Geographic Differences Among Tetanus Cases-United States, 2009-2023.

BACKGROUND: Tetanus is a serious but rare noncommunicable disease, with the risk of tetanus exposure dependent on an individual's environmen … lance System tetanus case data combined with population estimates, rural-urban classifications, and social vulnerability indices. RESULTS: Jurisdiction-specific tetanus incidence ranged from 0 cases to 0.20 cases per 1 million person-years. Rural areas had higher tetanus incidence, even after accounting for social vulnerability indices. In crude analyses, increasing …

Challenges in the cross-sectoral collaboration on vulnerable pregnant women: a qualitative study among Danish general practitioners.

BACKGROUND: Vulnerable pregnant women, defined as women threatened by social, psychological, or physical risk factors, need special support during pregnancy to prevent complications in pregnancy, birth, and childhood. Proper cross-sectoral collaboration in antenatal care is paramount to delivering sufficient supportive care to these women. General practitioners (GPs) often face barriers when assessing vulnerable pregnant women and may; as a result, under-identify and underreport child abuse. Little is known about how the cross-sectoral collaboration in antenatal care affects the GP's opportuni

Establishing and Operating Welfare Shelters in the Aftermath of the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake: A Case Study of Adaptive Management for Vulnerable Populations.

OBJECTIVES: Disasters disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, necessitating specialized support through welfare shelters, which offer tailored care for those with special needs. Despite their importance, comprehensive reporting on welfare shelter operations during disasters remains limited. This study aimed to analyze the establishment and operation of a welfare shelter in Wajima City, Japan, following the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake, providing insights into operational processes. METHODS: The research presents a first-hand narrative account of a welfare shelter's operation over

Ethics in research with vulnerable human subjects: a review study.

Vulnerable individuals often do not have their rights guaranteed when they are recruited or not to researches. This review aims to analyze the knowledge produced in studies on ethics in research with vulnerable populations to contribute to greater protection and justice for this population. A search for articles in the PubMed and VHL databases was carried out using the mesh database terms "Ethics, research" AND "Vulnerable populations" over the past ten years. A total of 240 studies were found, of which 104 were duplicates. After reading the titles, abstracts and full texts, 33 articles were s

Silent suffering: The hidden challenges confronting unaccompanied refugee children through the eyes of social workers.

BACKGROUND: Unaccompanied refugee children are one of the most vulnerable categories within the refugee population. They face inexhaustible risks from the start of their journey until its conclusion; being exposed to various forms of violence, assault, and exploitation during the transit phase. OBJECTIVE: This study was aimed to discern the challenges faced by unaccompanied refugee children in Jordan, as perceived by social workers. Additionally, to uncover the role of the social work profession in helping these children in confronting and alleviating these challenges. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTI

Housing for vulnerable populations-identifying system cost implications: an analytic literature review.

We explored how investments in housing for vulnerable populations (including those experiencing homelessness) are described as leading to cost containment for the health, justice, and social service systems; the nature of any costs and benefits; and variations by housing type and over time. A structured search of peer-reviewed academic research focused on the core concepts of economic benefit, public housing programs, and vulnerable populations. Findings from 42 articles reporting on cost containment specific to health, justice, and social service systems at the municipal, regional, and/or sta

'She come like a sister to me': a qualitative study of volunteer social support for disadvantaged women in the transition to motherhood in England.

This qualitative study explores the ways in which disadvantaged women benefit from social support from a trained volunteer during pregnancy and the postnatal period, using the theoretical frameworks of stress and coping and a multi-dimensional model of social support. Forty-seven mothers took part in semi-structured interviews. The mothers, who had received social support through nine volunteer projects in England, faced many potentially stressful challenges besides having a baby (such as poverty, poor housing, histories of abuse, motherhood at a young age, living with physical or mental healt

Regional Socioeconomic Deprivation Predicts In-Hospital Burn Mortality in Texas-New Mexico Cohort: A Retrospective Analysis of Social Determinants of Health.

Social determinants of health (SDOH) have been shown to contribute to disparities in burn outcomes. This study leverages patient data from a regional burn center serving Texas and New Mexico to evaluate whether national indices of social vulnerability accurately predict in-hospital mortality among patients with burn injuries from underserved areas. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 1841 patients treated for burn injuries over a 5-year period (2019-2024). Sixteen ZIP code-level SDOH metrics including Social Vulnerability Index and socioeconomic status (SES) were quantified. Univariat…

Coping strategies in major depressed, agoraphobic and comorbid in-patients: a longitudinal study.

The first aim of this study was to explore the diagnostic specificity of coping styles by comparing ways of coping in non-anxious major depressed, non-depressed agoraphobic, and both major depressed and agoraphobic (comorbid) in-patients. The second aim was to investigate whether a vulnerability model, a state model, or a combined vulnerability-state model of coping accounted best for the data. On admission and when discharged, 95 patients completed the Way of Coping Checklist and were evaluated on several symptom scales. Self-report symptom scales were completed at one-year follow-up as well.

Aggression in Social Anxiety: Narcissistic Self-Centeredness as a Differentiator in Person-Centered and Variable-Centered Analyses.

Although social anxiety (SA) is typically conceptualized as an internalizing vulnerability, a subset of socially anxious individuals display heightened aggression. The present study examined whether vulnerable narcissism-particularly narcissistic self-centeredness-helps explain heterogeneity in the SA-aggression association. Chinese university students (N = 872) completed measures of SA (Social Interaction Anxiety Scale; Social Phobia Scale), vulnerable narcissism (Hypersensitive Narcissism Scale; self-centeredness and rejection sensitivity), and proactive/reactive aggression (Reactive-Proacti

Children with language disorders: natural history and academic success.

Children with developmental language disorders pose specific and unique problems for educators. This article addresses the continuing academic vulnerability of these children during the school years. We advance the position that their academic vulnerability results from the lifelong need to acquire language, to learn with language, and to apply language knowledge for academic learning and social development. Issues are addressed that relate to persistence of language deficits and learning in school.

[Loneliness as a health issue: a new challenge for healthcare systems and nursing].

. Loneliness as a health issue: a new challenge for healthcare systems and nursing. Loneliness has long been considered mainly a psychological or social condition. However, growing scientific evidence has identified loneliness as a major health determinant associated with poorer clinical outcomes, increased healthcare utilization, reduced quality of life, and higher mortality. Demographic ageing, weakening social networks, chronic diseases, socioeconomic vulnerability, and the impact of the covid-19 pandemic have contributed to making loneliness a widespread public health issue affecting all a

Association of Non-Medical Drivers of Health with Completion of Penicillin Allergy Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Social vulnerability has been shown to influence penicillin allergy delabeling rates; however, the influence of individual non-medical drivers of health (NMDoH) on penicillin allergy delabeling within protocolized frameworks is unclear. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the association between NMDoH and completion of penicillin allergy evaluation in a safety-net hospital system. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of patients with penicillin allergy labels referred for inpatient or outpatient evaluation within a protocolized pharmacist-driven program between March …

Designing a Territorial Composite Vulnerability Index to guide public health action in Cali, Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health are central to explaining health inequalities. In fragmented urban contexts such as Cali, Colombia, territorially focused public health action requires analytical tools to identify priority areas for intervention. OBJECTIVE: To design and apply a Territorial Composite Vulnerability Index for the city of Santiago de Cali to support the micro-planning of public health interventions. METHODS: We conducted an ecological, citywide study with a geospatial, multivariate approach. Seven indicators representing social determinants were selected: multidimensio

Adverse experience during early life and adulthood interact to elevate tph2 mRNA expression in serotonergic neurons within the dorsal raphe nucleus.

Anxiety disorders, depression and animal models of vulnerability to a depression-like syndrome have been associated with dysregulation of brain serotonergic systems. These effects could result from genetic influences, adverse early life experiences (ELE), or acute stressful life events, all of which can alter serotonergic neurotransmission and have been implicated in determining vulnerability to neuropsychiatric disorders. To evaluate the effects of ELE, adverse experiences during adulthood, and potential interactions between these factors on neuronal tryptophan hydroxylase 2 (tph2) mRNA expre

Do Geographic Barriers and Community Vulnerability Impact PrEP Use Among Transgender Latinas in the US South? Findings from the ChiCAS Study.

Transgender (trans) Latinas in the United States face disproportionately higher HIV rates and persistently low use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) despite awareness. While geographic access to PrEP has been identified as a barrier in other populations, little is known about how spatial access and community-level vulnerability shape PrEP use among trans Latinas in the US South. Using data from the randomized intervention-waitlist control trial of ChiCAS (N = 144), we examined (1) proximity to Spanish-language PrEP providers, (2) neighborhood vulnerability using the Social Vulnerability Index…
