BAT is a monoclonal antibody (mAb) produced against membranes of a human Burkitt lymphoma cell line (Daudi) that was selected for its ability to stimulate lymphocyte proliferation. BAT manifests anti-tumor properties in mice bearing a variety of murine tumors. BAT also induced regression of human tumors inoculated into SCID mice that had been engrafted with human lymphocytes. BACKGROUND: Allograft heart valves are commonly used in cardiac surgery but ultimately fail. This situation is most acute in children. This study addresses the role of T cell-mediated immune damage in allograft valve failure.
METHODS: Syngeneic (Lewis to Lewis) or allogeneic (Brown Norway to Lewis) aortic valve grafts were implanted infrarenally into Lewis rat recipients (n = 24). Allogeneic valve grafts were also implanted into T cell-deficient rats (nude; n = 12). At 7, 14, and 28 days the valves were explanted and examined for structural integrity and cellular infiltration.

Mercurials have been shown to cause apoptosis in human T cells. The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the relative susceptibility of resting versus activated T cells to methyl mercury chloride (MeHgCl)-induced cell death. Apoptosis was assessed by Hoechst 33258 and 7-AAD staining and annexin V binding. T cell responses to a specific Leishmania antigens, 70kD and 116kD were investigated in individuals from an endemic area for leishmaniasis. To determine whether part of the anti-inflammatory effects of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) was related to inhibition of T cell interactions with endothelial cells (EC), the effects of PGE2 and other cAMP-elevating agents on the transendothelial migration of human T cells was examined. In an attempt to identify and characterize T-lymphocyte immunoregulatory abnormalities in immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), we have performed phenotypic and clonal analysis on peripheral T lymphocytes from 23 children with ITP. Quantitation of lymphocyte subpopulations showed that children with acute ITP had higher numbers of CD45RA+ and lower numbers of CD45RO+ T cells than children with chronic ITP or controls, but these differences may be age related. Since class I MHC glycoproteins may function by "screening and selecting" degraded proteins, we wished to determine whether very short peptides made within a cell were detected and bound by MHC, and presented for T cell perusal. We show that a 22 amino acid viral sequence containing a Db-restricted nonameric CTL epitope is sufficient to direct CTL recognition/lysis of H2b target cells. The mechanism of epitope presentation is by the "natural" endogenous route, and appears to direct lysis as effectively as wild-type virus infection, in which the epitope is part of a 236 residue glycoprotein.
