Optical coherence tomography for imaging of skin and skin diseases.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an emerging imaging technology based on light reflection. It provides real-time images with up to 2-mm penetration into the skin and a resolution of approximately 10 microm. It is routinely used in ophthalmology. The normal skin and its appendages have been studied, as have many diseases. The method can provide accurate measures of epidermal and nail changes in normal tissue. Skin cancer and other tumors, as well as inflammatory diseases, have been studied and good agreement found between OCT images and histopathological architecture. OCT also allows nonin

Lens thickness with age and accommodation by optical coherence tomography.

PURPOSE: To utilize time-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) to measure changes in the crystalline lens with age and accommodation. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of pre-presbyopic and presbyopic subjects was conducted. Amplitude of accommodation was measured with the push-up test. Objective accommodation was measured with the Grand Seiko auto-refractor and a Badal lens system. Lens thickness was measured with the Zeiss Visante OCT and an internal optometer. The data were analysed using correlation coefficients, linear regression, and by calculating the average change in lens thicknes

Optical coherence tomography characteristics of epiretinal membranes in neurofibromatosis 2.

Neurofibromatosis 2 is a neurocutaneous disorder that demonstrates unique ophthalmic manifestations. Several authors have noted a higher than expected incidence of epiretinal membranes in this population. In this brief case series, the authors document a series of optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans performed on three patients with neurofibromatosis 2 that demonstrated epiretinal membranes with atypical and distinctive characteristics. The membranes were unusually thick, with rolled edges extending into the vitreoretinal interface. The appearance of these membranes was distinct enough to

A clinical and optical coherence tomography study of choroidal colobomas.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This paper reviews current understanding of coloboma of the choroid, as evaluated clinically and using optical coherence tomography. RECENT FINDINGS: Studies of the margin of coloboma of the choroid with optical coherence tomography revealed several interesting features, including variability in transition from normal retina to intercalary membrane (gradual or abrupt), presence of subclinical retinal detachments, focal communications between the subretinal space and subintercalary membrane space in eyes with extra-colobomatous retinal detachments, and inward humping of the

Intraductal optical coherence tomography for investigating main pancreatic duct strictures.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) permits high-resolution imaging of tissue microstructures using a probe that can be inserted into the main pancreatic duct (MPD) through a standard endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) catheter. This prospective study was designed to assess the diagnostic capacity of OCT to differentiate between nonneoplastic and neoplastic lesions in patients with MPD segmental strictures. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twelve consecutive patients with documented MPD segmental stricture were investigated by endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS)

Visualization of vitreomacular tractions with en face optical coherence tomography.

BACKGROUND: In vitreomacular traction syndrome, an incomplete vitreous detachment with persistent vitreous traction on the macula is present. This condition may determine formation of epiretinal membranes, macular puckering, macular oedema, and traction macular detachment. Recently introduced en face optical coherence tomography (OCT) provides not only longitudinal B-scan but also coronal C-scan images of the retina. METHODS: Fifteen eyes of 11 non-diabetic patients presenting vitreomacular traction syndrome have been evaluated with en face OCT (OTI, Toronto, Ontario, Canada). RESULTS: In 12

Imaging scleral expansion bands for presbyopia with optical coherence tomography.

A 57-year-old woman was treated for mild presbyopia with implantation of scleral expansion bands (SEB). Although near vision was temporarily restored, the effect dissipated after 1 year. Slitlamp-adapted optical coherence tomography (OCT) at 1310 nm allowed precise cross-sectional visualization of the hyporeflective intrascleral segments. The OCT method provided precise images of the segment depth and thickness, the scleral thickness at the scleral spur, the anterior chamber angle, and the angle-opening distance. Intrascleral tilting of 1 segment was seen; this required removal of the SEB beca

Foveal hypoplasia in oculocutaneous albinism demonstrated by optical coherence tomography.

PURPOSE: To document, in vivo, the foveal morphology and thickness in a patient with oculocutaneous albinism. METHODS: Observational case report. In a 10-year-old female with oculocutaneous albinism, multiple cross-sectional scans of the fovea were performed using optical coherence tomography. RESULTS: Optical coherence tomography scans were unable to detect the foveal pit. A widespread thickening of the retina occurred throughout the entire fovea with no difference from the surrounding macula. The foveal thickness was greater than 300 microm in the eyes of this patient with oculocutaneous a

Enhanced gastrointestinal diagnosis: light-scattering spectroscopy and optical coherence tomography.

Detection of microscopic and biochemical changes within the mucosa and submucosa are beyond the realm of routine endoscopy. Distinguishing hyperplastic from neoplastic polyps, differentiating malignant from benign ulcers, and detecting mucosal dysplasia in patients with ulcerative colitis or Barrett's esophagus remain within the purview of the gastrointestinal pathologist. Recent developments in tissue spectroscopy and endoscopic optical coherence tomography have the potential to expand significantly our ability to diagnose gastrointestinal disease beyond the capabilities of visible light endo

High-resolution imaging of gynecologic neoplasms using optical coherence tomography.

BACKGROUND: A modality capable of imaging the female reproductive tract, at or near the cellular level, could lead to the detection of diseases at earlier stages than currently possible. Optical coherence tomography achieves high resolutions in the cellular range (4-20 microm) and could accomplish that level of detection. METHOD: Optical coherence tomography imaging of gynecologic tissue was studied in vitro on normal and neoplastic human cervical and uterine tissue. EXPERIENCE: The structures of the normal ectocervix and endocervix, including epithelium, basal membrane, and glands, were ide
