COVID-19-associated trends in Medicare utilization for plastic and reconstructive surgery.

PURPOSE: The Medicare population is a subset of plastic surgery patients with unique needs and characteristics. Studies before COVID-19 have shown decreasing reimbursements and increasing charges. We aimed to characterize changes in Medicare reimbursements and charges in plastic and reconstructive (PR) surgery since the pandemic. METHODS: The CMS Medicare Physician & Other Practitioners database was used to analyze all procedural codes billed by PR surgeons from 2013 to 2023. Subgroup analysis was conducted based on the organ system (integumentary, musculoskeletal, nervous, and other). Primar

A review of paediatric dog bite injuries presenting to plastic surgery services.

BACKGROUND: Dog bites represent a significant number of presentations to plastic surgery services in Ireland. Recent changes to legislation around ownership of restricted breeds of dog has highlighted safety in the public domain. The aim of this study was to provide a descriptive analysis of paediatric dog bite injuries. METHODS: This was a retrospective case series of all dog bite injuries referred to the plastic surgery service in Children's Hospital Ireland at Crumlin over a 3-year period (2020-2023). Patient demographics, group or breed of dog, details of injuries and interventions requir

Looking to the Future: How Will Personalised Medicine Impact Facial Plastic Surgery.

AIMS AND BACKGROUNDS: The objectives of this study are to examine the emerging role of personalized medicine in facial plastic surgery and to consider how biologically, anatomically, and psychologically tailored approaches may refine both aesthetic and reconstructive care. HISTORICAL ASPECTS: Facial plastic surgery has traditionally relied on anatomical principles, surgical expertise, and population-based evidence. Personalized medicine represents a shift toward more individualized care by incorporating patient-specific biological and phenotypic variation into clinical decision-making. ANATO

The Orthoplastic Approach: Principles Integrating Orthopedic and Plastic Surgery in Trauma Care.

Complex extremity trauma presents a major reconstructive challenge because it simultaneously involves skeletal injury, soft-tissue loss, vascular compromise, contamination, and functional impairment. The orthoplastic approach has emerged as an integrated model that promotes early collaboration between orthopedic trauma and reconstructive plastic surgery teams to optimize limb salvage and recovery. This structured narrative review examined the principles, reconstructive strategies, organizational models, and clinical implications of orthoplastic management through a structured search of PubMed,

Periodontal plastic surgery for cases with fixed "hygienic" lingual retainer: Case study.

BACKGROUND: The fixed "hygienic" lingual retainer (FHLiR)'s design is consistently observed as a contributing factor to plaque accumulation, possible minor undesired tooth movement, resulting in buccal bone loss, and gingival recession (GR). This case study aimed to describe the clinical outcomes of a combined periodontal treatment and periodontal plastic surgical approach for the treatment of GR in patients using FHLiR. METHODS: This case study involves three systemically healthy, non-smoking patients with localized GRs (RT1 and/or RT2) in the mandibular central incisors associated with FHLi

Medical students' confidence in managing plastic surgery conditions: A cross-sectional survey.

Plastic surgery is disproportionately under-represented in placements for the United Kingdom Foundation Programme and previous research has highlighted a deficiency in its inclusion in the undergraduate curriculum. A cross-sectional survey of medical students was performed regarding plastic surgery-related conditions. The survey aimed to assess their confidence in management and their perceptions of the utility of this knowledge in their future careers. The results from 308 participants spanning 17 medical schools revealed that in comparison to pneumonia, students were significantly less confi
