Optimizing prenatal valproic acid exposure in zebra finches to model autism-related phenotypes.

RATIONALE: Rodent models dominate autism spectrum disorder (ASD) research, yet their translational validity is limited for a heterogeneous condition with complex social-vocal phenotypes. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata) - a highly social, vocal-learning songbird - as an ASD model by adapting embryonic valproic acid (VPA) exposure and identifying dose-timing conditions that preserve viability while perturbing social behavior. METHODS: We used a 3 × 3 design crossing VPA dose (0, 0.3, 0.6 µmol/egg) with manipulation day (incubation days 8-10). Hatching success, pos

Evaluation of the HOPE spiritual assessment model: a scoping review of international interest, applications and studies over 20+ years.

BACKGROUND: Evidence supports classifying spiritual health as a determinant of health and including spiritual care in comprehensive patient-centered care. Despite delineation of primary versus specialty palliative skills, including spiritual care, and availability of spiritual history/assessment communication tools designed for non-specialist (SH/SAs), medical teams continue to neglect patients' spiritual needs. A possible contributor is that consolidated evidence regarding uses and/or effectiveness of these SH/SA tools is lacking. AIM: To explore interest, applications and evaluations of one

A Mixed-Methods Approach to the Development of a Disaster Food Security Framework.

BACKGROUND: Limited research on food systems and food insecurity (FI) following disasters finds contextual differences in post-disaster food systems that shape dimensions of FI. Measurement limitations make it difficult to address FI and develop effective practices for disaster-affected communities. OBJECTIVE: To develop, validate, and test a Disaster Food Security Framework (DFSF). DESIGN: Mixed-methods approach was used, including in-depth interviews to understand lived experiences during disasters; expert panel input to validate DFSF designed using responses from in-depth interviews; and

Beliefs about sharing illness experiences: Development of a scale and relationship with symptoms of fibromyalgia.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the current research was to evaluate, in people with fibromyalgia, the extent to which beliefs about sharing illness experiences are associated with functioning and distress, and to explore the mediating role of illness behaviours. A new scale was designed to address this. DESIGN: The Beliefs about Sharing Illness Experiences (BASIE) scale was developed, and initial tests of reliability and validity were conducted. A cross-sectional design was used to determine relationships, including mediation analyses. METHODS: Individuals with fibromyalgia (n = 147) and a compariso

Participatory community action research in homeless shelters: Outcomes for shelter residents and service-learning research assistants.

The article reports empirical outcomes of an ongoing transdisciplinary participatory community action research project that implements behavioral activation in homeless shelters. The overall goal of this Project is twofold: (1) to improve psychosocial functioning of shelter residents and enhance their opportunities to overcome homelessness; and (2) to enhance civic development of service-learning students who assist in Project implementation. Two studies are reported, representing these goals. Study 1 found that residents of a men's shelter (n = 892), women's shelter (n = 433), and transitiona

Considerations for Use of Blood-Based Biomarkers in Epidemiologic Dementia Research.

Dementia represents a growing public health burden with large social, racial, and ethnic disparities. The etiology of dementia is poorly understood, and the lack of robust biomarkers in diverse, population-representative samples is a barrier to moving dementia research forward. Existing biomarkers and other measures of pathology-derived from neuropathology, neuroimaging, and cerebrospinal fluid samples-are commonly collected from predominantly White and highly educated samples drawn from academic medical centers in urban settings. Blood-based biomarkers are noninvasive and less expensive, offe

Physical violence in college women: Psychometric evaluation of the safe dates-physical violence victimization scale.

Researchers examined psychometric characteristics of the Safe Dates-Physical Violence Victimization scale in 97 Jordanian college women. Reliability coefficient and Principal Components Analysis were used. Construct validity was examined using independent samples t-test. Cronbach's alpha of 0.80 was yielded. Two dimensions (injury-causing tactics and threatening tactics) were identified. Using construct validity analysis, researchers indicated significant differences in the mean depression, anxiety, stress, and childhood victimization scores among women reporting physical violence, compared to

Measuring and managing appearance anxiety in patients with systemic sclerosis.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc, scleroderma) is a progressive, autoimmune, connective tissue disease of unknown etiology that can cause changes in appearance in socially important areas of the body (e.g. face and hands). Social concerns related to changes in appearance can contribute to anxiety specific to situations where one's appearance will be evaluated, or appearance anxiety. Appearance anxiety is a relevant but underexplored construct in SSc. Areas covered: We review the current knowledge on appearance anxiety in SSc, including assessment of the construct and interventions. Relevant references

Promoting Older Adults' Participation in Fall Prevention Activities.

Falls are a leading cause of injury and death among older adults, yet a persistent gap exists between available evidence-based prevention strategies and their real-world uptake. Social determinants of health shape fall risk as well as the accessibility and effectiveness of prevention interventions. Cohort evidence demonstrates that disparities in outcomes are intersectional and emerge at the community level, challenging current risk assessment tools and one-size-fits-all prevention approaches. Closing this gap requires further research, validated equity-informed assessment tools, and intervent

Shaping the Future: Recommendations from a Palliative Social Work Summit-A National Call to Action.

BACKGROUND: Palliative social workers play a critical role in serious illness care by addressing the biopsychosocial, spiritual, existential, and cultural needs of patients and families. Despite substantial professional infrastructure and contributions to equity and person-centered care, the profession faces persistent challenges related to recognition, funding, and visibility. These challenges are intensified by widening health inequities, policy threats to access to care, and national workforce shortages. METHODS: To assess the current landscape and advance a coordinated professional agenda

Addressing demand artifacts in psychological research (and beyond).

Demand artifacts stem from participants' beliefs about treatment effects and motivations to respond in accordance with these beliefs. These artifacts typically build on subtle cues that exert extraneous influences unbeknownst to researchers, through processes that are not part of their stated theory. Demand artifacts threaten the internal and external validity of studies, and they have been supported across a wide range of psychological domains (e.g., clinical, cognitive, and social psychology, psychology of perception) and beyond (e.g., consumer research, experimental economics, psychosomatic

Construction and Validation of the Gendered Ageism Scale (GAS).

Population aging and increasing longevity have radically transformed social dynamics. Older women experience "double discrimination" known as gendered ageism and linked to the intersection of age and gender. Despite the relevance of this construct, no measurement scale for it currently exists. The aim of the research was to construct and validate the Gendered Ageism Scale (GAS). In a first study (N = 410), an initial set of items was developed; factor analyses were conducted; reliability and convergent validity were analyzed. The second study (N = 602) tested the stability of the factor struct

Structural validity and internal consistency of the Strengths and Stressors in Parenting (SSF) Questionnaire in parents of children with developmental disabilities.

The current study investigated the structural validity and internal consistency of the Strengths and Stressors (SSF) questionnaire. The SSF is used in Swedish habilitation services to measure the positive and negative consequences that the fostering of a child with a developmental disability can have on family functioning in six domains: parent's feelings and attitudes, social life, family finances, relationship to the other parent, siblings, and professional support. The proposed six-factor model was tested with confirmatory factor analysis with data collected from 291 parents of children wit

Experimental Induction of Emotional and Sexual Intimacy: Exploring the Validity of the German Fast Friends Procedure in Individuals with and without Childhood Maltreatment.

The Fast Friends Procedure (FFP) is a widely used experimental paradigm to induce emotional intimacy. Besides exploring the validity of a German translation of the paradigm (n = 46), we developed an extension of the FFP that induces sexual intimacy and assessed heart rate, high-frequency heart rate variability, and electrodermal activity responses to the FFP and its extension. Furthermore, we examined its applicability to individuals with childhood maltreatment (n = 56), who frequently suffer from intimacy-related difficulties. Intimacy, positive affect, liking, and attraction increased during

GENDER-Q Youth Patient-Reported Outcome Measure: Protocol for an International Cross-Sectional Field Test Study.

BACKGROUND: The need for gender-affirming care (GAC) for young people has increased rapidly worldwide. GAC includes social, psychological, and medical interventions aimed at alleviating gender-related distress. Given that many outcomes of GAC relate to how young people function and feel, a rigorously developed patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) is needed. To address this need, GENDER-Q Youth was developed with extensive input from youth with lived experience. Concept elicitation interviews were performed with 47 youth from Canada and the United States. A conceptual framework and draft PRO

Stigma related to male-factor infertility in China: a scale development and validation study.

OBJECTIVES: Stigma is a prevalent and serious issue among infertile men, yet no culturally appropriate tools are available to assess their experiences in China. This study aimed to develop and validate the Male Infertility Stigma Scale (MISS) to measure stigma among Chinese men with male-factor infertility. METHODS: This study employed a sequential exploratory mixed-methods design. The scale was developed through literature review, semi-structured interviews with patients (n = 10) and healthcare professionals (n = 5), and two rounds of expert consultation (n = 9). Following pilot testing (n =

Development and content validation of a survey assessing domains of sexual and reproductive health in adults with spina bifida.

PurposeIndividuals with spina bifida (SB) often face substantial gaps in sexual and reproductive health (SRH) knowledge leading to low use of contraception, poor utilization of preventative sexual health care, unintended pregnancies, missed opportunities to pursue their SRH goals, and increased risk of abuse and coercion. Validated questionnaires are needed to reliably test and track the SRH and self-efficacy of adults with SB. This study aimed to develop a survey with content validity to assess five SRH domains in adults with SB.MethodsAn initial survey was informed by a targeted literature r

The Intuitive Eating Scale-3: Development and psychometric evaluation.

Intuitive eating has been found to protect against disordered eating and preserve well-being. Yet, there are methodological (length), conceptual (inconsideration of medical, value-based, and access-related reasons for food consumption), and psychometric (item wording) concerns with its most common measure, the Intuitive Eating Scale-2 (IES-2). To address these concerns, we developed the IES-3 and investigated its psychometric properties with U.S. community adults. Across three online studies, we evaluated the IES-3's factorial validity using exploratory factor analysis (EFA; Study 1; N = 957;

Development of a short form of the Cardiac Distress Inventory.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac distress may be viewed as a persistent negative emotional state that spans multiple psychosocial domains and challenges a patient's capacity to cope with living with their heart condition. The Cardiac Distress Inventory (CDI) is a disease-specific clinical assessment tool that captures the complexity of this distress. In busy settings such as primary care, cardiac rehabilitation, and counselling services, however, there is a need to administer briefer tools to aid in identification and screening. The aim of the present study was to develop a short, valid screening version o

Evaluation of Large Language Models as Tools, Models, and Partners in Creative Thinking Research: A Selective Narrative Review with the GCA Framework.

Creativity research faces three persistent bottlenecks: divergent-thinking scoring is labour-intensive, cognitive models of creativity remain underspecified, and laboratory tasks fall short of real-world creative achievement. Large language models (LLMs) offer potential solutions, but the field lacks a structured framework for evaluating them. This selective narrative review (January 2018-June 2026) applies the generation-capability-assessment (GCA) framework, whose three axes are operationalised through descriptive criteria with provisional heuristic thresholds. On the generation axis, LLMs e
