A 17-year-old girl presented with acute-onset cervical pain, followed by left arm weakness and gait disturbances. Spinal cord astrocytoma was diagnosed by MRI performed at an outpatient facility (figure, A and B). The patient was admitted to the neurosurgery department to undergo spinal cord biopsy. A second neurologic evaluation indicated neuromyelitis optica (NMO) as the most likely diagnosis, which was confirmed by NMO-immunoglobulin G seropositivity. The patient was treated with rescue plasmapheresis with substantial clinical and radiologic (figure, C) improvement.

Marfan Syndrome (MFS) is an autosomal dominant, connective tissue disorder that is due to a deficiency in the structural protein, fibrillin. Medication errors related to incorrect drug dose calculation continue to plague nursing and jeopardize patient welfare. This research study spans 2 academic years (4 classes of senior undergraduate nursing students) and compares the use of 2 approaches to drug calculation: dimensional analysis and conventional methods (ratio-proportion and calculation formulas). Data analysis looked at several factors but primarily focused on conceptual accuracy.
