Using structural equation modelling to characterise multilevel socioecological predictors and mediators of condom use among transgender women and cisgender men who have sex with men in the Philippines.

BACKGROUND: Risks for condomless sex among transgender women and cisgender men who have sex with men (trans-WSM and cis-MSM, respectively) in the Philippines, where HIV recently became a national public health crisis, are shaped and exacerbated by various risk factors across multiple levels. METHODS: Between June 2018 and August 2019, we conducted a cross-sectional online study with 318 trans-WSM and cis-MSM respondents from Manila and Cebu cities. Structural equational modelling procedures were performed to determine direct, indirect and overall effects between condom use and latent variable

Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Quality of Life, Anxiety, Connections to Friends, and Access to Resources Among People with HIV: Using the Social Ecological Model.

The purpose of this study was to understand the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and mitigation efforts on health and social outcomes for people with HIV at the individual, social, and structural levels of the Social Ecological Model. The International Nursing Network for HIV collected data for a cross-sectional survey of people with HIV in Botswana, Canada, Colombia, Hong Kong, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Thailand, and the United States from August 2021 through June 2023. Among 1,400 participants, 47.5% experienced decreased quality of life, 40.9% experienced incre

Sibling Relationships in Mixed-Status Immigrant Families: A Qualitative Interpretive Meta-Synthesis.

This study examined how legal status differences shape comparison, caregiving, emotional strain, and solidarity among siblings in mixed-status immigrant families. Siblings play a critical role in immigrant family life, yet research has largely focused on parent-child dynamics. In mixed-status households, siblings hold different legal statuses, creating unequal opportunities and responsibilities that shape their relationships. A qualitative interpretive meta-synthesis was conducted on 13 studies of US-connected mixed-status and transnational families, identified through systematic searches of f

Social preferences correlate with cortical thickness of the orbito-frontal cortex.

Humans differ in their preferences for personal rewards, fairness and others' welfare. Such social preferences predict trust, public goods provision and mutual gains bargaining and have been linked to neural activity in regions involved in reward computation, cognitive control and perspective-taking. Although shaped by culture, social preferences are relatively stable across time, raising the question whether differences in brain anatomy predict social preferences and their key components-concern for personal outcomes and concern for others' outcomes. Here, we examine this possibility by linki

Balancing acts: lateral hypothalamic circuits coordinating feeding, anxiety, and social interactions.

Survival requires organisms to continuously balance competing motivational drives, including the need to acquire energy, avoid threat, and navigate complex social environments. Feeding, anxiety-related behaviors, and social interactions are therefore tightly interconnected, yet the neural mechanisms that coordinate these domains remain incompletely understood. The lateral hypothalamus (LH) is uniquely positioned to integrate internal metabolic signals, external environmental cues, and socially relevant information, and to translate this integrated state into appropriate behavioral responses. Implications of Social and Material Deprivation for Changes in Health of Older People.

Objective: We use the panel structure of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) data for 14 countries to examine the implications of material and social deprivation for health deterioration in old age and mortality. Method: To minimize the potential endogeneity bias, we examine the relationship between deprivation and changes in health rather than levels of health. We include a substantial set of fixed "initial conditions," and extend the controls with health measures, as observed at the initial period. Results: The results of the probit regression suggest a strong and s

Semantic knowledge of social interactions is mediated by the hedonic evaluation system in the brain.

Attaching semantic meaning to sensory information received from both inside and outside our bodies is a fundamental function of the human brain. The theory of Controlled Semantic Cognition (CSC) proposes that the formation of semantic knowledge relies on connections between spatially distributed modality-specific spoke-nodes, and a modality-general hub in the anterior temporal lobes (ATLs). This theory can also be applied to social semantic knowledge, though certain domain-specific spoke-nodes may make a disproportionate contribution to the understanding of social concepts. The ATLs have stron

Why consider impaired social language usage in a case of corticobasal degeneration?

The purpose of this case study was to examine the integrity of cognitive skills, language usage, and language structure components in a patient with corticobasal degeneration (CBD). CBD is a levadopa-nonresponsive, degenerative neurologic movement disorder that is generally accompanied by cognitive (frontal executive dysfunction, dementia) and linguistic (aphasia) disorders. However, no one has reported on social language usage deficits in cases of CBD. The reported frontal executive dysfunction found in CBD led us to expect social language usage deficits in the present case study. Consistent

Personal and social resources in children of patients with bipolar affective disorder and children of normal control subjects.

The authors examined the personal resources (social problem-solving ability, internal locus of control, self-esteem, and self-perceived competence) and social resources (social network structure and support) in 23 children of patients with bipolar affective disorder (probands) and 33 children of normal control parents. Positive resource profiles were related to psychiatric well-being in the offspring. Nondisordered probands, in particular, demonstrated a strikingly positive profile of personal resources as well as a wide range of peer, sibling, and other kin supporters. Disordered probands had

Perceived role of age-friendly environments in improving social relationships: a qualitative exploration of older adults' perspectives in China.

OBJECTIVES: This paper explored (1) older adults' perceptions of age-friendly environments in China and (2) how participation in activities and services within these environments influenced their social relationships. METHOD: Twenty-nine semi-structured interviews were conducted with Chinese residents aged 55 and older, who had no history of brain structural changes or severe mental health conditions, and resided in their current community for at least one year. Data were analyzed using applied thematic analysis. RESULTS: Four themes were identified: (1) Age-friendly environments as supporti

From Self to Stranger: A Hierarchical Pattern of Subjective Value in Social Contexts.

Self-bias is well-documented in perception and memory, but the role of self in subjective value across social relationships remains underexplored. This study addresses this gap by examining how subjective value is shaped by social closeness. Study 1 established a clear hierarchical pattern: shapes associated with the self were valued most, followed by those linked to a friend, then a stranger. Study 2 replicated and extended this pattern through three sub-experiments, confirming its robustness when replacing "friend" with "mother," using real names, and employing more complex visual stimuli. Social anxiety in three Western societies.

The present study investigates whether empirical data support the notion that people in Western societies do not differ with regard to social anxiety. Social anxiety in Dutch students (N = 425) was compared with that experienced by students in the United States (N = 440) and Turkey (N = 349). Social anxiety was operationalized with the Inventory of Interpersonal Situations (IIS; Van Dam-Baggen & Kraaimaat, 1987, 1999, 2000), which measures two aspects of social anxiety, i.e., discomfort in social situations and frequency of social responses. The original Dutch version of the IIS (IOA) was tran

Endemic koloa maoli (Hawaiian Duck, Anas wyvilliana ) shows preferential social associations, but not based on plumage or genetic relatedness.

UNLABELLED: Island endemic birds are under greater threat than their mainland counterparts. Sedentary living and historically reduced predation may affect island bird sociality and inform their conservation and management. However, detailed studies on their sociality are uncommon. The federally- endangered koloa maoli ( Anas wyvilliana, Hawaiian duck, or koloa) is primarily threatened by hybridization with feral mallards and avian botulism outbreaks. We used capture-mark-recapture and genetic data on koloa on the island of Kaua'i, a stronghold of remaining koloa, to construct social networks a

Wounds that echo: community perceptions of the socio-structural determinants of community violence in post-apartheid South Africa in the context of COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic and its associated public health measures significantly altered the social, economic, and psychological landscape of communities worldwide. In South Africa, the post-COVID-19 period has been marked by a notable surge in homicide rates and interpersonal and community violence. Using a combined structural and social disorganisation framework, this qualitative study critically explores community members' perceptions of the socio-structural factors contributing to community violence, in the context of COVID-19. Utilising data from in-depth interviews and focus group discussio

Strategies of socially isolated older adults: Mechanisms of emergence and persistence.

Social isolation relates to a lack of social contacts and interactions with family members, friends or the wider community, and results in diminished health and well-being. And yet many interventions aimed at enhanced social participation are not effective because they do not match the needs of the socially isolated older adults themselves. Little is known about the experiences of socially isolated older adults and their need for help and support. In this paper, we use concepts from Giddens' structuration theory to understand the strategies they use to deal with social isolation in everyday li

Optimizing the social utility of judicial punishment: An evolutionary biology and neuroscience perspective.

Punishment as a response to impairment of individual or group welfare may be found not only among humans but also among a wide range of social animals. In some cases, acts of punishment serve to increase social cooperation among conspecifics. Such phenomena motivate the search for the biological foundations of punishment among humans. Of special interest are cases of pro-social punishment of individuals harming others. Behavioral studies have shown that in economic games people punish exploiters even at a cost to their own welfare. Additionally, neuroimaging studies have reported activity duri

Adult outcome of preterm birth: Implications for neurodevelopmental theories of psychosis.

Preterm birth is associated with an elevated risk of developmental and adult psychiatric disorders, including psychosis. In this review, we evaluate the implications of neurodevelopmental, cognitive, motor, and social sequelae of preterm birth for developing psychosis, with an emphasis on outcomes observed in adulthood. Abnormal brain development precipitated by early exposure to the extra-uterine environment, and exacerbated by neuroinflammation, neonatal brain injury, and genetic vulnerability, can result in alterations of brain structure and function persisting into adulthood. These alterat

Structure, developmental course, and correlates of children's anxiety disorder-related behavior in a Hellenic community sample.

The generality of the DSM-IV diagnostic structure for children's anxiety disorders, as measured by the Spence Children's Anxiety Scale (SCAS) was investigated with a Greek-language version of the scale. An exploratory factor analysis produced a six-factor solution in general accord with the DSM-IV-based theoretical structure of responding. However, a generalized anxiety factor incorporated three unexpected items interpreted as representing excessive worry, including two items intended to measure obsessions, raising the question of children's ability to discriminate the intrusiveness of vexatio
