BACKGROUND: Treatment with high-dose cisdiammine-dichloroplatinum (II) (cisplatin, cDDP) often is associated with late complications, predominated by peripheral neuropathy. Pt deposition in different tissues may play a key role in the induction of many of these effects. Main topics of interest include the relationship between cDDP doses given during treatment and the long-term pharmacokinetics of the drug complexes in normal tissues and blood. Noninvasive examination of Pt in tissues during and after cDDP treatment are needed to clarify these points.

The potential use of graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GF-AAS) for the organic mercury determination in marine biological tissues was evaluated. In a population of high level athletes (kayakists) we compared quantitative electroencephalography data in those with low erythrocyte (magnesium magnesium deficit) and those with normal magnesium (controls). Logistic regression showed that the relative power of the alpha frequency band in the occipital lead is the most discriminant (P < 0.05). There was a significant positive correlation between low erythrocyte magnesium and alpha relative power (P < 0.05). An alteration of magnesium homeostasis could explain the occurrence of magnesium deficiency in athletes.

A previous observation of increased aqueous magnesium in eyes with senile cataract has been re-examined in a totally different material. The serum and aqueous level of calcium and magnesium from 34 patients with senile cataract were tested against comparable values from 4 patients with choroidal melanoma. In contrast to calcium, the magnesium aqueous/serum ratio was significantly higher in the cataract group. Possible explanations are suggested.

Excavated and contemporary bones (rib cortexes) of a mature age (40-60 yr) were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrometry for the concentration of seven elements, including Ca, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Pb, with a view to historically evaluating the chemical composition of the bones. Fifty-two well-preserved specimens, obtained from western Japan, were classified into six groups according to Japanese prehistoric and historic eras (Jomon, Yayoi, Kofun, Muromachi, Edo, and Contemporary). Average concentrations of Ca were 0.20-0.33 g/g in the excavated bones and 0.17 g/g in the contemporary bones.

Total calcium content of both human and porcine MHS skeletal muscle is significantly less than normal. This data is consistent with the concept that some organelle (probably the sarcoplasmic reticulum, the mitochondrion or even the sarcolemma) within the MHS muscle stores less than normal amounts of calcium. The large variability between muscle specimens rules out measurement of total calcium content of skeletal muscle as a routine diagnostic test for malignant hyperthermia susceptibility.
