Infection of the central nervous system produced by R1 vesicular stomatitis virus.

Previous studies of vesicular stomatitis virus infection of the central nervous system in mice have demonstrated that both temperature-sensitive mutants and defective interfering particles produce alterations from wild type disease. To examine further the role of the biologic properties of the virus, we studied the disease produced by R1-vesicular stomatitis virus, a temperature-insensitive revertant derived from the temperature-sensitive T1026 mutant. Whereas wild type produced acute encephalitis and death in 2 to 3 days in BALB/c mice, R1 produced, in contrast, a paralytic disease 5 to 6 day…

Premonitory stages of recurrent aphthous stomatitis. I. Histological and enzyme histochemical investigations.

Biopsy specimens were repeatedly excised from 10 patients with minor and major recurrent aphthous ulcers (RAS). All lesions represented premonitory stages of RAS. The histological and enzyme histochemical investigations were indicative of an early degeneration of individual, suprabasal epithelial cells. The metabolically negative, vacuolated cells were surrounded by cells with normal enzyme activity. No inflammatory reactions were recorded in the connective tissue at this stage. At more advanced stages of the disease the distribution of vacuolated cells within the oral epithelium increased and

Severe erosive stomatitis and giant lymph node hyperplasia of retroperitoneum (Castleman's tumor).

A severe, extensive, erosive stomatitis developed in a 33-year-old Japanese man who had had intraperitoneal giant lymph node hyperplasia (Castleman's tumor) of the hyaline-vascular type. Histologically, there was a dense lymphoid cell infiltration in the dermis with invasion of the mucosal epithelium. It was hypothesized that an autoaggressive attack of lymphoid cells against the epithelium of the oral mucosa played a role in the pathogenesis of this erosive stomatitis and it was suggested that there might be a correlation between the occurrence of stomatitis and the presence of Castleman's tu…

Herbivory-Induced Stomatal Opening Triggers the Dispersal of an Invasive Insect Herbivore.

Stomata play important roles in plant responses to phytopathogens, but less is known about their roles in plant-herbivore interactions. Herbivore damage commonly closes stomata but also elicits the release of herbivory-induced plant volatiles, important mediators of plant-herbivore interactions. Here, we examined the responses in tomato plants attacked by the invasive tomato leafminer (Phthorimaea absoluta), the larvae of which performed better on infested plants, while ovipositing adults were repelled by larvae-infested plants, which were distinct from those induced by two other tomato pests,

Stomatal cytokinesis defective2-dependent endocytic vesicular trafficking of abscisic acid.

Abscisic acid (ABA), a stressful phytohormone, is transported and signaled by clathrin-mediated endocytosis (CME) and clathrin-coated vesicles (CCVs). However, whether ABA promotes its cellular intake by CME and CCVs remains unknown. Here, this issue is first clarified by CME-mediated exogenous biotinylated ABA (bioABA) to localize in CCVs using three fluorescent macromolecules. BioABA has the physiological activity of ABA and may simulate the typical physiological effects of ABA during Arabidopsis seed germination and root growth. A binding analysis confirmed that both ABA and bioABA could sp

Management of tropical urban parks informed by divergent stomatal regulation of trees.

As climate change intensifies urban environmental challenges, cities increasingly rely on urban green spaces as climate adaptation infrastructure. Urban trees provide critical ecosystem services through root water uptake and leaf water loss, yet how their stomata respond to atmospheric drivers in tropical urban environments remains poorly understood. This research examines how ten dominant tree species in Chulalongkorn University Centenary Park, Bangkok regulate stomatal conductance (gs) in response to vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) across wet and dr

Stomatal density and aperture dynamics regulate drought response and yield in tomato.

In crops, key physiological traits such as transpiration, stomatal conductance, and photosynthesis are closely linked to productivity. However, these dynamic traits are often studied under steady-state conditions or modeled with limited data, failing to capture the plant's versatile responses to dynamic field conditions. We hypothesized that natural variation in stomatal morphological traits, specifically, abaxial-to-adaxial distribution and density regulate the temporal physiological response patterns in tomato introgression lines (ILs; crosses between WT, S. Pennellii, and M82 lines). We fur

Coordinated stomatal, mesophyll, and biochemical functions in photosynthetic responses to heat and dryness.

The intrinsic link between temperature and leaf-to-air vapor pressure difference (Δe) complicates isolation of their individual effects on photosynthesis. Consequently, how CO2 diffusion changes under heat and high evaporative demand, particularly through mesophyll conductance (gm) responses, remains poorly understood. The conditions under which biochemical colimitation occurs, meaning Rubisco carboxylation and RuBP regeneration capacities match, are also unclear. To advance understanding of plant responses to climate change, we separated temperature and Δe effects by holding Δe at 1 and 2 kPa

Thioredoxin system modulates metabolic and stomatal responses to elevated CO2 in Arabidopsis.

The NADPH-dependent thioredoxin reductase/thioredoxin (NTR/TRX) system plays a central role in maintaining redox homeostasis of the cell by transferring electrons from NADPH to target proteins though NTR and TRX, thereby modulating cysteine redox states and regulating enzyme activity. However, the specific contribution of the extraplastidial NTR/TRX system to plant acclimation to elevated CO2 (eCO2) remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated the physiological and metabolic responses of Arabidopsis mutants deficient in mitochondrial TRXo1 (trxo1) or in the cytosolic/mitochondrial/nuclear

Lineage-specific response to melatonin in stomatal regulation across vascular plants.

Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is a conserved indoleamine that regulates diverse physiological processes, including stomatal movement in angiosperms. However, whether this regulation is conserved across different plant lineages remains uncertain. Here, we examined the stomatal responses to exogenous melatonin in 17 representative plant species: seven angiosperms, two gymnosperms, seven ferns, and one lycophyte. In seed plants, melatonin induced dose-dependent stomatal closure, accompanied by the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), nitric oxide (NO), and cytosolic Ca2+; thi

Arabidopsis XPD functions upstream of CDKA;1 to regulate stomatal development.

In eukaryotes, XERODERMA PIGMENTOSUM GROUP D (XPD) is an integral subunit of the DNA repair/transcription complex TFIIH. In animals, XPD has been implicated in TFIIH-independent complexes regulating cell division, which, however, remains poorly understood in plants. Here, we identified XPD as a novel regulator of stomatal development in Arabidopsis. Its loss-of-function mutants exhibited increased stomatal precursor cells and formed stomatal clusters. Genetic analysis showed that XPD functions upstream of SPEECHLESS (SPCH) to control stomatal lineage entry, coordinates with MUTE to regulate me

Thermal regulation shapes the coordination of stomatal conductance, transpiration, and photosynthesis in rice.

Heat-stress driven by global warming alters rice (Oryza sativa) water-use dynamics. To assess adaptive water-use strategies under elevated air temperature, we conducted a three-year whole-season experiment in natural light climate chambers with ambient, +1 °C, +2 °C, and +5 °C warming treatments. Stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration rate (E), net photosynthetic rate (An) and leaf developmental dynamics were continuously measured across growth stages. Above the photosynthetic optimum leaf temperature (Tleaf-opt-An = 30.8 °C), An declined while gs increased. The increase in gs accelerated be

Metagenomic analysis of the denture-associated oral microbiome in patients with denture stomatitis.

Denture stomatitis (DS) is an inflammatory condition that affect denture wearers and is characterized by erythema of the mucosa opposing the denture. DS is often associated with oral microbiome dysbiosis. We used shotgun metagenomics to investigate the association between the denture-associated oral microbiome (DAOM) and DS in older adults living in long-term care facilities. We included participants with DS (n = 28) and age-and sex-matched removable denture wearers without signs of DS (n = 28). Clinical oral examinations were performed, and demographic and medical data were obtained from medi…

Future heatwave conditions inhibit CO2-induced stomatal closure in wheat.

As global temperatures and the severity of droughts continue to increase, food crops will more frequently experience high vapour pressure deficit (VPD) during heatwave events. However, the interactive effects of rising atmospheric CO2 and high-VPD heatwaves on crop water fluxes and yields are currently unknown. We investigate stomatal, photosynthetic and productivity changes in wheat during simulated future high-VPD heatwaves, under ambient (450 ppm) or elevated (720 ppm) CO2 concentrations, across four N-fertiliser treatments. We measured the physiological response of abaxial and adaxial leaf

Evolutionary trade-off between stomatal defense and gas exchange in Brassicaceae.

Stomatal opening is crucial for gas exchange, but it unavoidably offers invasion by pathogens. In response, plants close stomata to prevent pathogen entry, while the bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 (Pto) produces coronatine (COR), a jasmonate (JA) mimic, to counteract this plant response. Here, we demonstrate that by COR, Pto exploits CYP707A1 activation in Arabidopsis thaliana, encoding an enzyme that degrades abscisic acid, essential for stomatal closure. Notably, COR-induction of CYP707A1 is absent in other Brassicaceae species, such as Capsella rubella and Eutrema
