We investigated the characteristics and mRNA expression of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) in the adult female monkey submandibular gland using Western blot analysis and the reverse-transcriptase PCR (RT-PCR) technique, and observed HGF mRNA localization using the in situ RT-PCR technique. The possible role of submandibular glands (SMG) in the development of obesity was studied in two types of genetically obese mice, ob/ob and yellow Ay: Obesity is caused by hyperplasia followed by hypertrophy in ob/ob mice and mainly by hypertrophy in Ay mice. The effects of zinc deficiency were studied in mice submandibular salivary glands (SMG). Zn-restricted mice (Zn-) were maintained from weaning until adult age (60 days) with a powdered diet containing 3 mg Zn2+/kg. Pair-fed animals (30 mg Zn2+/kg powdered diet) and control animals fed a regular pelleted diet were also used. Surgical texts do not clearly advise whether the ramus mandibularis should be identified in excision of the submandibular salivary gland for benign disease.
