BACKGROUND: Baltic amber teething necklaces have been popularized as a safe and natural alternative to conventional or pharmacological medicines for the management of teething pain. However, claims made by retailers regarding the efficacy and mechanism of action of these necklaces lack scientific or clinical basis. The claim most closely resembling science is the assertion that succinic acid will leach out of the beads and through the skin of the wearer and carry out anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. The objective of the current research is to scientifically assess this claim.

PURPOSE: We describe the use of 99mtechnetium (Tc) dimercapto-succinic acid (DMSA) renal scintigraphy to document poorly functioning and/or ectopic renal units associated with occult ectopic ureters.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: During the last 8 years 6 toilet-trained girls were referred for lifelong continuous urinary dribbling. Initial radiological evaluation included renal and bladder sonography in 6, excretory urography in 4, a mercaptoacetyltriglycine-3 renal scan in 1 and cystovaginoscopy in 2. Ultimately a 99mTc-DMSA renal scan was performed in all 6 girls before surgical intervention.

The effects of impulse noise (firecrackers at 170 dB SPL, 1, 10, 20 rounds) on auditory cortical response threshold (CRT) and activity of succinic dehydrogenase (SDH) and acetylcholinesterase (AchE) in the inner ear were studied in 37 guinea pigs.
