Sixty mice were inoculated intravenously with 200-400 Taenia solium eggs collected from the gravid proglottides of the adult worm expelled from a taeniasis patient after pumpkin seed and areca treatment. The mice were killed and dissected 2 months after inoculation, and were found infected with Cysticercus cellulosae. The diagnostic significance of elevated hydatid-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) as measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was evaluated against hydatid-specific IgG ELISA and Casoni's intradermal test in surgically proven cases of hydatidosis. Infestation with intestinal parasites can now be controlled by several broad-spectrum compounds. These drugs are particularly useful against multiple intestinal parasites, as frequently found in tropical and subtropical countries, and are well suited to mass treatment. We present the case of Taenia martis metacestode infection in a white-headed lemur (Eulemur albifrons) from a zoological park. A post-mortem examination was conducted on the unexpectedly perished animal and focal granulomatous pneumonia with metacestodic tissue was discovered. Identification of T. martis was conducted through amplification and sequencing of a 12S rRNA gene fragment. We discuss the possible sources of infection and underline the importance of this infection in public health and conservation.

Distributed worldwide, Taenia ovis infection is responsible for the condemnation of sheep carcasses in many countries. This review highlights the programme used in New Zealand to successfully control T. ovis in sheep, and discusses how similar approaches may be modified for use in Canada, given what is currently known about the epidemiology of T. ovis. The lifecycle of the parasite is well known, involving dogs as the definitive host and sheep or goats as the intermediate host.
