OBJECTIVE: To determine whether elderly patients manifest poorer survivals for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.
METHODS: Cases of squamous cell carcinoma of the glottic larynx, oral tongue, and tonsil were extracted from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results database for 1988 to 1998. For each primary site, patients were segregated into two age groups: 50 to 69 years of age and 70 years of age and older. Malignant lymphomas account for 3% of all malignant disease in the head and neck area. Tonsillar metastasis from lung cancer is an extremely rare event and is usually related to metastatic spread of the neoplastic disease to other organs with poor prognosis. Granulocytic sarcoma or chloroma is defined as an extramedullary solid tumor, composed of granulocytic precursor cells at various levels of differentiation. Granulocytic sarcoma is mostly associated with acute and chronic leukemia, rarely with polycythemia vera and myelofibrosis. The use of special immuno-histochemical stains is mandatory, because this tumor is often misdiagnosed as malignant lymphoma. We report two cases of granulocytic sarcoma (tonsil and ovary) associated with chronic myelogenous leukemia. We describe the first reported association of atypical CML and granulocytic sarcoma.

A rare case of metastatic lung cancer from the tonsil associated with ectopic ACTH, beta-LPH and beta-endorphin production was presented. A year ater the tonsillectomy and lymphadenectomy, the patient had metastatic lung cancer. Three years later he died. Brown pigmentation remained evident for a month before his death. Both ACTH and cortisol levels were high in the plasma. ACTH, beta-LPH and beta-endorphin were found in the tissue extracts (squamous cell carcinoma).
