Dissimilatory reduction of sulfate and zero-valent sulfur at low pH and its significance for bioremediation and metal recovery.

Redox transformations of sulfur, involving dissimilatory and assimilatory oxidation and reduction reactions, occurs in water bodies and terrestrial environments worldwide, leading to dynamic cycling of this element throughout the biosphere. In cases where zero-valent (elemental) sulfur, sulfate and other oxidized forms are used as electron acceptor in (primarily) anaerobic microbial metabolisms, the end product is hydrogen sulfide (HS- or H2S, dependent on pH). While neutrophilic and alkalophilic sulfidogenic prokaryotes have been known for many decades, acid-tolerant and acidophilic strains a

Characterization and cytotoxicity assessment of cadmium sulfide quantum dots synthesized with Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici.

The potential of CdS quantum dots for biomedical and bioimaging applications depends on their cytotoxicity, which can be modulated by coating molecules. Using sulfur as a precursor can be used along with cadmium nitrate to synthesize CdS quantum dots with the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici. The latter replaces pure chemical sulfur as a precursor for CdS quantum dot synthesis, thus transforming waste into a value-added product, increasing sustainability, reducing the environmental impact of the process through the implementation of green synthesis techniques, and contributing to t

Metabolism of sulfur compounds in homocystinurias.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Homocystinurias are rare genetic defects characterized by altered fluxes of sulfur compounds including homocysteine and cysteine. We explored whether the severely perturbed sulfur amino acid metabolism in patients with homocystinurias affects the metabolism of hydrogen sulfide. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: We studied 10 treated patients with a block in the conversion of homocysteine to cysteine due to cystathionine β-synthase deficiency (CBSD) and six treated patients with remethylation defects (RMD) and an enhanced flux of sulfur metabolites via transsulfuration. Control gr

Modulating the aroma and taste profile of soybean using novel strains for fermentation.

A key factor influencing consumer acceptance of soybean products is the aroma and taste profile, which can be modulated through fermentation using unique microbial strains. This study aimed to identify and characterize novel microbial strains with the potential to enhance flavour profiles including umami, while reducing undesirable flavour notes such as beany aromas. The results showed an 800% (8-fold) increase in free amino acids in samples fermented with Rhizopus oryzae, which correlated with an increase in umami intensity as measured using an E-tongue. Samples fermented with Neurospora cras

Atmospheric evolution of sulfur emissions from Kı̅lauea: real-time measurements of oxidation, dilution, and neutralization within a volcanic plume.

The high atmospheric concentrations of toxic gases, particulate matter, and acids in the areas immediately surrounding volcanoes can have negative impacts on human and ecological health. To better understand the atmospheric fate of volcanogenic emissions in the near field (in the first few hours after emission), we have carried out real-time measurements of key chemical components of the volcanic plume from Kı̅lauea on the Island of Hawai'i. Measurements were made at two locations, one ∼ 3 km north-northeast of the vent and the other 31 km to the southwest, with sampling at each site spanning

Chalcogen bonding in the solid-state structures of 1,3-bis(benzimidazoliumyl)benzene-based chalcogen-bonding donors.

1,3-Bis(benzimidazoliumyl)benzene-based chalcogen-bonding catalysts were previously successfully applied in different benchmark reactions. In one of those examples, i.e. the activation of quinolines, sulfur- and selenium-based chalcogen-bonding catalysts showed comparable properties, which is unexpected, as the selenium-containing catalysts should show superior catalytic properties due to the increased polarizability of selenium compared to sulfur. Herein, we present four crystal structures of the respective 1,3-bis(benzimidazoliumyl)benzene-based chalcogen-bonding catalyst containing sulfur (

Micro-nano bubble-assisted fasting improves the meat quality of Pelodiscus sinensis by modulating gut microbiota and metabolic profiles.

This study investigated the effects of micro-nano bubble (MNB)-assisted fasting on the meat quality of Chinese soft-shelled turtle (Pelodiscus sinensis). Compared to conventional fasting, MNB treatment significantly improved muscle elasticity and enhanced umami intensity by retaining higher levels of glutamic and aspartic acids. GC-IMS and electronic nose analyses confirmed that MNBs effectively reduced off-flavors (e.g., dimethyl sulfide, hexanal) while preserving polyunsaturated fatty acids (EPA, DHA). Integrated metabolomics and microbiome analyses revealed that MNBs remodeled the gut micro

Asymmetric Photoaerobic Lactonization and Aza-Wacker Cyclization of Alkenes Enabled by Ternary Selenium-Sulfur Multicatalysis.

An adaptable, sulfur-accelerated photoaerobic selenium-π-acid ternary catalyst system for the enantioselective allylic redox functionalization of simple, nondirecting alkenes is reported. In contrast to related photoredox catalytic methods, which largely depend on olefinic substrates with heteroatomic directing groups to unfold high degrees of stereoinduction, the current protocol relies on chiral, spirocyclic selenium-π-acids that covalently bind to the alkene moiety. The performance of this ternary catalytic method is demonstrated in the asymmetric, photoaerobic lactonization and cycloaminat

[Advances in study of physiologic effects of endogenous sulfur dioxide and its derivatives].

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is an ordinary air pollutant globally and harm to human health. L-cysteine is the major sulfur-containing amino acid and its normal metabolism can produce hydrogen sulfur (H2S) and SO2. It is realized that H2S has various bioactivities and is the third gasotransmitter after nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO). Recently, attention has been paid to the physiologic effects of endogenous SO2 and its derivatives (bisulfite and sulfite) in vivo, and recognized that SO2 and its derivatives can lower blood pressure, change heart rates, participate in inflammatory reactions,

Noble-metal-free electrocatalysts with enhanced ORR performance by task-specific functionalization of carbon using ionic liquid precursor systems.

The synthesis and characterization of functionalized carbon using variable doping profiles are presented. The hybrids were obtained from nitrile-functionalized ionic precursors and a ferric chloride mediator. This way, novel nitrogen doped and nitrogen-sulfur, nitrogen-phosphorus, and nitrogen-boron codoped carbon hybrids with a morphology containing microporous nanometer-sized particles were obtained. As-prepared heteroatom doped carbons exhibited superior electrocatalytic activity toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline and acid electrolytes. In particular, both the heteroatom

Sulfur dioxide oxidation induced mechanistic branching and particle formation during the ozonolysis of β-pinene and 2-butene.

Recent studies have suggested that the reaction of stabilised Criegee Intermediates (CIs) with sulfur dioxide (SO(2)), leading to the formation of a carbonyl compound and sulfur trioxide, is a relevant atmospheric source of sulfuric acid. Here, the significance of this pathway has been examined by studying the formation of gas phase products and aerosol during the ozonolysis of β-pinene and 2-butene in the presence of SO(2) in the pressure range of 10 to 1000 mbar. For β-pinene at atmospheric pressure, the addition of SO(2) suppresses the formation of the secondary ozonide and leads to highly

A mercury-catalyzed, high-yield system for the oxidation of methane to methanol.

A homogeneous system for the selective, catalytic oxidation of methane to methanol via methyl bisulfate is reported. The net reaction catalyzed by mercuric ions, Hg(II), is the oxidation of methane by concentrated sulfuric acid to produce methyl bisulfate, water, and sulfur dioxide. The reaction is efficient. At a methane conversion of 50 percent, 85 percent selectivity to methyl bisulfate ( approximately 43 percent yield; the major side product is carbon dioxide) was achieved at a molar productivity of 10(-7) mole per cubic centimeter per second and Hg(II) turnover frequency of 10(-3) per sec

Diverse Sulfuriferula spp. from sulfide mineral weathering environments oxidize ferrous iron and reduced inorganic sulfur compounds.

UNLABELLED: Microorganisms are important catalysts for the oxidation of reduced inorganic sulfur compounds. One environmentally important source of reduced sulfur is metal sulfide minerals that occur in economic mineral deposits and mine waste. Previous research found that Sulfuriferula spp. were abundant and active in long-term weathering experiments with simulated waste rock and tailings from the Duluth Complex, Northern Minnesota. We, therefore, isolated several strains of Sulfuriferula spp. from these long-term experiments and characterized their metabolic and genomic properties to provide

Interaction of tRNAs and of phosphorothioate-substituted nucleic acids with an organomercurial. Probing the chemical environment of thiolated residues by affinity electrophoresis.

The interactions of 4-thiouridine and 5-[(methylamino)methyl]-2-thiouridine in tRNA and of phosphorothioate esters in nucleic acids with an organomercurial have been investigated. For this purpose, an affinity electrophoretic system has been developed in which the mercury derivative has been covalently immobilized in a standard polyacrylamide gel. The retardation of thiolated macromolecules was found to be sensitive to the chemical environment of the sulfur atom, giving characteristic interaction constants dependent on the nature of the modification and its accessibility to binding. The intera

Spin-Polarized Chiral ZnIn2S4 for Targeted Solar-Driven CO2 Reduction to Acetic Acid.

Acetic acid represents a pivotal target for CO2 reduction due to its dual function as a carbon-utilization product and industrial feedstock. However, photocatalytic CO2 reduction (PCCR) to acetic acid typically suffers from low acetic acid yields and selectivity, constrained by competing reactions from ethanol and inefficient C-C coupling. Herein, we report a chiral mesostructured ZnIn2S4 (CMZI) photocatalyst that achieves a remarkable acetic acid yield of 962 µmol g-1 h-1 with a high selectivity of 97.3%. This performance stems from synergistic chirality-induced spin polarization and sulfur s

Synthesis of α-C-Stereochemically Pure Secondary Sulfonamides.

A convenient "green" stereoretentive approach to sp3-enriched secondary sulfonamides bearing an asymmetric center at the α position to the sulfur atom is described. The method relies on the electrophilic amination of the corresponding stereochemically pure sulfinates with N-alkylhydroxylamine sulfonic acids (in turn easily prepared from N-alkylhydroxylamine and HSO3Cl). It is shown that the efficiency of the approach is governed mainly by steric factors; its tolerance to several functional groups (e.g., ether, phthalimide, or N-Boc carbamate) is also demonstrated.

Evaluation of different approaches for modeling effects of acid rain on soils in China.

Acid deposition is an environmental problem of increasing concern in China. Acidic soils are common in the southern part of the country and soil acidification caused by acid deposition is expected to occur. Here we test and apply two different approaches for modeling effects of acid deposition and compare results with observed data from sites throughout southern China. The dynamic model MAGIC indicates that, during the last few decades, soil acidification rates have increased considerably due to acid deposition. This acidification will continue if sulfur deposition is not reduced, and if reduc

Effect of surface treatments on the shear bond strength of PAEK polymers to composite resin: an in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: Polyaryletherketone (PAEK) polymers, including polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and polyetherketoneketone (PEKK), are increasingly used in prosthodontics because of their favorable mechanical and biological properties. However, their chemically inert and low-surface-energy characteristics result in insufficient bonding to veneering composite resins. Therefore, effective and clinically safe surface treatment protocols are required to enhance adhesion. METHODS: Square specimens were fabricated from three Computer Aided Design/ Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) PAEK polymers: unfille

New methodology for removing carbonyl compounds from sweet wines.

Sweet white wines from botrytized grapes present high SO2 levels because of their high sulfur dioxide binding power. The objective of this work was to develop a new method for reducing this binding power by partially eliminating the carbonyl compounds naturally present in these wines that are responsible for this phenomenon. A selective liquid-solid removal technique was developed. Phenylsulfonylhydrazine was selected as the best candidate for removing carbonyl compounds. Its reactivity in the presence or absence of sulfur dioxide was verified in model media containing acetaldehyde, pyruvic ac
