Evaluation of Facial Artery Musculomucosal Flap for Reconstruction of Small Tongue Defects.

BACKGROUND: Partial glossectomy defects can be managed by different methods, ranging from primary closure to pedicled or free flaps. The facial artery musculomucosal (FAMM) flap provides an excellent match to lingual tissue and provides an inconspicuous donor site. This study aims to compare functional outcomes, especially speech, of patients with partial glossectomy defects (≤1/3rd of tongue) reconstructed by FAMM flap with those of similar defects closed primarily or healed by secondary intention. It also offers to resolve the question of whether defects of this size should be reconstructed

Cochlear implantation in children with Waardenburg syndrome.

Waardenburg syndrome is an autosomal-dominant trait resulting from mutations occurring in different genes. It is often characterized by varying degrees of: congenital hearing loss; dystopia canthorum; synophrys; broad nasal root; depigmentation of hair (white forelock), skin or both; and heterochromic or hypochromic irides. A retrospective case study was done to assess speech perception, speech production, general intelligence and educational setting in six profoundly hearing-impaired children with Waardenburg syndrome (four with type I, one with type II and one with type III) ranging in age f

Can You Understand Your Child? Reliability and Validity of a Parent Questionnaire: The Intelligibility in Context Scale: Italian.

INTRODUCTION: The Intelligibility in Context Scale (ICS) is a parent-report scale by which parents can rate their child's functional speech intelligibility according to seven different communicative partners. Translations, linguistic adaptations, and psychometric and norming data for ICS have been achieved in different languages. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the psychometric properties of the Italian version of the ICS (ICS-I) in terms of internal consistency, test-retest reliability, criterion validity (correlation with speech measures), and construct validity, and to investigate potential differe

An Internet-based telerehabilitation system for the assessment of motor speech disorders: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: This pilot study explored the feasibility and effectiveness of an Internet-based telerehabilitation application for the assessment of motor speech disorders in adults with acquired neurological impairment. METHOD: Using a counterbalanced, repeated measures research design, 2 speech-language pathologists assessed 19 speakers with dysarthria on a battery of perceptual assessments. The assessments included a 19-item version of the Frenchay Dysarthria Assessment (FDA; P. Enderby, 1983), the Assessment of Intelligibility of Dysarthric Speech (K. M. Yorkston & D. R. Beukelman, 1981), perce

Speech disturbances in patients with dystonia or chorea due to neurometabolic disorders.

Speech disturbances are frequent and potentially disabling in patients with dystonia or chorea due to neurometabolic disorders (DCND), but their precise characteristics are poorly documented. We prospectively studied 29 consecutive patients with DCND. A detailed description of their speech patterns was obtained by using the Frenchay dysarthria assessment test and the apraxia of speech evaluation test of Wertz. Gross motor function and intelligibility were each scored on 5-point scales to identify a possible correlation between the severity of the speech and motor disorders. All the patients we

The Islanded Nasolabial Flap: A Versatile and Reliable Flap for Reconstruction in Cancers of the Oral Cavity.

On the Indian subcontinent, oral cancer represents a significant health burden. Local flaps offer a viable alternative to free flaps in specific reconstructive scenarios where free flaps may not be feasible. The islanded nasolabial flap, based on the facial artery, proves to be a robust and versatile option for single-stage reconstructions of oral cavity defects. In this study, we share our experience employing the islanded nasolabial flap at a high-volume cancer center in Central India for reconstructing buccal mucosa and tongue defects. This prospective observational study focused on approxi

[Articulatory evaluation after mesopharyngeal reconstruction with the radial forearm flap].

Soft palate and tonsil (mesopharynx) play an important role on articulation and swallowing. We must take care not to restrict these physiological function when we reconstruct the mesopharyngeal defect after cancer ablation. In order not to restrict the postoperative function of mesopharynx, we take it the more important to preserve the function of the residual tissue rather than to rebuild the lost function. We took notice of pliable nature of the radial forearm flap and tried to reconstruct mesopharyngeal defect in five cases with this flap. We analyzed articulatory function and velopharyngea

A comparison of surgical and prosthetic treatment for speech disorders attributable to surgically acquired soft palate defects.

Surgical and prosthetic treatments for speech disorders attributable to surgically acquired soft palate defects were investigated. Ten patients who had undergone soft palate resection for extensive cancer served as the subjects. In four patients, the resected portion of the soft palate was confined to the anterior or middle segments, with an intact posterior band, whereas in the remaining six patients the resected portion extended into the posterior edge. An obturator with or without a speech appliance was adapted to all patients in the former group and to one patient in the latter group. The

Effects of hearing acuity on psychophysiological responses to effortful speech perception.

In recent studies, psychophysiological measures have been used as markers of listening effort, but there is limited research on the effect of hearing loss on such measures. The aim of the current study was to investigate the effect of hearing acuity on physiological responses and subjective measures acquired during different levels of listening demand, and to investigate the relationship between these measures. A total of 125 participants (37 males and 88 females, age range 37-72 years, pure-tone average hearing thresholds at the best ear between -5.0 to 68.8 dB HL and asymmetry between ears b

Design and Preliminary Evaluation of Electrolarynx With F0 Control Based on Capacitive Touch Technology.

An electrolarynx (EL) is one of the most popular voice rehabilitation technologies used after laryngectomy. However, most ELs generate monotonic EL speech, which has been shown to create a particular deficit in speech intelligibility, especially for Chinese Mandarin (Mandarin). Mandarin is a tonal language that makes lexical distinctions using variations in tone. Our purpose is to design an EL that can produce the four Mandarin tones, and to evaluate its performance. We designed a fundamental frequency (F0) control method for Mandarin EL speech and manufactured a touch-controlled electrolarynx

The Validity, Reliability, and Accuracy of the European French Version of the Intelligibility in Context Scale.

PURPOSE: The Intelligibility in Context Scale (ICS) is a free parent report questionnaire assessing functional intelligibility. Although it has been translated into French, it lacks validation. This study addresses two main objectives. First, we aimed to establish the psychometric properties of the European French version of the ICS (ICS-EF). Second, we explored the ICS-EF as a measure of the functional impact of speech sound disorders (SSDs), specifically investigating how communication partner familiarity influences intelligibility ratings. METHOD: A total of 189 French-speaking preschool c

Extended high frequency hearing influences cortical response amplitudes to speech.

Since young adults hear sounds up to 20 kHz, the loss of extended high-frequency hearing (EHF; above 8 kHz) is a hallmark of age-related hearing loss, often progressing from early lifetime. However, this deficit frequently goes undetected because routine clinical hearing tests and most hearing aids are currently mostly limited to 8 kHz. EHF hearing has been linked to deficits in speech perception in noise and to self-reported hearing. However, it remains elusive how EHF hearing influences speech intelligibility. Here we recorded neuromagnetic brain responses using magnetoencephalography (MEG)

Investigation of the multi-component ergonomics intervention effects on improving musculoskeletal outcomes and speech communication: A case study in open-plan offices.

BACKGROUND: Office workers are at high risk of developing musculoskeletal symptoms (MSS) due to improper workstations. Open-plan bank office employees must communicate with bank clerks properly and perform financial activity precisely, but noise is a factor that disrupts their communication. Therefore, MSS and annoying noise are two of the main problems in open-plan offices. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the effects of a multi-component intervention involving individual (employee ergonomics training) and physical (improvements in workstation design and work environment) ergonomic factors on

Speech outcomes of early palatal repair with or without intravelar veloplasty in children with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate.

We compared the early speech outcomes of 40 consecutive children with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) who had been treated according to different 2-stage protocols: the Malek protocol (soft palate closure without intravelar veloplasty at 3 months; lip and hard palate repair at 6 months) (n=20), and the Talmant protocol (cheilorhinoplasty and soft palate repair with intravelar veloplasty at 6 months; hard palate closure at 18 months) (n=20). We compared the speech assessments obtained at a mean (SD) age of 3.3 (0.35) years after treatment by the same surgeon. The main outcome me
