Tension hydrothorax, though rare, is a life-threatening complication of malignant pleural effusion (MPE). Early recognition and intervention … sistent with tension hydrothorax from MPE. Management included immediate pleural drainage with tube thoracostomy, which led to symptomatic relief, and the diagnosis of MPE was later confirmed through pleural biopsy. Traumatic PTX is a common pathology identified in the emergency department. BACKGROUND: Tension pneumothorax (tPTX) remains a significant cause of potentially preventable death in military and civilian settings. The current prehospital standard of care for tPTX is immediate decompression with a 14-gauge 8-cm angiocatheter; however, failure rates may be as high as 17% to 60%. Spontaneous pneumothorax (SP) is now commonly treated with thoracoscopic surgery, which is associated with less pain and a shorter hospital stay than thoracotomy; however, in its initial stages, thoracoscopic stapled bullectomy resulted in an unexpectedly high incidence of postoperative SP recurrence.
