The history of research in low- and middle-income countries is rife with practices that have extracted the time, energy, data, biological samples and, in many cases, the health and lives of those who participated, often justified by beliefs about their racial, cultural and civilisational inferiority. As global health research expanded in the late 20th century, this history raised substantial ethical concerns, including exploitation, double standards and the broader social, economic and political contexts in which international research occurs. Although research has contributed to reductions in

Urbanization is reshaping global health, with over 55% of the world's population residing in urban areas, a figure projected to reach 68% by 2050. This demographic shift presents significant challenges and opportunities for public health, as urban environments exacerbate health disparities rooted in social determinants of health, such as economic stability, education, neighborhood conditions, and access to healthcare. Rapid urban growth, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, has led to the emergence of inequitable living conditions, environmental hazards, and limited access to esse

BACKGROUND: Black women in the United States face disproportionate rates of hypertension and cardiovascular disease, driven by the compounding effects of structural inequity and socially embedded stress. Social networks are a critical and underutilized lever for health promotion in Black communities. Behavioral change interventions to improve cardiovascular health are frequently delivered in group formats. Yet, it is unclear to what extent these interventions deliberately apply social network theory or measure network-level mechanisms.
METHODS: We conducted a scoping review using a systematic

Introduction: Urinary and fecal incontinence, as well as the presence of an ostomy, are globally prevalent conditions with substantial implications for individuals' daily lives. Among the psychological consequences, social isolation is a frequently reported experience but remains poorly explored in the existing literature. The aim of this scoping review is to explore how social isolation has been conceptualized and operationalized in research on individuals with incontinence and to synthesize evidence on its antecedents and outcomes. Methods: This review was conducted in accordance with the Jo

BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety frequently accompany the motor manifestations of isolated adult-onset focal dystonias. Whether the body region affected when this type of dystonia first presents is associated with the severity of these neuropsychiatric symptoms is unknown.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine whether depression, anxiety and social anxiety vary by dystonia onset site and evaluate whether pain and dystonia severity account for any differences.
METHODS: Patients with isolated focal dystonia evaluated within 5 years from symptom onset, enrolled in the Natural His

Social isolation is a significant factor contributing to mental health issues among the older adults, particularly in societies experiencing rapid population aging. Notably, digital technology offers an effective means to address this issue. However, little is known that how access to internet affects the mental health of the older adults. Based on the China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (2018-2020) data, a national representative data, this study explored the impact of internet access on the older adults mental health by broadening their social network. Reduced social functioning in depression has been explained by different factors. Reduced social connectedness and prosocial motivation may contribute to interpersonal difficulties, particularly in chronic depression. In the present study, we tested whether social connectedness and prosocial motivation are reduced in chronic depression. Forty-seven patients with persistent depression and 49 healthy controls matched for age and gender completed the Inclusion of the Other in the Self Scale (IOS), the Compassionate Love Scale (CLS), the Beck Depression Inventory-II, and the Childhood Trauma Quest

UNLABELLED: Panic attacks occurring outside of Panic Disorder are not well-understood despite their inclusion as a diagnostic specifier in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM-5). This study compares panic attacks in the context of Panic Disorder compared to social anxiety in terms of their symptom frequency, severity, and clinical correlates.
METHOD: Participants (n=404) were interviewed using the Anxiety Disorders Interview Schedule (ADIS-IV-L; Brown et al., 1994), from which we analyzed interviewer ratings of panic attacks and panic attack symptoms, as well as ot

Identification of factors which influence health after a cardiovascular disease (CVD) event will assist with reducing the high health and economic burden of CVD. We undertook a systematic review to investigate the association between social health (lower social isolation, higher social support and lower loneliness) and health and well-being after a CVD event among people living in Australia and New Zealand. Four electronic databases were systematically searched until June 2020. Two reviewers undertook title/abstract screen. One reviewer undertook full-text screen and data extraction. A second

Few accounts exist of programmes in low- and middle-income countries seeking to strengthen community knowledge and skills in mental health. This case study uses a realist lens to explore how a mental health project in a context with few mental health services, strengthened community mental health competence by increasing community knowledge, creating safer social spaces and engaging partnerships for action. We used predominantly qualitative methods to explore relationships between context, interventions, mechanisms and outcomes in the "natural setting" of a community-based mental health projec

Child maltreatment is a major public and global health issue with well-documented intergenerational patterns. Social-emotional development, which is detrimentally impacted by child maltreatment, has been associated with parenting behaviors and implicated as a mechanism of intergenerational transmission of child maltreatment. This scoping review sought to synthesize information on the social-emotional skills that contribute to or protect against intergenerational maltreatment. Following the JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis systematic scoping review methodology, 23 studies were identified as ha

Bimodal bilingual (spoken and sign language) programming has been recommended to promote the language and social development of deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students as advances in auditory technologies and inclusion placements have opened up opportunities for access to spoken language (Mitchiner et al., 2012). The authors report preliminary findings of a small-scale, service-oriented bimodal bilingual (Macau Sign Language and spoken Cantonese) project at a deaf service center with four preschool deaf children who had underlying neurological conditions. This article reviews the German discourse on quality of life, quality assurance, and outcome measurement in services for persons with intellectual disabilities. Following institutional assumptions of path dependencies in organizational development, it is argued that concepts such as quality assurance must be understood in the context of the national support system development. For the Federal Republic of Germany, it can be noted that previous approaches to quality assurance of services based on measurement and evaluation tools have not been the drivers of innovation for inclusion. The driving

Age is the strongest risk factor for Alzheimer's disease, a neurodegenerative disease where beta-amyloid plaques accumulate in the brain. Elderly individuals, especially those in nursing homes, were burdened by social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this literature review is to describe the effectiveness of social engagement and how combating isolation can have a neuroprotective effect on individuals at risk for Alzheimer's disease. We conducted a search in PubMed examining articles from 2010 to 2023 that discussed the impact of socialization on Alzheimer's disease, part

BACKGROUND: Equitable healthcare access is a key aspect of health equity, yet migrants face substantial barriers. In Malaysia, migrant workers encounter structural and socio-economic barriers to healthcare. Acculturation and social support may influence healthcare utilisation, but their interrelated role remains unclear. This study examined associations between acculturation, social support, and healthcare utilisation among Indonesian migrant workers in Malaysia, and whether social support was indirectly associated with the relationship between acculturation and healthcare utilisation.
