INTRODUCTION: Spontaneous splenic rupture is an atraumatic event that represents a rare and life-threatening acute complication in which the spleen is damaged producing internal hemorrhage in the abdominal cavity. Its association with hematologic malignancies, although a rare occurrence, has been previously described. Among this subset of patients, chronic myeloid leukemia is one of the main causes.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 26-year-old male with history of chronic myeloid leukemia presented with acute intense abdominal right lower quadrant pain. Computed tomography showed a wedge in the lower …

We report a 7-year-old boy with Menkes disease complicated by rupture of a large splenic artery aneurysm. The aneurysm was successfully embolized with microcoils and n-butyl cyanoacrylate. Further angiographic evaluation revealed marked tortuosity of mesenteric and lower extremity vasculature, including the femoral arteries bilaterally, without aneurysm formation. The patient has since been evaluated annually with computed tomography angiography and there have been no additional vascular complications of his disease during 3-year follow up.

Splenic rupture in neonates is a rare event, usually occurring in the setting of underlying predisposing conditions. Here, we present the case of a term neonate who presented with worsening anemia in the setting of known hemolytic disease during the newborn period and was later found to have a spontaneous splenic rupture. He was subsequently diagnosed with severe hemophilia A, and was managed medically with recombinant factor VIII replacement therapy without any surgical intervention. This is the first reported case of a neonate who had spontaneous splenic rupture and severe hemophilia A, and …

Traumatic aortic rupture is rupture of all or part of the aortic wall, mostly resulting from blunt trauma to the chest. The most common site of rupture is the aortic isthmus. Traumatic rupture of the ascending aorta is rare. A 62-year-old man with a family history of ascending aortic aneurysm was referred to our hospital after a motor vehicle accident. He had symptoms of cardiogenic shock. A contrast-enhanced computed tomographic scan revealed rupture of the proximal ascending aorta and an ascending aortic aneurysm with a diameter of 55 mm at the level of the sinuses of Valsalva. Transthoracic

Splenic abscesses are increasingly being identified, possibly due to widespread use of imaging modalities in clinical practice. The commonest clinical features are high grade fever and exclusively localised left upper quadrant abdominal pain. These symptoms are similar to most infectious diseases prevalent in the tropics, making imaging by ultrasonography or computer tomography a necessity in the diagnosis. There are reports from different geographic areas on splenic abscesses associated with typhoid fever. We reported ruptured splenic abscess presenting with peritonitis as a rare and grave co

A 26-year-old male presented with fever for five days and abdominal pain for 24 hours. System examination identified a soft abdomen with diffuse tenderness. CT-abdomen findings were consistent with splenic rupture with intra and peri-splenic hematoma. Laboratory investigations showed a platelet count of 40,000 per mm(3). In due course he developed hypotension and underwent splenectomy. Non-structural protein 1 (NS1) dengue antigen was positive in the admission sample and IgM dengue antibodies were detected in the follow-up sample. Histopathology of the spleen showed normal architecture with no…

The treatment of retroperitoneal hemorrhage can be by surgical or a conservative approach but the main problems about these cases are difficulty in diagnosis due to negative results after abdominal lavage and the difficulties in accessing the retroperitoneal area surgically. Retroperitoneal hemorrhage during pregnancy, occurring as a result of spontaneous rupture, is very rare event. Such cases require urgent operation and if not, result in high mortality. A twenty-eight year old pregnant woman was admitted to the hospital dead after collapsing at home during a religious ritual. No systemic or

This study reports 3 new cases of spontaneous (or atraumatic) splenic rupture of the spleen, including two with massive hemoperitoneum and one with a secondary rupture of splenic infarct, and reviews the literature about this rare disease. These spontaneous ruptures are rare and potentially fatal. They result from infectious diseases (mainly mononucleosis and and paludism) and hematological diseases (mainly malignant hemopathies) in more than 50% of cases. Mortality is close to 20%, and includes some deaths occurring before diagnosis was established and postoperatives deaths, which can result …

A 13-year-old haemophilia A patient presented with pain in the abdomen, 4 days after a blunt abdominal trauma. The computed tomography scan of the abdomen showed a large splenic haematoma. The patient was initially managed with factor VIII replacement therapy, but 4 weeks later he had a delayed rupture of the splenic haematoma with haemoperitoneum and shock. An elective splenectomy under factor VIII therapy was successfully performed.

We describe a case of spontaneous splenic rupture occurred in a patient with acute lymphoblastic leukemia of Burkitt type before starting cytotoxic chemotherapy. Left hypochondrial pain radiating to the homolateral shoulder was the only clinical symptom. Emergency computed tomography showed splenic laceration and hemoperitoneum. The patient underwent immediate laparatomy with splenectomy and experienced an uneventful postoperative recovery. Eight days after surgery, chemotherapy could be administered and complete remission was achieved. Although spontaneous rupture of the spleen is rare in leu…

Spontaneous splenic rupture as a complication of infectious mononucleosis was diagnosed in a 19-year-old woman. Sonographic and MRI investigations revealed subcapsular hematoma of the spleen without overt rupture. The patient was managed conservatively. Somatostatin treatment was initiated in order to reduce splanchnic blood flow. Further clinical course of the patient was favourable. Seven days after the diagnosis of splenic rupture the patient was discharged from hospital. Non-operative management should be considered in patients with subcapsular splenic rupture to avoid complications of spl…

The authors report a case of massive intestinal hemorrhage caused by rupture of a splenic artery pseudoaneurysm into a pseudocystojejunostomy. The pathologic and clinical features of this unusual complication of pancreatitis are discussed. One hundred and seventy one cases of major bleeding associated with pseudocysts and/or pseudoaneurysms have been reported in the literature during the period 1989-May 1991. Acute and chronic pancreatitis may be the underlying etiologies and the overall mortality rate of this complication is 35.1%. According to the authors experience, angiographic localizatio

The authors present a case with peritonitis following rupture of a splenic abscess in a female aged 18 years. Peritonitis developed in three stages. The diagnosis before surgery was of pelvic peritonitis. Bacteriologic examination revealed the presence of B. colli. Splenectomy was followed by complete recovery of the patient. The site of the primary infection could not be determined. The authors stress the usefulness of exploration of the splenic lodge in the so-called "primary" generalized peritonitis, in pelvic peritonitis or in all cases when the origin of the peritoneal infection is not kn

OBJECTIVE: Atraumatic splenic rupture (ASR), though rare, is an adverse event linked to direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs). Given their widespread use and potentially fatal consequences if undiagnosed, heightened clinical awareness of DOAC-associated ASR is crucial. Our aim was to analyze the occurrence and clinical characteristics of ASR induced by DOACs.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of all reported DOAC-associated ASR cases through 15 April 2025, without language restrictions.
RESULTS: A total of 27 patients (11 males and 16 females) were included with a median age of 64 …

INTRODUCTION: Atraumatic Splenic Rupture (ASR) is a very rare and potentially life-threatening event associated with Epstein Barr Virus (EBV)-induced mononucleosis; it occurs in <0.5% of overall cases. The aim of the present study was to publish a case report of the ASR and to present a mini review of the international literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 22-year-old female presented to emergency department with abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. The patient's medical history was unremarkable, and she denied trauma. On arrival, her vital signs were stable. However, laboratory examinations showe…

Spontaneous splenic rupture is a rare, life-threatening condition that occurs without trauma, often presenting diagnostic challenges due to nonspecific symptoms. The risk of spontaneous splenic rupture increases significantly with underlying pathological conditions, including Plasmodium vivax malaria, where rapid splenic enlargement and altered red blood cell surface characteristics likely contribute to the increased risk of rupture. Here, we describe the case of a 23-year-old male patient who presented with severe abdominal pain and hypotension. Examination revealed jaundice, left upper abdom…
