Although ticks are known vectors of pathogens across a range of hosts, there is limited research on emerging tick-borne diseases of horses i … Ehrlichia spp. and Anaplasma spp. using a commercial enzyme-linked immunoassay. Of the horses with tick infestations, 71.4% hosted at least one tick with a rickettsial agent detected. Rickettsia spp. were identified in 25.9% (91/352) of the ticks tested with R. amblyommatis (80.2%; 73/91) most often detected. Ehrlichia spp. were identified in 2.8% (10/352) of the …

Hosts are typically co-parasitized by multiple species. Parasites can benefit or suffer from the presence of other parasites, which can redu … density dependent effects on the tick's feeding success. More diseased hosts suffered more from the tick infestations, as shown by reduced haematocrits. Three Mycoplasma-infected birds died during the weeks following the experiment, although all birds were kept in optimal housing conditions. Mycoplasma made the bird a less accessible and valuable host for ticks, wh …

Captive-raised eastern wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) poults were allowed to forage on either recently burned plots or on plots that had not been burned during the previous 3 years. Following a two hour exposure on the study plots, external parasites were recovered from all poults. The louse (Menacanthus stramineus) and the lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum) were the only parasites recovered. Fifty-nine poults exposed to the burned plots had a significantly (P less than 0.001) lower prevalence of A. americanum infestation than did 57 poults exposed to the unbured plots. Thirty

Using macrophage scavenger receptor-A knockout (SRKO) mice, we examined the role of macrophage class A scavenger receptors (MRS-A) on the immune response and acquisition of host resistance against repeated infestation with Haemaphysalis longicornis. Except for one batch of nymphs that infested one of the SRKO (SR-/-) mice and showed no appreciable reduction in body weight, all the other groups of nymphs manifested significant decrease in body weight. Both SR-/- and wild type (SR+/+) mice showed a sustained increase in anti-tick antibody titers, but SR+/+ mice showed significantly higher titers

A quantitative PCR, based on the gene encoding Babesia ovis Surface Protein D (BoSPD) was developed and applied to investigate the presence of Babesia ovis (B. ovis) in its principal vector, the tick Rhipicephalus bursa (R. bursa), and in the ovine host. Quantification of B. ovis in experimentally-infected lambs showed a sharp increase in parasitemia 10-11 days in blood-inoculated and adult tick-infested lambs, and 24 days in a larvae-infested lamb. A gradual decrease of parasitemia was observed in the following months, with parasites detectable 6-12 months post-infection. Examination of the p

Lyme borreliosis is one of the zoonotic and vectorial diseases in the world. Female of Taiga tick, Ixodes persulcatus play an important role being the main vector of the agents, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, of the disease in the Far East including Japan. The number of patients who contacted Lyme borreliosis have been estimated to be around 100 cases in all of Japan. We also detected the spirochetes from the skin tissues of 27 cases involving erythema and 3 cases without erythema after tick bites in Hokkaido. We noticed that in those cases when the victims removed ticks by themselves using

Prior exposure of vertebrate hosts to tick salivary proteins can induce specific immunity to tick infestation, as well as affording protection against tick-transmitted Borrelia burgdorferi infection in the mammalian host. Vaccination using an adenovirus expression system to deliver 4 tick salivary proteins (Ad-Salps) derived from Ixodes scapularis, Salp15, Salp25A, Salp25D, and Isac, was explored. Results indicate that vaccination with tick salivary proteins in an adenoviral vector can be used to modulate a Th1 response in the host and partially control spirochete load in immunized mice after

The efficacy of amitraz on cattle ticks was assessed by susceptibility tests, spraying and dipping trials. Tests on the susceptibility of three tick species, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, Amblyomma variegatum and Boophilus decoloratus to amitraz (technical grade-purity 98.6% w/w) showed all 15 tick strains tested to be highly susceptible, with LC50 ranging between 0.001% and 0.03%, and LC99, between 0.01% and 0.07%. Spraying trials were carried out on calves infested with R. appendiculatus, A. variegatum and B. decoloratus. Amitraz wettable powder [as Taktic total replacement (TR)] was tested

BACKGROUND: Ticks are obligate hematophagous arthropods that synthesize the glycan Galα1-3Galβ1-(3)4GlcNAc-R (α-Gal) associated with the alp … n the saliva with potential implications in AGS and other disorders and protective capacity against tick infestations and pathogen infection. Future research should focus on the characterization of the function of tick glycoproteins with α-Gal in tick biology and AGS.

BACKGROUND: Climate warming is altering the seasonal timing of many ecological interactions. Migratory birds typically time their movements using photoperiodic cues, whereas the activity of ectoparasites such as ticks is largely temperature dependent. This difference in environmental drivers may create climate-induced phenological mismatches that reshape host-parasite interactions.
METHODS: We investigated tick infestation in migratory thrushes during late-autumn migration in Belgium, a period historically assumed to fall largely outside the main activity season of Ixodes ricinus. In addition

International tourism to tropical and sub-tropical areas, both to resource-poor and developed countries, has almost trebled within the past 20 years. We examined the records of patients referred to the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine over 6 years. 46 (63%) of infestations originated in the UK. Ticks were most common in the UK (19 cases, 41%) whereas myiasis was most common in travellers (18 cases, 67%). These records suggest that whereas many overseas acquired infestations are potentially dangerous if infections are transmitted, ticks constitute the greatest risk, and both domestic and e

Hyalomma anatolicum anatolicum and Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus are the most economically important tick species in India and other tropical and subtropical regions of the world and transmit pathogens causing animal and human diseases. We demonstrated that vaccination of animal by rHaa86 could be used for the control of both H. a. anatolicum and R. (B.) microplus infestations. By comparing the efficacy of rHaa86 and rBm86, it was observed that vaccine based on rHaa86 will be more effective in controlling homologous challenge infestations (68·7% against larvae and 45·8% against adults).

Knowledge of Haemaphysalis ticks infesting domestic and wild animals remains scarce in northern Kerala, India. A systematic study was undertaken to identify and characterize Haemaphysalis tick species infesting domestic and wild animals in northern Kerala, India. They were further characterized using mitochondrial 16S rRNA, nuclear 18S rRNA and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (MT-COI) genes and the phylogenetic analysis was performed using the generated sequences. In this study, H. bispinosa, H. spinigera, H. turturis, H. minuta, and H. sambar were recovered from wild animals, and

Individual calves, exposed to infestation for 14 d on dry-land Kikuyu grass pastures on the coast near Alexandria, were slaughtered at approximately monthly intervals over a period of 2 years and examined for ticks. Although seven species were recovered total tick burdens were for the most part low. Changing the acaricide with which other cattle on the farm, but not the survey calves, were treated from an organophosphate-based compound to a synthetic pyrethroid resulted in a marked sustained reduction in the number of ticks on the calves. Successive pairs of yearling cattle exposed to infestat

Rhipicephalus microplus is a blood-sucking parasite that causes heavy infestations on cattle and is a vector for severe tick-borne diseases, such as anaplasmosis and babesiosis, and poses a significant threat to the cattle industry. Cattle ticks show increasing acaricide resistance, which creates an additional problem concerning the inefficient chemical control of tick populations in cattle-grazing areas, necessitating the exploration of alternative tick biocontrol methods. Our study aimed to demonstrate the acaropathogenic efficacy of two bacterial species during experimental infections on R.

The objective of this study was to assess whether the distribution of Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease, and its vector tick Ixodes scapularis Say (Acari: Ixodidae) across Indiana is influenced by large-scale landscape features, specifically the proportion of forest within the surrounding landscape and the distance to water features such as lakes and major streams. Hunter-killed deer were checked for ticks in designated check-stations in the opening firearm hunting season between 2005 and 2007. Hunting locations for approximately 3,600 deer were used in ArcGIS (ESRI, Re

Karoo paralysis in South Africa is induced in livestock by feeding female Ixodes rubicundus ticks when infestation densities on hosts exceed certain critical levels. It has been shown previously that Angora goats are at a higher risk of being paralysed than Merino sheep, and such differences have been related to differences in feeding behaviour and spatial distribution of the two small-stock breeds. We hypothesized that differences in infestation densities with Karoo paralysis ticks would also occur between Merino and Dorper sheep breeds. A study was conducted under natural conditions in the s
