A case of Budd-Chiari syndrome associated with obstruction of the inferior vena cava is reported. The case was complicated by Sjögren's syndrome and chronic thyroiditis. A marked prolongation of activated partial thromboplastin time, due to circulating anticoagulant, was noted. Interrelation of thrombosis of the inferior vena cava, circulating anticoagulant, and Sjögren's syndrome is suggested.

Brugada syndrome (BrS) is a cardiac channelopathy associated with an elevated risk of arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death compared with the general population. Since its initial description in 1992 by Pedro and Josep Brugada, there has been tremendous progress in our understanding and management of BrS. The condition is characterized by 'coved' ST segment elevations in the anterior precordial electrocardiogram leads, which occasionally requires additional pharmacological provocation for diagnosis. Substantial geographical variation in the prevalence, genetic characteristics and clinical behav…

VEXAS SYNDROME. VEXAS (Vacuoles, E1 Enzyme, X-linked, Autoinflammatory, Somatic) syndrome is a recently described autoinflammatory syndrome, mostly affecting men above 50 years, caused by somatic mutation in the X-linked UBA1 gene. Patients present a broad spectrum of inflammatory manifestations (fever, neutrophilic dermatosis, chondritis, pulmonary infiltrates, ocular inflammation, venous thrombosis) with hematological involvement (macrocytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, vacuoles in myeloid and erythroid precursor cells, dysplastic bone marrow) which are responsible for significant morbidity and…

Rumination syndrome is a disorder of gut-brain interaction characterized by regurgitation of food and/or fluid shortly after ingestion. While medical management for stabilization of nutrition/weight and hydration and comorbid gastrointestinal symptoms is pertinent, behavioral intervention is the primary treatment to address rumination syndrome. This article describes rumination syndrome, the epidemiology and pathophysiology, medical and psychosocial consequences, and medical and behavioral treatment. A case study is utilized throughout for further description. Relevant research is also reviewe…

INTRODUCTION: Lower back disorders are prevalent and a significant reason for emergency care visits. In 2020, 619 million people experienced low back pain, expected to rise to 843 million by 2050. A common cause is the presence of a lumbosacral transitional vertebra (LSTV). Objectives: This study evaluates the prevalence of Bertolotti Syndrome in patients with low back pain in an emergency setting and assesses interobserver reliability of LSTV classifications.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 1023 lumbar spine radiographs from patients presenting with low back pain from 2018 to 2020 was c…

POEMS syndrome (Polyneuropathy, Organomegaly, Endocrinopathy, Monoclonal Protein, Skin changes) is a syndrome that involves a monoclonal B-cell proliferation, most often plasmacytic, and a variable number of manifestations listed or not in the acronym. These manifestations include sclerotic bone lesions, plasmacytic Castleman disease, papillary edema, peripheral edema, ascites, thrombocytosis and/or polycythemia, venous and/or arterial thrombosis, and renal, pulmonary, and cardiac impairments [1]. Diagnosis is often delayed due to the rarity of this entity and its clinical polymorphism, which …

Lacertus syndrome is a relatively rare condition that occurs because of median nerve compression at the elbow. Despite its low prevalence, it is important for healthcare professionals to be aware of this condition and its potential symptoms to provide timely and accurate diagnosis and treatment. This review provides a comprehensive overview of lacertus syndrome, including its anatomy and physiology, symptoms, and challenges of diagnosis. In particular, the article highlights the potential for misdiagnosis as carpal tunnel syndrome or other conditions that affect the median nerve and provides g…

Turner syndrome (TS) is a sex chromosome disorder affecting phenotypic females who have one intact X chromosome and a completely or partially missing second sex chromosome. It was first described approximately a century ago by Seresevskij, Ullrich and Turner. However, the cytogenetic basis of TS was only reported by Ford in 1959 following Tjio and Levan's optimisation of chromosome visualisation. TS karyotypes include classic monosomy X (40%-50%); monosomy X mosaicism (3%-25%); isochromosome X (10%-18%); ring X (10%-16%); mosaicism for monosomy X and a normal or structurally abnormal Y chromos…

Rett syndrome (RTT) is a severe, progressive, neurodevelopmental disorder, which affects predominantly females. In most cases, RTT is associated with pathogenic variants in MECP2. MeCP2, the protein product of MECP2, is known to regulate gene expression and is highly expressed in the brain. RTT is characterized by developmental regression of spoken language and hand use that, with hand stereotypies and impaired ambulation, constitute the four core diagnostic features. Affected individuals may present multiple other neurological impairments and comorbidities, such as seizures, breathing irregul…
