Temporomandibular disorder modifies cortical response to tactile stimulation.

UNLABELLED: Individuals with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) suffer from persistent facial pain and exhibit abnormal sensitivity to tactile stimulation. To better understand the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying TMD, we investigated cortical correlates of this abnormal sensitivity to touch. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we recorded cortical responses evoked by low-frequency vibration of the index finger in subjects with TMD and in healthy controls (HC). Distinct subregions of contralateral primary somatosensory cortex (SI), secondary somatosensory cortex (SII), an…

Cortical and subcortical correlates of functional electrical stimulation of wrist extensor and flexor muscles revealed by fMRI.

The main scope of this study was to test the feasibility and reliability of FES in a MR-environment. Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) … analysis revealed an activation pattern comprising the contralateral primary motor cortex, primary somatosensory cortex and premotor cortex; the ipsilateral cerebellum; bilateral secondary somatosensory cortex, the supplementary motor area and anterior cingulate cortex. Within the same subjects we observed a consistent replication of the activation pattern shown in o …

All had a unilateral circumscribed and ope … that large fiber bundles in the frontal centrum semiovale and large cortical fields in the primary somatosensory cortex, middle and superior frontal gyrus, were involved in the transmission, decoding and detection of a single impulse. Default mode network activity and neuropsychological profile in male children and adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and conduct disorder.

It is known that patients with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and Conduct disorder (CD) commonly shows greater symptom severity than those with ADHD alone and worse outcomes. This study researches whether Default mode network (DMN) is altered in adolescents with ADHD + CD, relative to ADHD alone and controls or not. Ten medication-naïve boys with ADHD + CD, ten medication-naïve boys with ADHD and 10-age-matched typically developing (TD) controls underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans in the resting state and neuropsychological tasks such as the Wiscon

Somatosensory evoked magnetic fields after mechanical stimulation of the scalp in humans.

Somatosensory evoked magnetic fields after mechanical stimulation by air-pressure-induced tapping which was applied to the forehead and occiput were examined in normal human subjects. The equivalent current dipole (ECD) of the initial magnetic field, 1M, was identified in the primary somatosensory cortex (SI) in the hemisphere contralateral to the stimulation. The ECD of the subsequent magnetic fields, 2M, was identified in bilateral second sensory cortices (SII). The ECD position of 1M in SI generated after the scalp stimulation was closely inferior to the hand area of the SI, which was consi…

Cortical response of the projected-thumb tactile sensation under TENS by MEG.

The existence of projected finger territories (PFTs) near the stump provides an essential way to realize the tactile sensation of lost fingers by transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS). After amputation, the somatosensory cortex corresponding to lost fingers might be invaded by other cortical areas due to cortical plasticity. However, it was seldom observed how the amputees could feel the projected or lost finger tactile sensation in the cerebral cortex under TENS. To answer this question, by using magnetoencephalography (MEG), we investigated the cortical response under TENS of th…

Modulatory effects of transcranial direct current stimulation on sensory gating in Fibromyalgia Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Several studies have demonstrated a reduced habituation to redundant somatosensory stimulation (sensory gating) in Fibromyalgia Syndrome. Furthermore, anodal transcranial direct current stimulation has been shown to modulate somatosensory processing. The aim of this study was to examine the modulatory effects of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation applied over the left primary somatosensory cortex on sensory gating in Fibromyalgia Syndrome. METHODS: Thirty-nine female Fibromyalgia Syndrome patients (43-71 years, mean 55.56 ± 7.85) participated in the study and were ra…

Altered somatosensory processing in trigeminal neuralgia.

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a pain state characterized by intermittent unilateral pain attacks in one or several facial areas innervated by the trigeminal nerve. The somatosensory cortex is heavily involved in the perception of sensory features of pain, but it is also the primary target for thalamic input of nonpainful somatosensory information. Thus, pain and somatosensory processing are accomplished in overlapping cortical structures raising the question whether pain states are associated with alteration of somatosensory function itself. To test this hypothesis, we used functional magnetic …

Motor and somatosensory conduction in cervical myelopathy and radiculopathy.

STUDY DESIGN: Motor and sensory conduction times were measured in patients with cervical myelopathy and radiculopathy. The results were compared with those of control subjects. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical value of the combined use of motor-evoked potentials with F wave recording and somatosensory-evoked potentials in cervical myelopathy and radiculopathy. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Electromyography and somatosensory-evoked potentials provide only indirect information on the motor pathways. The development of magnetic transcranial stimulation has provided a direct and reliable physio

Prenatal alcohol exposure reduces the size of the forelimb representation in motor cortex in rat: an intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) mapping study.

Children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) often exhibit sensorimotor dysfunctions that include deficits in motor coordination and fine motor control. Although the underlying causes for these motor abnormalities are unknown, they likely involve interactions between sensory and motor systems. Rodent animal models have been used to study the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) on skilled reaching and on the development and organization of somatosensory barrel field cortex. To this end, PAE delayed the development of somatosensory cortex, reduced the size of whisker and forelimb …

Impact of transcranial direct current stimulation on structural plasticity of the somatosensory system.

While there is a growing body of evidence regarding the behavioral and neurofunctional changes in response to the longitudinal delivery of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), there is limited evidence regarding its structural effects. Therefore, the present study was intended to investigate the effect of repeatedly applied anodal tDCS over the primary somatosensory cortex on the gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM) compartment of the brain. Structural tDCS effects were, moreover, related to effects evidenced by functional imaging and behavioral assessment. tDCS was applied over t…

Self-organisation in the human visual system--visuo-motor processing with congenitally abnormal V1 input.

Due to an abnormal projection of the temporal retina the albinotic primary visual cortex receives substantial input from the ipsilateral visual field. To test whether representation abnormalities are also evident in higher tier visual, and in motor and somatosensory cortices, brain activity was measured with fMRI in 14 subjects with albinism performing a visuo-motor task. During central fixation, a blue or red target embedded in a distractor array was presented for 250 ms in the left or right visual hemifield. After a delay, the subjects were prompted to indicate with left or right thumb butto
