Same-territory chronic infarcts are common in intracranial atherosclerosis and are associated with future recurrence.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial atherosclerotic disease (ICAD) has a high risk of symptomatic recurrence. We investigated the prevalence of same-territory chronic infarcts among symptomatic ICAD patients, and their ability to discriminate between absence and presence of future same-territory ischaemic events. METHODS: In a retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data from two Australian stroke centres, patients were followed for recurrent ischaemia over 12 months. Ability to discriminate between absence and presence of recurrent stroke/TIA (Area-under-curve (AUC) in receiver-operating-char

Measuring the excess mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Northern Territory, Australia.

This study aims to assess whether there was any excess mortality among the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal populations in the Northern Territory (NT), Australia, during the COVID-19 pandemic. A time-series analysis using death data (1997-2023) was applied separately to the monthly and yearly death counts to develop an excess mortality surveillance model (using Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA)) for the NT population. Excess mortality was calculated by comparing expected deaths with actual deaths. In 2022, there was a statistically significant excess mortality of 193 (p < 0.01), c

Conducting cancer research in a conflict setting: a view from the occupied Palestinian territory.

Cancer is now the third leading cause of death in low-income countries (65% of cancer deaths globally), accounting for over 4 million deaths every year. Despite this, research on cancer control and access to cancer care in low-income countries is limited and that in conflict settings rare. The acute and chronic nature of conflict and the vulnerability of populations caught within it, allow researchers only narrow windows of opportunity to gather and follow-up cancer data prospectively. This is usually accompanied by a lack of infrastructure and trained human resources, absence of reliable and

Invisible in the system: Fragmented data and territorial inequalities in sickle cell disease in Brazil.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder strongly shaped by social, racial, and territorial inequalities. We identified, mapped, and characterized the population living with SCD in a state in Northeast Brazil and examined how fragmented institutional records affect the epidemiological visibility of the disease. We carried out a cross-sectional, multi-source study using institutional datasets on people with SCD. Records from these sources were consolidated and complemented by active tracing to update information. Adults were interviewed to describe their sociodemographic conditions, clin

Adverse Renal Outcomes in Patients With Mesothelioma-A Territory-Wide Real-World Data.

INTRODUCTION: Advances in mesothelioma management have translated into longer patient survival and different treatment-related side effects including nephrotoxicity. The risk of developing adverse renal outcomes in patients with mesothelioma and associated risk factors remains undefined. METHODS: We analysed territory-wide data from electronic health records of patients with mesothelioma followed at public hospitals in Hong Kong between 1st January 2000 to 31st December 2022. Prevalence of acute kidney injury (AKI), renal progression (> 30 mL/min drop in eGFR), and upstaging of chronic kidney

Territorial Socioeconomic Vulnerability and Clinical Outcomes in Pediatric Cancer at a Colombian Referral Center.

Background/Objectives: Childhood cancer outcomes are influenced by clinical, socioeconomic, and territorial factors, particularly in resource-limited settings. This study characterized pediatric cancer patients from Córdoba and Sucre, Colombia, and evaluated factors associated with clinical outcomes in a regional referral center. Methods: A retrospective hospital-based study included 434 patients aged 0-18 years diagnosed between 2018 and 2024. Sociodemographic, clinical, and territorial socioeconomic variables were analyzed using the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI). Clinical outcomes wer

Clustering of Cerebral Microbleeds in Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy: A Flow Territory-Based Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) are a key imaging marker of cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), but their individual spatial distribution and potential clustering remain poorly understood. PURPOSE: This study assessed whether CMBs exhibit patient-specific, flow territory-based clustering in sporadic (sCAA) and Dutch-type hereditary CAA (D-CAA). The arterial flow territory subdivision was chosen, considering the predilection of CMB location in the posterior cortex-not limited to the occipital lobe-and the prominent vascular role in CAA. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective cross-sectional study.

Clinically Silent Multi-Territory Aneurysms in Cadavers: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Aneurysms are permanent, focal dilations of vessels that are ≥150% of normal diameter. While single aneurysms are relatively common, the presence of multiple aneurysms in different vascular territories is uncommon, and consolidated discussions of such cases remain limited. We report the case of a 96-year-old male cadaver with extensive but clinically silent aortic aneurysms identified during routine anatomical dissection. A large abdominal tumor was also noted compressing the right renal artery. Additionally, we review published reports of multi-territory aneurysms, which highlight the heterog

Territorial Persistence of Residual Plasmodium falciparum Transmission in the Americas: A One Health Perspective.

Malaria reduction in the Americas has slowed despite sustained elimination efforts, suggesting important changes in the spatial organization of residual transmission. This study evaluated whether declining Plasmodium falciparum incidence between 2000 and 2023 was associated with increasing geographic concentration, spatial clustering, and territorial persistence across the region, with detailed subnational analysis in Colombia. Temporal trends were assessed using segmented regression, geographic concentration using Gini and Herfindahl-Hirschman indices, and spatial dependence using Moran's I a

Beyond national fertility rates: unmasking territorial differences in adolescent pregnancy in Ecuador.

INTRODUCTION: Teenage pregnancy is a significant public health challenge that may contribute to cycles of poverty in the context of social inequality. In Latin America and the Caribbean, Ecuador ranks third in terms of fertility rates. The objective of this study is to describe temporal trends and territorial patterns of adolescent fertility in Ecuador between 2015 and 2024, differentiating early adolescents (10-14 years) and late adolescents (15-19 years), and identifying priority territories for public health monitoring. METHOD: A descriptive observational study was conducted using anonymiz

Investigation of a norovirus outbreak at a catered social event, Australian Capital Territory, 2024.

BACKGROUND: An outbreak of gastrointestinal illness was notified, affecting attendees at a private function in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) in 2024. Investigations were conducted to determine the infectious agent, source of illness and mode of transmission, as well as to determine any public health actions required to prevent further illness. METHODS: Function attendees were surveyed using a modified standard gastroenteritis questionnaire. A confirmed outbreak case was defined as an individual who was unwell after attending the event and had a norovirus-positive clinical sample; a p

Incidence and prehospital management of convulsive status epilepticus in Martinique, a French Caribbean territory.

OBJECTIVE: Status epilepticus (SE) is an acute complication that can either occur in the course of epilepsy, or reflect an acute neurological or systemic disorder. SE incidence and associated mortality vary across regions and studied populations. There are no published data for the French overseas territories, including Martinique island where the population faces significant comorbidities and socioeconomic fragility. METHODS: This was a monocentric, retrospective, observational study conducted at the University Hospital of Martinique. All patients, managed by a mobile intensive care unit (MI

Recurrent Multi-territorial Ischemic Stroke As the Initial Presentation of Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura.

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a rare hypercoagulable disorder characterized by fever, acute hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, neurologic deficits, and renal failure. Due to the rarity of TTP, the infrequency of a complete TTP pentad, variable and atypical presentations, and overlap with other thrombotic microangiopathy, diagnosis is difficult to achieve. Here, we describe a middle-aged patient with recurrent multi-territory strokes, with the development of thrombocytopenia occurring later in the course of her illness without fever, hemolytic anemia, or renal failure. Etiologie

Disseminated Histoplasmosis in Persons Living with HIV, France and Overseas Territories,1992-2021.

Disseminated histoplasmosis is a major issue among persons with advanced HIV in the Americas; it might also affect persons in sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean, and Asia and can be mistaken for other infections. By using 1992-2021 data from the French hospital database on HIV, we analyzed 198,798 persons with HIV follow-up in France and its overseas territories, identifying 553 (2.8/1,000 person-years) first episodes of disseminated histoplasmosis. Incidence rates varied by site of follow-up: 9.41 in French Guiana, 0.76 in Guadeloupe, 0.62 in Martinique, and 0.079 in mainland France. Incidence

The epidemiology of amoebiasis in the Northern Territory of Australia over 20 years (2005 - 2024).

Amoebiasis is an important parasitic cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide and is known to be endemic in Northern Australia. The Northern Territory is the only jurisdiction in Australia where amoebiasis is notifiable. The epidemiology of amoebiasis across Australia is not well described. We undertook this retrospective study to describe the epidemiology of amoebiasis in the Northern Territory from 1 January 2005 to 30 June 2024. Data were obtained from the Northern Territory Notifiable Disease System. Of the 26 cases identified, most were men (81%), non-Indigenous (88%) and with infection
