A new fuzzy regression algorithm was successfully applied to calibration in thin-layer chromatography (TLC)/densitometry. Different regression techniques were also considered, and objective quality coefficients were used for evaluation of the results. Depending on the structure of the data, the fuzzy procedure can improve the results dramatically. From the results reported in this paper and other unpublished results, it appears clear that the calibration procedure based on fuzzy regression is the most suitable regression method in quantitative TLC.

BACKGROUND: Familial persistent microhematuria with normal renal function is the most common presentation of thin basement membrane nephropathy (TBMN). Gross hematuria episodes and loin pain attacks are other manifestations of the disease. Based on clinical experience, the minimum required alveolar ridge width must be of 5-6 mm in patient evaluation for the placement of endosseous dental implants. In comparison with other techniques, the use of autogenous mandibular chin grafts to enlarge thin alveolar ridges seems to be very efficient with a success rate of 88.57%. Advantages are: only one surgical field; minimal resorption after grafting; good predictability; minimum postoperative complications. The surgical technique is described step by step and a longitudinal study in 35 patients shows the high predictability of the method.

We described four patients in two families of unique familial spastic paraplegia (FSP) which was thought to be possibly autosomal recessive inheritance. We reviewed the computed tomography (CT) appearances, plain film radiographs and clinical findings of 17 patients who suffered fractures of the naso-ethmoidal complex. Six patients (35%) with diplopia were noted on CT to have lateral displacement of medial orbital wall fragments into the orbit (medial wall 'blow-in' fractures) leading to displacement of the globe or extra-ocular muscles. An analysis of 1,454 percutaneous thin needle biopsies (PTNB) performed in 1,061 patients in the years 1976-1987 disclosed the sensitivity for the detection of malignancy 93.7%, specificity 95.8%, and accuracy 93.9%. Thin-needle aspiration lung biopsy has become an important diagnostic technique in chest disease. Complications, other than pneumothorax, are infrequent. We report a case of acute cardiac tamponade complicating biopsy of a lesion near the mediastinum. Caution should be exercised in selecting patients for, and in performing biopsies in, or close to the mediastinum.

We describe an indirect test of fetal lung maturity: the quantitation of disaturated phosphatidylcholine in amniotic fluid. The lipids in samples of amniotic fluid from 172 patients were reacted with osmium tetroxide, and disaturated phosphatidylcholine was then isolated by thin-layer chromatography. A procedure for separating barbiturates by reverse-phase TLC is described. A spotted TLC plate is dipped in mineral oil/petroleum ether (1:10) and run 15 cm in a solvent of water/methanol/ammonium hydroxide, (80:20:2). After visualization, the drugs tested showed distinct separation.

The results of 49 transabdominal and translumbar thin needle percutaneous aspiration biopsies in patients suspected of having malignant disease are reported. A correct diagnosis was obtained in 40 cases. Placement of the Chiba needle was accomplished by fluoroscopically controlled biplane radiography during constrast examinations. A commodity extract containing presumptive aflatoxin M1 is placed on an origin spot of a thin layer chromatographic plate and overspotted with trifluoroacetic acid. The mixture is held in the dark 30 min at ambient temperature and then 30 min at 55 degrees C. The plate is developed with CHCL3-acetone-2-propanol (85+10+7). The Rf values of reacted and unreacted aflatoxin M1 are compared with authentic M1 similarly treated for identification. The lowest concentration that has been identified is 0.1 mug/kg.
