dental anxiety. The model shows that personality factors related to emotion and cognition can influence the development of dental anxiety. In order for the anxiety to develop and become manifest it is also necessary that: 1: the individual experiences a given stimulus as presenting a physical threat, e.g. in the form of pain, 2: the individual has been exposed to an experience or a learning situation involving the stimu

Lack of neuropsychological deficits in generalized social phobia.

There are relatively few existing studies examining neuropsychological functioning in social phobia (SP), which collectively yield mixed results. Interpretation of results is further complicated by a number of methodological inconsistencies across studies, including the examination of neuropsychological domains in relative isolation from one another. The present study utilized a broader collection of neuropsychological tests to assess nine domains of functioning in 25 individuals diagnosed with generalized SP and 25 nonpsychiatric controls (NC). A mixed ANOVA revealed neither a significant gro
