Cognitive flexibility in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

The aim of this study was to determine if there are differences in cognitive flexibility in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Fifty-three patients with an eating disorder (34 with anorexia nervosa and 19 with bulimia nervosa) and 35 healthy controls participated in the study. A battery of neuropsychological tests for cognitive flexibility was used, including Trail Making B, the Brixton Test, Verbal Fluency, the Haptic Illusion Test, a cognitive shifting task (CatBat) and a picture set test. Using exploratory factor analysis, four factors were obtained: 1: Simple Alternation; 2: Mental Flex

Relationship of sensory organization to balance function in patients with hemiplegia.

Standing balance and dynamic weight shifting were evaluated in 10 subjects with hemiplegia using a sensory organization balance test (SOT) and the Fugl-Meyer sensorimotor assessment (FMSA). The SOT is a timed balance test that evaluates somatosensory, visual, and vestibular function for maintenance of upright posture. In contrast, the FMSA is a functional status assessment that indicates the amount of assistance needed during various balance tasks and the tolerated duration of the task. The results of both clinical tests were compared to determine whether the SOT correlated with functional abi

Pathways involved in human conscious vision contribute to obstacle-avoidance behaviour.

Human patients with visual field defects following damage to their primary visual cortex (V1) will often misperceive the midpoint of a horizontal line. They tend to shift the midpoint away from the real position towards their blind field. In patients with unilateral neglect, where midpoint shifts can also be observed, these perceptual errors do not lead to errors in an obstacle-avoidance task, which also requires the ability to find the midpoint between two obstacles. This dissociation in neglect patients was taken as evidence that obstacle-avoidance performance is guided by visual information

An evaluation of a visual biofeedback intervention in dyslexic adults.

A prototype of a biofeedback system designed to treat dyslexia by improving heart-rate variability was evaluated in a single blind study of dyslexic adults. Treatment consisted of four 15 minute exposures to a visual display synchronized with either the participant's own cardiac cycle (intervention condition), or of a synthesized cardiac cycle (placebo condition). Repeated measures were made of picture naming speed, single word reading speed and accuracy, copying speed, heart-rate variability and performance on a lateralized visual temporal order judgement task. Small but significant improveme

Electrophysiological evidence of lateralized disturbances in children with learning disabilities.

This study used an electrophysiological measurement operation to investigate lateralized processing deficits associated with academic learning-disability subtypes. Fast frequency EEG activity in the 36-44 hertz (Hz) band was recorded from reading-disabled (RLD), arithmetic-disabled (ALD), and nondisabled control children engaged in verbal and nonverbal cognitive tasks. The control group, but neither LD group, exhibited a task-dependent shift in lateralization of 40 Hz EEG; the RLD subjects generated proportionately less left-hemisphere 40 Hz activity than control or ALD subjects during the ver

Near vision stress: vergence adaptation and accommodative fatigue.

Changes in the visual system following prolonged near work were investigated. Fifteen young, normal subjects undertook a severe, two hour long, binocular near visual task at 20 cm without any breaks. Fusional stress was assessed by near 'phoria change. Refractive change was measured with an autorefractometer to investigate whether transient myopia occurred and its subsequent recovery. The near task caused vergence adaptation which was primarily due to the fusional stress of the task (accounting for 67% of its variance). The 'phoria change was to a lesser extent (40%) dependent on the accommoda

Cortical activation patterns mediating motor recovery: a randomized controlled fNIRS study of rTMS-integrated dual-task training in stroke survivors.

BACKGROUND: Stroke remains a leading cause of long-term disability worldwide, imposing a substantial burden on individuals and healthcare systems. The recovery of gait and balance is often hindered by cognitive-motor interference, necessitating effective rehabilitation strategies. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate the synergistic efficacy of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) combined with cognitive-motor dual-task training on lower limb motor recovery in stroke survivors. METHODS: A total of 150 stroke survivors were randomized into three groups: the single-task walking grou

Measuring Radiologist Workload After AI Triage in Breast Cancer Screening.

Artificial intelligence triage can sharply reduce the number of human readings in breast cancer screening. Reading count, however, does not show how much radiologist time is saved or whether work shifts to arbitration, consensus, or other tasks. We propose a session-level reporting standard based on total active human interpretation minutes per 1000 women screened, work shifted elsewhere in the pathway, and diagnostic outcomes, together with a matched-session design to measure these effects directly.

Self vs. Other in Affective Forecasting: The Role of Psychological Distance and Decision from Experience.

This work tests self-other differences in the impact bias using the perspectives of psychological distance and decision from description vs. experience. Two studies compared the bias participants made for themselves and for others in a sequential gambling task. The task involved two identical gambles where the first gamble was mandatory and participants made decisions (accept or reject) for the second gamble. Planned decisions were made anticipating a gain or loss in the first gamble, and revised decisions were made following the actual experience of gain or loss. Study 1 compared decisions fo

The Rapid Capture of Attention by Rewarded Objects.

When a stimulus is associated with a reward, it becomes prioritized, and the allocation of attention to that stimulus increases. For low-level features, such as color, this reward-based allocation of attention can manifest early in time and as a faster and stronger shift of attention to targets with that color, as reflected by the N2pc (a parieto-occipital electrophysiological component peaking at ∼250 msec). It is unknown, however, if reward associations can similarly modulate attentional shifts to complex objects or object categories, or if reward-related modulation of attentional allocation

Testing the inter-hemispheric competition account of visual extinction with combined TMS/fMRI.

Theoretical models of visual neglect and extinction entail claims about the normal functioning of attention and parietal cortex in the healthy brain: (1) 'pseudoneglect', a commonly observed attentional bias towards left space, reflects the greater dominance of parietal cortex activity of the right versus left hemisphere; (2) the capacity to distribute attention bilaterally depends causally on the relative balance of parietal activity between the hemispheres; (3) disruption of the dominant right parietal cortex shifts this inter-hemispheric balance leftward, causing a rightward shift in attent

Executive decision-making in the domestic sheep.

Two new large animal models of Huntington's disease (HD) have been developed recently, an old world monkey (macaque) and a sheep. Macaques, with their large brains and complex repertoire of behaviors are the 'gold-standard' laboratory animals for testing cognitive function, but there are many practical and ethical issues that must be resolved before HD macaques can be used for pre-clinical research. By contrast, despite their comparable brain size, sheep do not enjoy a reputation for intelligence, and are not used for pre-clinical cognitive testing. Given that cognitive decline is a major ther

Intense sounds may alter the mechanical properties of the cochlear partition.

Morphological and structural changes have been observed in various cochlear elements following exposure to intense sounds. Whether these changes are sufficient to locally alter the mechanical properties of the cochlear partition is unknown. Here a psychophysical test for mechanical changes in the partition is developed and applied. Monaural exposures to an intense 1700-Hz tone were preceded and followed by a binaural task in which the subject adjusted the interaural time difference of a 250-Hz tone in order to perceive it as centered inside his head. If the local gradients of mass, stiffness,

Redesigning library orientation for first-year medical students during the pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Prior to 2020, library orientation for first-year medical students at Weill Cornell Medicine took the form of an on-site treasure hunt competition. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the orientation for the MD class of 2024 was shifted to an all-virtual format. This shift mandated a full redesign of the library orientation. CASE PRESENTATION: The Samuel J. Wood Library sought to preserve the excitement and fun of the treasure hunt in the new virtual format. The competition was redesigned as a Zoom meeting using breakout rooms, with library faculty and staff serving as team facilitators

Neural substrates of attentional bias for smoking-related cues: an FMRI study.

Attentional bias for drug-related stimuli, as measured by emotional Stroop (ES) tasks, is predictive of treatment outcomes for tobacco smoking and other abused drugs. Characterizing relationships between smoking-related attentional bias and brain reactivity to smoking images may help in identifying neural substrates critical to relapse vulnerability. To this end, we investigated putative relationships between interference effects in an offline smoking ES task and functional MRI (fMRI) measures of brain reactivity to smoking vs neutral images in women smokers. Positive correlations were found b

Perceptual ocular dominance plasticity is resilient to concurrent attentional demands in working memory.

Short-term monocular deprivation (MD) in adult humans induces a notable shift in perceptual ocular dominance towards the deprived eye. This form of visual plasticity has been proposed to share common mechanisms with other types of plasticity, such as those supporting working memory, based on a recent finding that the MD effect is impaired when a visual working memory task is performed concurrently. However, in that study, the visual content of the tasks and their attentional demands were not strictly controlled. To revisit the modulatory role of working memory in perceptual ocular dominance pl

Shuffle the Decks: Children Are Sensitive to Incidental Nonrandom Structure in a Sequential-Choice Task.

As children age, they can learn increasingly complex features of environmental structure-a key prerequisite for adaptive decision-making. Yet when we tested children (N = 304, 4-13 years old) in the Children's Gambling Task, an age-appropriate variant of the Iowa Gambling Task, we found that age was negatively associated with performance. However, this paradoxical effect of age was found only in children who exhibited a maladaptive deplete-replenish bias, a tendency to shift choices after positive outcomes and repeat choices after negative outcomes. We found that this bias results from sensiti

Age at onset in trichotillomania:clinical variables and neurocognitive performance.

OBJECTIVE: Trichotillomania (TTM), or compulsive hair pulling, is a common psychiatric disorder characterized by psychosocial impairment and reduced quality of life. The aim of this retrospective study was to characterize the impact of age at TTM onset on clinical variables and neuropsychological function using a variety of clinical and neurocognitive measures. METHOD: The study sample included 98 adult treatment-seeking individuals with a DSM-IV diagnosis of TTM. Correlates were explored by grouping participants into childhood-onset (onset at ≤ 11 years old, n = 42) or later-onset (≥ 12 year

Exploring Practices of Bedside Shift Report and Hourly Rounding. Is There an Impact on Patient Falls?

OBJECTIVE: To describe the relationship of inpatient falls to bedside shift report (BSR) and hourly rounding (HR). BACKGROUND: Falls are a major healthcare concern. Although measures such as BSR and HR are reported to reduce falls, studies are often based on self-reported data related to nurse compliance with protocols for HR and bedside report. METHODS: Observational data were collected on nursing tasks, including BSR and HR. RESULTS: Nine thousand six hundred ninety-three observations were recorded on 11 units at 4 hospitals over 281 shifts. Falls were associated with shift and day of the

The contribution of the supplementary motor area to explicit and implicit timing: A high-definition transcranial Random Noise Stimulation (HD-tRNS) study.

It is becoming increasingly accepted that timing tasks, and underlying temporal processes, can be partitioned on the basis of whether they require an explicit or implicit temporal judgement. Most neuroimaging studies of timing associated explicit timing tasks with activation of the supplementary motor area (SMA). However, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) studies perturbing SMA functioning across explicit timing tasks have generally reported null effects, thus failing to causally link SMA to explicit timing. The present study probed the involvement of SMA in both explicit and implicit ti
