Armored Regenerable Cilia.

Flexible cilia of natural species are well-known for their capabilities to transport objects by their collective motions. Therefore, well-ordered, flexible, and stimuli-responsive artificial cilia have been developed to render similar functionalities. However, flexibility and stimuli-responsiveness of a microcilium are inherently incompatible with durability/robustness against mechanical damage, limiting the artificial cilia to applications with only gentle operating conditions. The critical (but long neglected in surface engineering) property of natural hairs is that they are rooted under the

Dynamic Properties of Mixed Layers of a Lipid with a Protein or Its Fibrils.

Investigation of a spread monolayer of dipalmitoylphosphatidyl glycerol (DPPG), a simplified model of biocell membranes, on the surface of solutions of macromolecules of different surface activity can provide additional information on the processes in cell membranes and, on the other hand, can help in the development of biocompatible materials. In this work, the interactions of β-lactoglobulin (BLG) and its fibrils with a lipid monolayer on the surface of an aqueous solution or a fibril dispersion were studied. The surface layer structure and the ability of macromolecules to penetrate a lipid

Release of nanoparticle coatings additives from common surfaces via simulated dermal contact.

Both nanoparticles (NPs) and nano-enabled products have become widely available in consumer markets in the last decade. Surface coating including paints, stains, and sealants, have seen large increases in the inclusion of nanomaterials in their formulations to increase UV resistance, hydrophobicity, and scratch resistance. Currently, most literature studying the release of NPs and byproducts from coated surfaces has focused exclusively on lumber. In this study, well characterized CeO2 NPs were dispersed in either Milli-Q water, or a commercial paint primer and applied to several test surfaces

A Three-Dimensional Surface-Adaptive Stretchable Sensor for Online Monitoring of Composite Materials Curing.

Recently, rigid sensors have been commonly applied to online monitoring of the core curing processes of composite materials to prevent both overcuring and under-curing. However, conventional rigid sensors are prone to causing cracks and bubbles in composite materials during the curing process, thereby affecting both the mechanical performance and the overall reliability of the materials. Herein, stretchable interdigital dielectric sensors with flexible substrates and electrodes are designed to conform to complex 3D surfaces, thus enabling embedded nondestructive monitoring of composite curing

Unconventional fermi surface instabilities in the kagome Hubbard model.

We investigate the competing Fermi surface instabilities in the kagome tight-binding model. Specifically, we consider on-site and short-range Hubbard interactions in the vicinity of van Hove filling of the dispersive kagome bands where the fermiology promotes the joint effect of enlarged density of states and nesting. The sublattice interference mechanism devised by Kiesel and Thomale [Phys. Rev. B 86, 121105 (2012)] allows us to explain the intricate interplay between ferromagnetic fluctuations and other ordering tendencies. On the basis of the functional renormalization group used to obtain

The New General Biological Property of Stem-like Tumor Cells (Part II: Surface Molecules, Which Belongs to Distinctive Groups with Particular Functions, Form a Unique Pattern Characteristic of a Certain Type of Tumor Stem-like Cells).

An ability of poorly differentiated cells of different genesis, including tumor stem-like cells (TSCs), to internalize extracellular double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) fragments was revealed in our studies. Using the models of Krebs-2 murine ascites carcinoma and EBV-induced human B-cell lymphoma culture, we demonstrated that dsDNA internalization into the cell consists of several mechanistically distinct phases. The primary contact with cell membrane factors is determined by electrostatic interactions. Firm contacts with cell envelope proteins are then formed, followed by internalization into the ce

Cooperative effects of natural acetylenic acetogenins fromPorcelia macrocarpaon lipid packing and mechanical stability of Langmuir monolayers as protozoan membrane models.

This study investigates the synergistic interfacial behavior of two natural bioactive acetylenic acetogenins, (2S,3R,4R)-3 hydroxy-4-methyl-2-(n-eicos-11'-yn-19'-enyl)butanolide (1) and (2S,3R,4R)-3-hydroxy-4 methyl-2-(n-eicos-11'-ynyl)butanolide (2), obtained from Brazilian plant Porcelia macrocarpa (Annonaceae) and their interactions with membrane models using Langmuir films. Previous biological studies demonstrated that mixtures of 1 and 2 exhibit enhanced antiparasitic activity compared to the isolated compounds, although the physicochemical basis for this synergism remained unclear. Patterning on Living Tardigrades.

Micro/nanofabrication techniques have revolutionized modern photonics and electronics. However, conventional methods remain incompatible with living organisms due to inherent constraints including nonconformal coating, radiation damage, and toxic solvent requirements. Here, we present ice lithography for direct fabrication of micro/nanoscale patterns on the surfaces of tardigrades in their cryptobiotic state. Remarkably, upon rehydration the tardigrades revive, retaining the patterns on their surfaces. By precisely controlling parameters such as ice thickness, beam energy, and substrate proper

The effect of synthetic grass sports surfaces on the thermal environment: A systematic review.

There are concerns regarding high surface temperatures on synthetic grass sports surfaces influencing the surrounding thermal environment, potentially increasing heat stress and impacting athlete safety. As such, studies have investigated changes to the thermal environment surrounding synthetic grass surfaces in comparison to both natural grass, and synthetic surfaces with different features, but this body of research has not been systematically reviewed. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to (i) determine if there are differences in the thermal environment surrounding synthetic grass sur

Macrophage-like Cells Are Responsive to Titania Nanotube Intertube Spacing-An In Vitro Study.

With the introduction of a new interdisciplinary field, osteoimmunology, today, it is well acknowledged that biomaterial-induced inflammation is modulated by immune cells, primarily macrophages, and can be controlled by nanotopographical cues. Recent studies have investigated the effect of surface properties in modulating the immune reaction, and literature data indicate that various surface cues can dictate both the immune response and bone tissue repair. In this context, the purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of titanium dioxide nanotube (TNT) interspacing on the res…

Adhesion of Microdroplets on Water-Repellent Surfaces toward the Prevention of Surface Fouling and Pathogen Spreading by Respiratory Droplets.

Biofouling caused by the adhesion of respiratory microdroplets generated in sneezing and coughing plays an important role in the spread of many infectious diseases. Although water-repellent surfaces are widely used for the long-term repellency of aqueous solutions, their repellency to pathogen-containing microdroplets is elusive. In this work, microdroplets from picoliter to nanoliter were successfully generated in a controlled manner to mimic the exhaled microdroplets in sneezing and coughing, which allowed us to evaluate the adhesion of microdroplets on both superhydrophobic and lubricant-in

Gliding Direction of Mycoplasma mobile.

UNLABELLED: Mycoplasma mobile glides in the direction of its cell pole by a unique mechanism in which hundreds of legs, each protruding from its own gliding unit, catch, pull, and release sialylated oligosaccharides fixed on a solid surface. In this study, we found that 77% of cells glided to the left with a change in direction of 8.4° ± 17.6° μm(-1) displacement. The cell body did not roll around the cell axis, and elongated, thinner cells also glided while tracing a curved trajectory to the left. Under viscous conditions, the range of deviation of the gliding direction decreased. In the pres

Graphene-coated surface plasmon resonance interfaces for studying the interactions between bacteria and surfaces.

A variety of physical and chemical parameters are of importance for adhesion of bacteria to surfaces. In the colonization of mammalian organisms for example, bacterial fimbriae and their adhesins not only seek particular glycan sequences exposed on diverse epithelial linings, they also enable the bacteria to overcome electrostatic repulsion exerted by their selected surfaces. In this work, we present a new technique based on simplified model systems for studying the adhesion strength of different Escherichia coli strains. For this purpose, gold-based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) interfaces

Synthesis and properties of N-hexadecyl ethylenediamine triacetic acid.

A new kind of surfactant named N-hexadecyl ethylenediamine triacetic acid (HED3A) was synthesized from anhydrous ethylenediamine, 1-bromohexadecane, and chloroacetic acid. Testing showed stability of HED3A in hard water, wetting power, dispersing power, and surface tension increased along with pH value. Stability in hard water of trisodium N-hexadecyl ethylenediamine triacetate (3NaHED3A) was at level 4, which was better than that of sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) and sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (LAS). Other properties of 3NaHED3A including wetting power, dispersing power, emulsifying power,

Optimization of the immunorecognition layer towards Brucella sp. on gold surface for SPR platform.

A successful immunosensor is characterized by a proper antibody immobilization and orientation in order to enhance the antigen recognition. In this work, a thorough characterization of the antibody functionalized gold surface is performed to set up the best conditions to implement in an optical platform for the detection of Brucella sp. Two different strategies are evaluated, based on a random immobilization and on an oriented one: a direct antibody immobilization on carboxylic mixed polyethylene (PEG) self-assembled monolayer (SAM) or only carboxylic PEG SAM interface is compared to an orient

Plasmon-Triggered Hot-Spot Excitation on SERS Substrates for Bacterial Inactivation and in Situ Monitoring.

Bacterial sensing and inactivating is one of the key steps to prevent bacterial propagation and transfer. Here, using Ag nanoparticle-grafted tungsten oxide films (WO3/Ag), we developed a multifunctional platform that may act as a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy substrate for sensitively capturing and counting bacteria. Moreover, we demonstrated that the use of photon-triggered surface plasmon resonance of Ag on the WO3 surface resulted in a significantly improved photocatalytic activity under visible light (638 nm). The photogenerated reactive oxygen species have been shown to be efficien

Indium tin oxide nanoparticles with compositionally tunable surface plasmon resonance frequencies in the near-IR region.

Here we report the synthesis of conducting indium tin oxide (ITO) nanoparticles (NPs) and their surface plasmon resonance (SPR) properties. The SPR peaks of the ITO NPs can be easily tuned by changing the concentration of Sn doping from 3 to 30 mol %. The shortest SPR wavelength of 1618 nm in 10% Sn-doped ITO NPs may reflect the highest electron carrier density in the ITO NPs. The controllable SPR frequencies of metal oxides may offer a novel approach for noble-metal-free SPR applications. Unlike noble-metal nanostructures, ITO has no inter- and intraband transitions in the vis-near-IR region

Finite-concentration thermodynamics of amphipathic peptide adsorption on curved lipid membranes.

Curvature plays a central role in regulating peptide and protein adsorption on lipid membranes. Using a molecular-theory framework in a semi-open ensemble, we quantify how membrane curvature, ionic strength, membrane surface charge, and lipid packing jointly modulate peptide adsorption. We focus on LL-37, a human antimicrobial peptide sensitive to membrane curvature. We show that curvature sensing arises from collective effects: although local peptide-membrane free-energy profiles are only weakly curvature-dependent, the overall amount of adsorbed peptide increases markedly on curved geometrie

EMamba: A MoE-enhanced state space network for robust steel surface defect detection.

Steel surface defect detection is a critical component of intelligent manufacturing and industrial visual quality control. However, due to large variations in defect scale, elongated morphologies, strong directional continuity, and high inter-class visual similarity, existing detection methods struggle to achieve a desirable balance among global structural modeling, semantically adaptive representation, and computational efficiency. To address these challenges, this paper proposes an efficient steel surface defect detection framework, termed EMamba. By integrating state space modeling, conditi
