[Experimental study of the suture of the intraocular lens sutured to the ciliary sulcus. Needle passage and distance from the limbus].

OBJECTIVE: To discover which technique is best to scleral suture fixation of the lens in the ciliary sulcus, based on two needle direction options: passing the needle from the outer part of the eyeball inwards or from the inner part outwards and to know at what distance the needle must be passed from the sclerocorneal limbus. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We used 40 cadaver eyes conserved in 10% formaldehyde. The needle was passed from the interior to the exterior of the eye, observing whether if it had crossed through the ciliary sulcus and the distance of the needle from the limbus. Stitches were a

Dura mater maintains rat cranial sutures in vitro by regulating suture cell proliferation and collagen production.

Craniosynostosis, the premature osseous obliteration of cranial vault sutures, can result from mutations in genes encoding components of growth factor signaling systems or the extracellular matrix (ECM). Little is known of the capacity of osteoprogenitor cells of the cranial sutures to divide or to synthesize ECM in situ. Osteoblasts derived from patients with prematurely fused sutures were reported to express alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin at elevated levels, while proliferating at a rate comparable to control cells [DePollack et al., JBMR, 1996]; however, the suture osteoprogenitors, t…

Biopolymer - functionalized surgical sutures for tendon repair: A review from design to application.

Tendon injury, as a common clinical condition, severely impairs the recovery of patients' limb functions, making the development of effective repair strategies an urgent necessity. Surgical sutures are key medical devices for tendon repair, among which biopolymer - functionalized sutures have become a research hotspot due to their unique performance advantages. This review takes them as the core research object and systematically sorts out their core design criteria. In terms of material selection, natural biopolymers (such as collagen, chitosan, and silk fibroin) exhibit good biocompatibility…

Subciliary Closure in Orbital Fractures: A Comparison Between Cutaneous and Cutaneo-periosteal Sutures.

BACKGROUND: The orbital floor is the most fragile region of the facial skeleton and is highly prone to fractures, making precise anatomical restoration essential to prevent complications. Among surgical approaches, the subciliary and transconjunctival techniques are most commonly used. Closure is typically performed in 2 layers: periosteum and skin. METHODS: A prospective, experimental, longitudinal comparative study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital in western Mexico between July and October 2024. A total of 100 patients with orbital floor fractures were randomly assigned into 2 grou

Efficacy of slowly absorbable versus permanent sutures in primary repair of umbilical hernias.

PURPOSE: For small primary umbilical hernias, suture-only repair remains common, yet there is limited comparative evidence guiding suture material selection. Our study compared the recurrence and complication rates of primary umbilical hernias using permanent or absorbable sutures. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study using the Abdominal Core Health Quality Collaborative (ACHQC), a national, prospectively maintained hernia registry. Adults undergoing elective, open primary umbilical hernia repair without mesh between May 2014 and February 2024 with ≥ 1-year follow-up were includ…

A giant bleb over a non-valved tube successfully treated with compression sutures.

PURPOSE: To report a rare case of an anteriorly enlarged giant bleb following Ahmed ClearPath 350 glaucoma drainage device implantation, successfully treated with compression sutures. OBSERVATIONS: A 50-year-old man with a history of primary open angle glaucoma and multiple prior glaucoma procedures presented with a progressively enlarging inferonasal conjunctival bleb in the right eye, six months after Ahmed ClearPath 350 implantation. Examination revealed visual acuity (VA) of 20/40, intraocular pressure (IOP) of 6 mmHg, and a large, elevated, fluid-filled conjunctival bleb. While bleb form…

Transconjunctival Compression Sutures for Postoperative Hypotony After PRESERFLO MicroShunt Revision: A Case Report.

This is a case in which postoperative hypotony following bleb revision after PRESERFLOTM MicroShunt (MicroShunt) implantation in exfoliation glaucoma was successfully managed using transconjunctival compression sutures. An 82-year-old man with exfoliation glaucoma underwent MicroShunt implantation in the right eye for uncontrolled intraocular pressure (IOP). Due to bleb failure, open bleb revision with mitomycin C was subsequently performed. On postoperative day 14, severe hypotony with circumferential kissing choroidal detachment developed, and transconjunctival compression sutures were place…

Stabilization of the Bony Pyramid in Rhinoplasty Using Dorsal Aesthetic Lines Bony Sutures.

INTRODUCTION: Modern rhinoplasty relies on osteotomies that risk destabilizing the nasal pyramid. While suture fixation is standard for cartilage, bony stabilization remains technically challenging. We present a novel piezosurgery-assisted 8-shaped "bridge suture" technique along dorsal aesthetic lines (DAL) to address this gap. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 2021 to 2023, 28 patients underwent structural rhinoplasty with DAL bony sutures. The technique involved: (1) DAL osteotomies via piezotome, (2) two pairs of bilateral 2-3 mm perforations, and (3) 4-0 PDS figure-eight sutures securing later…

Outcomes of inferior rectus muscle recession surgery using absorbable versus non-absorbable sutures.

INTRODUCTION: Inferior rectus (IR) recession surgery is commonly performed for vertical strabismus, yet overcorrection risk remains high (21-50%) due to factors like lower lid retractors, suture dissolution, and muscle tension in thyroid eye disease (TED). This study aims to contribute novel insights by comparing clinical outcomes of IR recession using absorbable and non-absorbable sutures. METHODS: A retrospective study (01/12/20-31/01/23) was conducted at a tertiary referral center on patients undergoing IR recession with absorbable or non-absorbable sutures. The following data were collect…

Transmission of Genetic Material and Malignant Cells of Cutaneous Origin via Surgical Sutures.

BACKGROUND: Seeding of skin cancer cells following diagnostic or therapeutic surgical procedures can occur and might cause local recurrences. As current preferred therapy for skin malignancy is surgical excision, seeding of tumour cells by manipulating malignant tissue or suturing can be another factor leading to recurrences. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether genetic material and malignant cells adhere to standard suture materials. METHODS: This prospective study included patients who underwent excision of skin lesions. Monofilament and braided sutures were examined. Sutures were passed through…

Fast absorbing gut sutures in dermatologic surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Fast gut cutaneous sutures have become more prominent due to their low tissue reactivity, rapid absorption, and elimination of suture removal visits. It is not known how fast gut sutures compare to other closure modalities. METHODS: A comprehensive literature review was conducted to identify randomized controlled trials comparing fast gut sutures to alternative closure methods during dermatologic surgery. Data collected included patient and physician assessed cosmetic outcome as well as standardized complication rates. RESULTS: Six studies were included in final analysis and re…

Orthopedic Skin Closure in South India: Sutures Versus Staples and Their Postoperative Outcomes.

Introduction Skin closure is an essential step in deciding the success of a surgery. Despite this, the choice of skin closure material is frequently overlooked when making surgical decisions. Skin closure plays an important role in promoting rapid wound healing and decreasing the length of hospital stay, especially in orthopedic surgeries. Our study focused on comparing the outcome of wound closure in orthopedic surgeries with sutures and staples in a South Indian population. Materials and methods We enrolled 120 patients undergoing orthopedic procedures at Chettinad Hospital and Research Inst…

Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial Comparing Absorbable and Nonabsorbable Sutures in A1 Pulley Release.

BACKGROUND: Both absorbable and nonabsorbable sutures are used to correct palmar incisions or lacerations. Nonabsorbable sutures have been used without complications but require removal at a follow-up appointment. Alternatively, the use of absorbable sutures has increased in popularity as postoperative suture removal is not required but is associated with local immunological and inflammatory responses. In this study, we compared the scar quality and outcomes of nonabsorbable and absorbable sutures in A1 pulley release. METHODS: Patients who underwent A1 pulley release were randomized to 1 of …

Alar cinch sutures in orthognathic surgery: scoping review and proposal of a classification.

Orthognathic surgery and the Le Fort I osteotomy result in noticeable alterations to the nasal/nasolabial anatomy. The alar base cinch technique is a surgical technique to control lateralization of the base of the nose and is well described in the literature. The aim of this scoping review was to identify every unique alar cinch suture technique reported in orthognathic surgery and to propose a classification for the different techniques described. A search was conducted in the PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Scopus electronic databases covering the period May 1980 to July 2020, which identified

Cost-effectiveness analysis : fibrin glue versus sutures for conjonctival fixation during pterygion surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Pterygium surgery requires the removal of pterygium tissue and repair of the conjunctiva with either sutures or fibrin glue. The literature suggests that the cost of fibrin glue could be compensated by reducing procedure time and be more cost-effective. However, to our knowledge, no formal studies have examined this hypothesis. METHOD: Retrospective chart review of patients who received pterygium surgery with only sutures between January 2008 and January 2010, and those whose surgeons used fibrin glue with or without sutures, between April 2017 and November 2018. Equipment cost, op…
