A daily-durable wearable sweat biosensing device with robust reticular conductive biogel interface.

Wearable biosensing devices are essential for managing chronic diseases at home. However, their clinical translation has been hindered by the poor durability and stability of biosensors during long-term use in real-world scenarios. Here, we report a daily-durable wearable electrochemical biosensor array by encapsulating ZIF-90@enzymes within a conductive gel matrix to form a robust reticular biogel interface for continuous analysis of sweat glucose and lactate. The wearable biosensors exhibit exceptional environmental adaptability and durability, retaining >95 % sensitivity after summer outdoo…

WS2/CuO-based non-enzymatic sensor for the detection of glucose in sweat.

BACKGROUND: Traditional blood glucose monitoring requires piercing the skin to obtain blood samples, which brings inconvenience and discomfort to diabetic patients. Sweat glucose content has been proven to be related to blood glucose concentration, so sweat glucose detection shows significant advantages in non-invasive blood glucose monitoring. The performance of enzyme-based glucose sensors is easily affected by external environments such as temperature and pH. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop non-enzymatic glucose sensors with good stability, low cost and high performance for sw…

Development and benchtop testing of an aptamer-based sweat sensor for CRP detection.

The development of an assay is presented for an aptamer-based flexible sensor aimed at the non-invasive detection of C-reactive protein in sweat that is passively perspired. CRP is a well-preserved plasma protein and a homopentameric acute-phase inflammatory protein crucial to the body's inflammatory responses. A significant advancement in this platform is the incorporation of aptamers, which provide notable benefits compared to conventional antibodies in biosensor applications. Incorporating aptamers enables the flexible sensor to deliver accurate and ongoing monitoring capabilities, converti…

Lactate threshold evaluation in swimming using a sweat lactate sensor: A prospective study.

Since assessing aerobic capacity is key to enhancing swimming performance, a simple and widely applicable technology should be developed. Therefore, we aimed to noninvasively visualize real-time changes in sweat lactate (sLA) levels during swimming and investigate the relationship between lactate thresholds in sweat (sLT) and blood (bLT). This prospective study included 24 university swimmers (age: 20.7 s ± 1.8 years, 58% male) who underwent exercise tests at incremental speeds with or without breaks in a swimming flume to measure heart rate (HR), bLT, and sLT based on sLA levels using a water…

Fully Integrated Multiplexed Wristwatch for Real-Time Monitoring of Electrolyte Ions in Sweat.

Considerable progress has already been made in sweat sensors based on electrochemical methods to realize real-time monitoring of biomarkers. However, realizing long-term monitoring of multiple targets at the atomic level remains extremely challenging, in terms of designing stable solid contact (SC) interfaces and fully integrating multiple modules for large-scale applications of sweat sensors. Herein, a fully integrated wristwatch was designed using mass-manufactured sensor arrays based on hierarchical multilayer-pore cross-linked N-doped porous carbon coated by reduced graphene oxide (NPCs@rG…

Metastatic Endocrine Mucin-Producing Sweat Gland Carcinoma to the Lung: A Case Report.

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) is a rare, low-grade neuroendocrine neoplasm previously believed to be indolent in nature. There have only previously been six reported cases of metastases and none of thoracic structures. This case shows a metastatic EMPSGC in a 72-year-old male with a complex oncologic history and is the first reported case of metastases to the lung. As increased recognition of this entity continues to grow, it is important to consider it as part of the differential in mucinous and/or neuroendocrine neoplasms for appropriate management. This case adds …

Wearable Battery-Free Perspiration Analyzing Sites Based on Sweat Flowing on ZnO Nanoarrays.

We fabricated wearable perspiration analyzing sites for actively monitoring physiological status during exercises without any batteries or other power supply. The device mainly consists of ZnO nanowire (NW) arrays and flexible polydimethylsiloxane substrate. Sweat on the skin can flow into the flow channels of the device through capillary action and flow along the channels to ZnO NWs. The sweat flowing on the NWs (with lactate oxidase modification) can output a DC electrical signal, and the outputting voltage is dependent on the lactate concentration in the sweat as the biosensing signal. ZnO …

[Review of the sweat test indications in a Brussels' cystic fibrosis reference center].

UNLABELLED: Sweat test is the gold standard of the diagnosis of cystic fibrosis (CF). The aim of our study was to identify the indications leading to perform a sweat test and those that led to the diagnosis of CF. METHODOLOGY: We collected data of all sweat tests performed between 2008, 1th of March and 2015, 28th of February. They were analyzed following Rosenstein diagnosis criteria (1998): clinical manifestations suggesting CF, positive neonatal screening (≥ 1 positive assay of immunoreactive trypsin) or familial history of CF. RESULTS: We reviewed 1,208 sweat tests over this period. Pati…

Direct reprogramming of epidermal cells toward sweat gland-like cells by defined factors.

Several studies have reported inducing adult cells into sweat gland-like cells; however, slow transition and low efficiency limit the potential for cell-based treatment. Here, we show that overexpression of the transcription factor FoxC1 was sufficient to reprogram epidermal cells to induced functional sweat gland-like cells (iSGCs). The iSGCs expressing secreting-related genes, had a global gene expression profile between fetal SGCs (P5) and adult SGCs (P28). Moreover, iSGCs transplanted into the burn mice model facilitated wound repair and sweat gland regeneration. We further demonstrated th…

Endocrine Mucin-Producing Sweat Gland Carcinoma of the Eyelid Associated With Mucinous Adenocarcinoma.

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma, a rare, low-grade neoplasm with predilection for the eyelids, has been posited as a precursor to invasive mucinous adenocarcinoma. Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma and its concurrence with mucinous adenocarcinoma have received little attention in the ophthalmic literature. The combination of the 2 histologic patterns parallels endocrine ductal carcinoma in situ of the breast and its transition to Type B invasive mucinous carcinoma. The authors describe a 59-year-old man who developed a tumor of the right upper eyelid showing endoc…

Noninvasive Sweat-Based Diagnosis of Visceral Leishmaniasis and Post Kala-Azar Dermal Leishmaniasis.

The diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is one of the foremost barriers in the control of this disease, as demonstration of the parasite by splenic/bone marrow aspiration is relatively difficult and requires expertise and laboratory support. The aim of the present study was to find a noninvasive diagnostic approach using the existing recombinant kinesine-39 (rK-39) immunochromatographic nitrocellulose strips test (ICT) with a human sweat specimen for the diagnosis of VL. The investigation was carried out on specimens (blood, sweat, and urine) collected from 58 confirmed VL, 50 confirmed p…
