[Autonomic innervation of the female pelvis. Anatomic basis].

The pelvic plexus with its sympathetic (hypogastric nerves, sacral sympathetic trunk) and parasympathetic (pelvic splanchnic nerves) sources provides and distributes the autonomic nervous supply for the pelvic organs. This homogeneous autonomic nerve plate is located within and deeply to the peritoneal fold (recto-uterine in the female pelvis) lying medially to the internal iliac vessels. Autonomic nerve fibres emerge from the pelvic plexus and travel to the anterolateral aspect of the rectum and the inferolateral and posterolateral aspects of the bladder and female genital tract. In addition,

Renal denervation based on experimental rationale.

Excessive activation of the sympathetic nervous system is one of the pathophysiological hallmarks of hypertension and heart failure. Within the central nervous system, the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus and the rostral ventrolateral medulla in the brain stem play critical roles in the regulation of sympathetic outflow to peripheral organs. Information from the peripheral circulation, including serum concentrations of sodium and angiotensin II, is conveyed to the PVN via adjacent structures with a weak blood-brain barrier. In addition, signals from baroreceptors, chemorecepto…

Overview of the Anatomy, Physiology, and Pharmacology of the Autonomic Nervous System.

Comprised of the sympathetic nervous system, parasympathetic nervous system, and enteric nervous system, the autonomic nervous system (ANS) provides the neural control of all parts of the body except for skeletal muscles. The ANS has the major responsibility to ensure that the physiological integrity of cells, tissues, and organs throughout the entire body is maintained (homeostasis) in the face of perturbations exerted by both the external and internal environments. Many commonly prescribed drugs, over-the-counter drugs, toxins, and toxicants function by altering transmission within the ANS. …

The extended autonomic system, dyshomeostasis, and COVID-19.

The pandemic viral illness COVID-19 is especially life-threatening in the elderly and in those with any of a variety of chronic medical conditions. This essay explores the possibility that the heightened risk may involve activation of the "extended autonomic system" (EAS). Traditionally, the autonomic nervous system has been viewed as consisting of the sympathetic nervous system, the parasympathetic nervous system, and the enteric nervous system. Over the past century, however, neuroendocrine and neuroimmune systems have come to the fore, justifying expansion of the meaning of "autonomic." Add…

The ratio of heart rate to heart rate variability reflects sympathetic activity during incremental cycling exercise.

A low-frequency to a high-frequency component ratio (LF/HF) in heart rate variability (HRV) may not accurately reflect sympathetic nervous activity during exercise. Thus, a valid HRV-based index of sympathetic nervous activity is needed. Therefore, the heart rate to LF ratio (Heart rate/LF) was evaluated as sympathetic nervous activity index which is reflected by catecholamine levels during incremental exercise. In this study, 15 healthy adults performed an incremental exercise test using a cycle ergometer. HRV was derived from electrocardiography and HRV components related to the autonomic ne

Abdominal vagal signalling: a novel role for cholecystokinin in circulatory control?

It is generally accepted that the gastrointestinal circulation is primarily under the control of the enteric nervous system. However, recent studies have demonstrated that the sympathetic nervous system may play a greater role in postprandial gastrointestinal circulatory function than was thought previously. Cholecystokinin (CCK) is a gastrointestinal hormone released from enteroendocrine cells lining the intestinal mucosa in response to feeding. Systemic administration of CCK induces gastrointestinal vasodilation mediated by withdrawal of sympathetic vasomotor drive. CCK differentially influe…

Resting sympathetic transduction in veterans with PTSD.

PURPOSE: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with autonomic dysregulation characterized by heightened sympathetic nervous system and reduced parasympathetic nervous system activity that contribute to increased cardiovascular risk. Prior work has shown that individuals with PTSD have augmented increases in muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) during sympathoexcitatory stressors and increased vascular alpha-1 adrenergic receptor sensitivity. However, sympathetic transduction, defined as the blood pressure (BP) response to MSNA, has not been previously examined in PTSD. We inve…

Experimental 'jet lag' causes sympathoexcitation via oxidative stress through AT1 receptor in the brainstem.

Circadian disruptions through frequent transmeridian travel, rotating shift work, and poor sleep hygiene are associated with an array of physical and mental health maladies, including the abnormal autonomic nervous system. We have demonstrated that the oxidative stress through AT(1) receptor in the brain activates sympathetic nervous system. The aim of the present study was to determine whether experimental 'jet lag' causes sympathoexcitation via oxidative stress through AT(1) receptor in the cardiovascular center of the brainstem (rostral ventrolateral medulla; RVLM) or not. Experimental 'jet…

Assessment of autonomic nervous system in patients with epilepsy in the interictal state. A pilot study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system often accompanies partial and generalized epileptic seizures. In some epileptic patients dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system is also present in the interictal state. Cardiovascular autonomic disturbances are possibly associated with the pathogenesis of sudden unexpected death in people with epilepsy. The aim of the study was to evaluate the autonomic nervous system in patients with epilepsy in the interictal state and to assess the clinical usefulness of applied methods. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was done in 21

[Central autonomic failures].

Autonomic nervous system (ANS) modulates the function of all body organs through both parasympathetic and sympathetic fibers. Orthostatic hypotension is frequently observed in the course of central nervous system diseases including cortical (stroke, epilepsy, dementias), neurodegenerative (Parkinson's disease, multisystem atrophies) and spinal cord diseases. In some cases, the mechanism of orthostatic hypotension associated with central nervous system diseases involves a dysfunction of peripheral ANS fibers.

[Neurogenic autonomic dysfunction in adults].

Neurogenic autonomic dysfunction (NAD) is underdiagnosed, and it is likely in patients, who have orthostatic hypotension and symptoms from multiple organ systems as well as abnormal results from a neurological examination. A clinical and neurophysiological examination of the autonomic nervous system combined with a standardised paraclinical evaluation should be performed. NAD may be present in neurodegenerative disorders, vitamin deficiency, toxicity, infection, and in paraneoplastic, metabolic, hereditary and immune-mediated conditions.

Dysautonomia in fatal familial insomnia as an indicator of the potential role of the thalamus in autonomic control.

Fatal familial insomnia (FFI) is characterized by insomnia, dysautonomia, disruption of circadian rhythms, and motor dysfunction. The typical neuropathological findings in FFI are severe neuronal depletion in the mediodorsal (MD) and anteroventral nuclei of the thalamus. The interaction between the thalamus and central autonomic control mechanisms is poorly understood. The central autonomic areas include the anterior cingulate and insular cortices; amygdala, paraventricular nucleus, dorsomedial nucleus, and lateral hypothalamic area; periaqueductal gray; parabrachial nucleus; ventrolateral med

[Heart rate variability].

Heart rate variability (HRV) has become a useful parameter for the quantification of autonomic nervous function. HRV has been quantified, ei … ated by the parasympathetic system. The low frequency band is regulated by both sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. We demonstrated that the diurnal variation of HRV may afford additional information, such as ultradian changes of autonomic activity, possibly due to REM/NREM cycles. It is believed that simultaneous monitoring of other physiological parameters su …

Microneurographic recording from unmyelinated nerve fibers in neurological disorders: an update.

Microneurography is a unique neurophysiological technique allowing direct recording of unmyelinated postganglionic sympathetic or afferent nociceptive fibers by tungsten needles inserted into a peripheral nerve fascicle. In recent years, microneurography has been used to ascertain autonomic impairments in central neurological disorders such as sleep disorders, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or vasovagal syncope. Abnormal resting muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) and skin sympathetic nerve activity (SSNA) or the abnormal sympathetic response to arousal have been desc

Regulation of autonomic nerve activities by central pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide.

Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) is a peptidergic neurotransmitter that is expressed in high levels in nervous systems. Here, we investigated the roles of PACAP in autonomic system regulation by evaluating the changes caused in the autonomic nerve activities after injecting PACAP into the central nervous system (CNS) and examining stress-induced blood glucose changes in PACAP-deficient (PACAP-/-) mice. Renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA), blood pressure, and heart rate were elevated after injecting PACAP into the third cerebral ventricle (3CV). Similarly, other sy

Cardiac dysfunctions following spinal cord injury.

The aim of this article is to analyze cardiac dysfunctions occurring after spinal cord injury (SCI). Cardiac dysfunctions are common complic … ating into intermediolateral nuclei of T1-L2 spinal cord segments. Loss of supraspinal control over sympathetic nervous system results in reduced overall sympathetic activity below the level of injury and unopposed parasympathetic outflow through intact vagal nerve. SCI associates significant cardiac dysfunction. Impairment of autonomic nervous control system, mostly in pat …
